Drop test simulation: how to set up a virtual drop test in 8 steps
A drop test simulation shows which corner or snap-fit of a product will fail on impact while the design is still in CAD. Physical drop tests usually run on the first molded parts, so a failure at that point means a tool change and another round of testing. Simulating the same drop beforehand lets you fix the weak point with a fillet or a thicker wall, and send a design to the lab that you already expect to pass.

Extreme amnesia cases, AI, and our imagined futures: in conversation with a Harvard memory researcher
We tend to think of human memory as if it's one of those old steel filing cabinets: some information gets stashed inside, and when the time comes, we hope we can find it by flipping through the tabs on a few billion neuron-supported manila folders. But the truth, as science has learned—and continues to learn—is that memory is more than just the attic of our minds. We’re realizing that it’s a foundational part of how we interpret and imagine our futures.

Button and Barrichello coming in 1-2 in the 2009 Australian GP そして先日、今年5月に行なわれるF1マイアミGPでその伝説的シーズンのマシンで、ジェンソン・バトンが所有していたブラウンGP 001がオークションにかけられることが発表された。...
Jenson Button’s 2009 Brawn GP car is going up for auction
This May, in Miami, the auction house Bonhams will put up for bid Jenson Button’s Brawn GP car from the 2009 season. The car comes with an asterisk: it's not actually the one Button drove to the F1 world driver's championship — it’s the one he was given under legal duress.
This new magazine feels like the F1 museum of your dreams
You've no doubt come across RACEWKND, the art-book-slash-magazine where each issue carries a satisfying heft and a specific theme: say, the Miami GP's inaugural race or F1 in the 1970's. Now, the team behind those all-too-periodic periodicals is back with something new and, thankfully, more regular: a quarterly magazine called RQ1.
The story of the "Goodbye Daniel Ricciardo" books at F1's U.S. GP
In the fan zone at the Circuit of the Americas, next to a jar of earplugs and a few feet from an industrial sized jug of free sunscreen, sat a 3-inch thick book with heavy blank white pages. Fans were shuffling from the midday heat into the tent where the book sat, writing notes in Sharpie to Daniel Ricciardo, the man whose absence hung over the race weekend like a loved one lost. “You were my first F1 favorite driver,” read one note in the book. “R.I.R. (Rest in Retirement),” another.

Pirelli explains why its Austin GP trophies were missing
At the end of the U.S. GP in Austin, winner Charles LeClerc, runner-up Carlos Sainz, and third-place finisher Max Verstappen all stood on the podium — but something was missing. Three things, in fact. None of the podium finishers of the U.S. Grand Prix were awarded the much-hyped trophies from Pirelli that were shown off in the days before the race.
AJ Allmendinger blasts away the nerves with heavy metal
AJ Allmendinger is just like the rest of us: he’s trying his best to stay hydrated and not be too hard on himself. But it’s not easy. Allmendinger is, as he admits, in the late stages of his career. He’s 42 years old, with 17 years and 400-plus NASCAR races under his belt (plus time in Champ Car, IndyCar, IMSA, and WEC). He’s had highs (including 20 NASCAR wins) and lows. And through it all, one thing’s remained consistent—and relatable: self-imposed pressure.

Q&A: Newgarden explains the laps that decided the 2024 Indy 500
“It's been 48 hours and I'm tired,” says Josef Newgarden when we ask how he's been since winning the 2024 edition of the Indianapolis 500. We’re in a 38th-floor hotel conference room looking out onto the Empire State Building, the sun is shining, and he’s on day one of a whirlwind NYC media tour. “I don't want to say [there’s a] downside to winning the Indy 500. The Gap Khakis That'll Help You Escape the Grip of Optimized Chinos Original
You know the pants. You’ll be swiping through your friends’ Instagram stories when you’re suddenly watching a headless dude yank aggressively at the crotchal region of his chinos, the fabric stretching like Katherine Helmond’s face in Brazil. Three taps later, another version of that guy appears for a different chinos brand, cockily monologuing about how well his pants handle his athletic ass, right before he—surprise!—drops into a set of barbell squats while wearing the chinos.

Joule Heating Simulation for Power Electronics
What is Joule Heating? Joule heating is an important phenomenon to capture in the design of many power electronics products and components. It is the physical effect of current passing through an electrical conductor and converting to thermal energy, causing heating. Increasing temperatures in the conductor material can impact the overall efficiency of the components or even be harnessed.

No ‘Plan B’ yet for Aston Martin if Vettel retires
Mike Krack does not think Sebastian Vettel is messing Aston Martin about regarding his future – and admitted the team have no “Plan B”in place just yet. Vettel is thought to be deliberating whether to bring a close at the end of this season to a Formula 1 career that began in 2007 and yielded four consecutive World Championships from 2010-13, with 53 victories in total.

