Miller: Keeping good workers takes more than a generous paycheck

New Jersey Star-Ledger — According to a just-released survey by leadership development and consulting firm OI Partners, with the improving job market, half of the companies surveyed reported higher turnover than last year and three-quarters are bracing for still more employees to leave. Heightening that concern, 58 percent of the companies surveyed have added, or plan to add, workers, while only 8 percent expect to reduce staff. Retaining talent was selected as the top human resource challenge this year by 70 percent of survey respondents. Customer service employees were the most difficult to retain, according to the survey, followed by operations and production workers, sales and marketing, information services, accounting and finance, research and development and human resources employees.

Years Inside Intel Could Be New CEO's Biggest Handicap

Years Inside Intel Could Be New CEO's Biggest Handicap

www.ecommercetimes.com — Brian Krzanich's intimate involvement with Intel for more than three decades could make it difficult for him to make the sharp turns necessary as mobile takes over and the PC is left behind. That said, if the new CEO attracts some luminaries from outside, the combination of lengthy, loyal service and fresh ideas could set Intel on the right track. Intel announced Thursday that COO Brian Krzanich will take the helm on May 16, replacing current CEO Paul Otellini, who will retire this month after 38 years with the company, eight of them as its chief. Krzanich has his own long history at Intel.

Michael Dell May Get What He Asked For

www.ecommercetimes.com — After reviewing several options, Dell's board of directors decided that the plan its CEO originally proposed for taking the company private was better than any competing offer and advised shareholders to give it the nod. If Michael Dell's deal finally goes through, that may be the easy part. Next he'll have to figure out how to adapt his company to a world where PCs are rapidly losing importance. Michael Dell's attempt to take his company private in a US$24.4 billion deal has moved forward another inch or so in what is turning out to be a very long road for the CEO.

No Love From Dell for Icahn's Latest Proposal

www.ecommercetimes.com — You can't blame a guy for trying, as they say, and billionaire investor Carl Icahn just keeps coming back for more. Unfortunately, his plan 'lacks credibility,' a special committee of Dell's board of directors just concluded -- not to mention some $2.9 billion in potential funding. The result? It would leave Dell in a "weak financial position," the group said. Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has been nothing if not persistent in his efforts to keep Michael Dell from rebuilding his computer business as a private company, but on Monday Icahn's stock repurchase proposal got the thumbs-down again.

Birch Buys Bebo Back for Just a Million Bucks

Birch Buys Bebo Back for Just a Million Bucks

www.ecommercetimes.com — It's been a long road for Bebo, which got sold to AOL back in 2008 for a whopping $850 million. Its market value dropped precipitously after that, and this week founder Michael Birch bought the social network back for a drastically reduced price. "We just bought Bebo back for $1m," Birch wrote in a tweet on Monday. "Can we actually re-invent it? Who knows, but it will be fun trying..." Remember Bebo? In its heyday, five or six years ago, the social networking site showed enough promise to be considered a possible rival to then-dominant MySpace -- and to pull in an US$850 million purchase price when it was acquired by AOL.

Reorgs are futile: don't waste your time

Reorgs are futile: don't waste your time

valwrightconsulting.com — After last weeks highly anticipated reorganization, the reality will have begun to sink in for many Microsoft employees this week. "Who has power?, can I make this decision?, do I like my new boss?, do I want to stay here in the short or long term?"; are many of the questions employees will be asking. Steve Ballmer made a critical mistake last week, he failed to announce compensation changes that reinforce the collaboration he is seeking from his new strategy. Read what I told Fast Company . I am not a fan of reorganizations, because the design and execution is often flawed.

New "Nimble, Collaborative, Decisive" Microsoft So Far None Of Those Things

Fast Company — When all but the most productive among us were still hitting the snooze button at 6 a.m. this morning, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sent out an email to his entire staff. In some 2,720 words, Ballmer detailed his vision for "a far-reaching realignment of the company." The shake-up is aimed at pulling Microsoft's 90,000 employees together into fewer divisions to make the software behemoth behave more like a nimble startup--and maybe even innovate. In a section subheaded "Communicative," Ballmer wrote: "In the new, rapid-turn world, we need to communicate in ways that don't just exchange information but drive agility, action, ownership and accountability."

money.usnews.com — That sick, sinking feeling you have when you have to get up and go to work means that something is wrong. Unfortunately, you're far from alone if you experience a case of the heebie-jeebies every time your weekday alarm clock goes off. A 2012 study by Right Management showed that almost two-thirds of respondents from the United States and Canada expressed being unhappy at work. A wider-range 2011 study by Mercer of 30,000 workers worldwide found that close to 60 percent of workers wanted out of their current positions. Even in the best-case scenario - such as the 2012 Conference Board report that found a slight uptick in satisfaction of U.S.
