Just how much have street takeovers spun out of control in LA?
Dillon was just 12 years old when his uncle took him to his first street takeover. “It was like the first time going to an amusement park,” he said. Pure exhilaration. Cars spinning. Smoke in the air. “People literally do not care.” If you live in Southern California and you’ve never heard of a street takeover, you’ve probably heard one: Engines rev, tires screech and fireworks explode. These illegal gatherings happen frequently on weekend nights throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties.
The Health Divide: The devastating toll of wildfires on health is far greater than we think
September 15, 2025 – Everyone thought drugs killed 25-year-old Preston Weinberg. He died alone, crouched in the shower of his Los Angeles apartment, sometime between Jan. 9 and Jan. 11 of this year. No water was running. Police found small quantities of MDMA and cocaine in his home. Outside, smoke choked the air as two catastrophic wildfires tore through distant neighborhoods of the county. His parents, who live in Pennsylvania, got the heart-shattering call.

Has Unbundling Lost Its Cool?
Is unbundling the future? So it would seem. Open banking, set in motion globally by a regulatory fiat called PSD2, gives licensed third parties access to banking infrastructure so that they can make their services available to existing bank customers. The intent of the regulation is to level the playing field for innovators by offering consumers an expanded number of point solutions that are different than what’s offered now by their existing bank.
When it Comes to Inclusion, Are Film Reviewers Rotten or Fresh?
The report, titled "Critic's Choice?" is the first from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative to investigate inclusion among film reviewers, and examines access and opportunity for film critics. The report uses reviews of the 100 top grossing films of 2017 posted on the site Rotten Tomatoes to assess gender and race/ethnicity of critics, finding that reviewers are overwhelmingly white and male.
Teens and parents in Japan and US agree - mobile devices are a distraction
Teens and parents in Japan and US agree – mobile devices are a distraction As a university professor and a mother of teen boys, I am immersed in a world of young faces buried in their phones. To be fair, adults, too, are enamored with the tiny, powerful computing devices in the palms of their hands. The patterns of daily life have been forever altered by the ubiquity of digital devices. The world has been rewired. And nobody wrote a user’s manual.
Database project reveals L.A.’s most hazardous time to drive, and more
The most comprehensive database ever assembled on Los Angeles traffic is now accessible to drivers, journalists and policymakers via a user-friendly platform built at USC. Thanks to a data-driven journalism collaboration between the USC Annenberg School of Journalism and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC), the “Crosstown Traffic” project provides fresh insights on congestion, road accidents and public transport from 2012-16.

Hollywood is still 'a straight, white boys club,' study finds
A new study finds Hollywood's diversity problem runs much deeper than minority representation at its premier awards show. Researchers at the University of Southern California say the entire media landscape "is still largely whitewashed" and that women and minorities are caught in an "epidemic of invisibility" running throughout popular stories, whether on film, TV or digital platforms.
