Planetary-scale metagenomic analysis reveals CRISPR targeting dynamics across ecosystems
Abstract Interactions between microorganisms and their mobile genetic elements (MGEs), including viruses and plasmids, impact microbiome dynamics. CRISPR–Cas systems are important regulators of these host–MGE interactions, but a global understanding of the diversity, activity and roles of CRISPR spacers across Earth’s biomes is still lacking.
Optimized Plaque Assay for Detecting Chronically Infecting Viruses of Haloarchaea
Abstract Archaeal viruses predominantly exhibit a chronic lifestyle, where viral particles are released without causing host cell death. Therefore, conventional plaque assays, which are well-suited for identifying lytic viruses, usually fail to detect chronically infecting viruses due to their non-lytic nature. To address this limitation, we developed an optimized plaque assay protocol for detecting chronically infecting viruses of haloarchaea, particularly species within the Haloferax genus.

Tissue-Specific Microbiomes of the Red Sea Giant Clam Tridacna maxima Highlight Differential Abundance of Endozoicomonadaceae
Introduction Tropical coral reefs are among the most productive ecosystems and provide important habitats for a diversity of organisms, including giant clams of the Tridacninae subfamily in the Indo-Pacific.
Archaea in and on the Human Body: Health Implications and Future Directions
Archaea in the Human Gut The human large intestine (colon), in healthy individuals, has extremely low oxygen concentrations, and over 90% of its microbiota are strict anaerobes. Researchers taking metagenomic fecal microbiota surveys of adult Europeans could assign about 0.8% of the genes in their dataset to archaea [9], and similar numbers (0.2%–0.3%) were reported for Amerindians and Malwaians [10], while North Americans had much lower fractions (<0.05%).
