Multi-proxy evidence for woodland clearance in northeast Northumberland (England) during the Iron Age - Vegetation History and Archaeobotany
Abstract Pollen diagrams covering the Bronze Age to Roman period from northeast Northumberland are scarce. We present a 14C-dated pollen record from a peat-filled forest hollow in Chillingham Wild Cattle Park, northeast Northumberland, that spans the Iron Age. For the first time for this part of Northumberland, fungal spores are also analysed to investigate whether clearances took place in the context of crop cultivation or pastoralism.
Corrigendum: Sequential biomolecular, macrofossil, and microfossil extraction from coprolites for reconstructing past behavior and environments
In the published article, there was an error in the legend for Figure 3 as published. The taxonomic name for the image in Figure 3A was displayed as “Asteraceae Atriplex sp.”. The correct taxonomic name for Figure 3A is “Amaranthaceae Atriplex sp.”. The corrected legend appears below: Figure 3. Examples of macroscopic and microscopic plant and animal remains recovered from Paisley Caves coprolites: (A) Amaranthaceae Atriplex sp. seeds, (B) bone fragments, (C) Taeniidae Taenia sp.
Sequential biomolecular, macrofossil, and microfossil extraction from coprolites for reconstructing past behavior and environments
1. Introduction Coprolites (desiccated or mineralized feces) are increasingly recognized as important archives of paleoecological, paleontological, and archeological data (Reinhard and Bryant, 1992; Shillito et al., 2020a; Blong and Shillito, 2021). Coprolites are unique archives in that they represent a short-term record of an individual organism’s diet and environment.
