1 Introduction Brucellosis is a global zoonotic disease caused by gram-negative, intracellular bacteria of the genus Brucella (1). The disease also severely affects animal reproduction, resulting in huge economic losses for the livestock industries of developing countries (2). Macrophages are among the most important cells involved in pathogen recognition and clearance in the innate immune response and are also the main host cells of B. abortus (3).