Russell urges race director changes after heated meeting
George Russell has called for a return to a single race director system in F1 following a heated drivers’ briefing in Austria on Friday. Following the huge controversy at the end of the 2021 season regarding decisions made by Michael Masi, the permanent race director who was subsequently ousted, two men were brought in to share his role.
Zhou explains glitch that caused aborted sprint start
Zhou Guanyu has given his take on the engine glitch in his car that caused an aborted start for the Austrian Grand Prix sprint. The Chinese driver had been about to launch his Alfa Romeo in racing conditions for the first time since his horrifying crash six days earlier going into the opening corner of the British GP.
Perez criticises consistency of Austrian GP stewards
Sergio Perez hit out at the consistency of the Austrian Grand Prix stewards having received a grid penalty for the sprint – and then made a terrific recovery that almost nullified it. The Red Bull driver initially qualified fourth for the second sprint qualifying event of the season, but had a potential punishment hanging over him.
Brundle: Leclerc has ‘had enough’ of Ferrari misfortune
Martin Brundle thinks Charles Leclerc is struggling to cope with the misfortune he has endured at Ferrari over the past five races. After a brilliant start to the season, winning two of the first three grands prix and finishing second in the other, little has gone right for Leclerc on Sundays. He was forced to retire while leading in Spain and Azerbaijan due to engine failures, while in Monaco and Britain botched strategies from the team meant potential victories turned into fourth-place finishes.
Floor damage ‘compromised’ Alonso’s qualy potential
Fernando Alonso revealed a broken floor had cost him a significantly better result than eighth in Australian Grand Prix qualifying. The Spaniard was disappointed to find himself starting the sprint on the fourth row, even after Sergio Perez had been dropped nine positions from P4 to P13 for track limits violations following a post-session investigation by the stewards.
Russell ‘concerned’ about car’s condition after crash
George Russell admitted he is having “a tricky couple of races” after crashing out of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver found himself having to walk back into the pits without his car for the second time in six days, his route there landing him a warning from the stewards.
Ricciardo struggling to pinpoint reason for Q1 exit
Daniel Ricciardo could offer no straightforward explanation for his latest qualifying disappointment at the Austrian Grand Prix. Friday was frustrating for McLaren as a whole, with their two cars set to fill the eighth row of the grid for the season’s second sprint, the venue being the Red Bull Ring.
Norris explains brake problems after ‘frustrating’ qualy
Lando Norris has described the braking issues that plagued him during a disappointing Austrian Grand Prix qualifying session in which he finished 15th. The McLaren driver found himself going off track at various points and admitted over the team radio he had completely lost confidence in his car’s brakes. It was not the only problem the Briton had endured because his MCL36 also required a power-unit change, needing to revert back to an older engine.
Wolff reacts to huge cheers as Hamilton crashed out
Toto Wolff thinks Formula 1 fans need to be educated after Lewis Hamilton was cheered when crashing out of Austrian Grand Prix qualifying. Looking like he could challenge for pole position for the season’s second sprint, Hamilton found his Mercedes making a heavy side-on impact with the barrier as he tried to complete a first flying lap of Q3.
Perez admits he ‘got lucky’ with Safety Car timing
Sergio Perez has admitted he “got lucky” with the Safety Car that propelled him back into podium contention at the British Grand Prix. The Mexican’s top-three chances looked all but over when he was forced into the pits on lap six for a new front wing, having suffered damage during contact with Charles Leclerc as the Ferrari squeezed through on the inside.
Marko ‘simpler than people think’ in driver dealings
Red Bull junior driver Juri Vips has poured cold water on notions that Helmut Marko is any sort of Machiavellian figure in his guise as driver development boss. Marko has a reputation for being a difficult person to please, both as the unofficial head of Red Bull’s motorsport operations and the main man in their driver academy.
McLaren urge penalty review after ‘crazy’ Norris scenario
McLaren want a review of F1’s penalty points system over fears Lando Norris could have faced a ban despite, they feel, no evidence he had driven “dangerously”. A total of 12 penalty points clocked up by a driver on his FIA super-licence during a 12-month period will mean a one-race suspension, although that punishment has yet to be handed down since the system was introduced in 2014. It could happen in 2022, however, as certain drivers are not too far from the threshold.
Marko tips Sainz as a potential title contender
Helmut Marko has followed up his recent praise of Carlos Sainz, in relation to his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc, by tipping him as a title contender. The Red Bull driver academy boss is very familiar with Sainz’s work because the Spaniard was a member of the programme he runs between 2010 and 2017. Toro Rosso gave Sainz his Formula 1 debut in 2015 at the same time as Max Verstappen.

© PA Images Alex Albon with hand on head planetF1 Alex Albon has described an embarrassing incident during his first working day at Williams – which fortunately ended favourably. The London-born Thai driver is starting to settle into life as a Williams driver, back on the Formula 1 grid after a year’s absence having been dropped by Red Bull in favour of Sergio Perez.
FIA expect ‘more cars in the mix’ as 2022 evolves
Nikolas Tombazis believes Formula 1’s new regulations have the potential to put “more cars in the mix” for race wins and possibly even championships. The FIA’s head of single-seater technical matters recently said he hopes that by the end of 2022 the gap between the front of the field to the back over a single lap, which was three seconds last season, will have been slashed in half. That, of course, gives hope to the backmarkers who in 2021 were Haas, Williams and Alfa Romeo.
Vettel: Fighting Alonso again was ‘special’
Sebastian Vettel did find some enjoyment from a difficult 2021 season – and fighting his old rival Fernando Alonso was right up there. Two of the old stagers of the Formula 1 grid resumed battle after Alonso returned from two years away to drive for Alpine. He was an archetypal midfield performer and the same was true of Vettel, the duo frequently finding themselves right in the centre of the pack where the initial target for a grand prix weekend was to reach the top-10 shootout in qualifying.
Honda hit title target in their set timeframe
Honda chief Masashi Yamamoto has revealed the company hit the target for World Championship success they had set themselves when joining forces with Red Bull. Max Verstappen’s triumph in an enthralling 2021 Drivers’ title battle with Lewis Hamilton meant Honda departed Formula 1 with another crown – their first since 1991.
Masi ‘buckled under pressure’ from Wolff, Horner
Martin Brundle and Damon Hill both think Toto Wolff and Christian Horner put undue pressure on Michael Masi in the closing stages of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Mercedes and Red Bull team principals used their direct radio facility to the race director to plead their case for decisions that would aid their drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen respectively, during the World Championship climax.
