Enabling artificial placenta cannulation: mechanisms of postnatal umbilical vessel closure and strategies to prolong patency
Abstract Umbilical vessel closure after birth prevents hemorrhage but limits the time window for large-bore umbilical cannulation required for artificial placenta support. This review synthesizes physiologic triggers, vasoactive pathways, and vessel-wall specializations that drive rapid postnatal occlusion and highlights engineering-relevant targets to prolong functional patency.
Distal urethral obstruction in an eight‐week‐old colt with struvite urolithiasis
INTRODUCTION Uroliths are consolidated urinary crystals that form within the urinary tract (Duesterdieck-Zellmer, 2007). Equine uroliths most commonly present in the bladder, and less frequently in the kidney, urethra and ureters, although uroliths can present in multiple locations simultaneously (Laverty et al., 1992).
Lingering Effects: Environmental Exposure Leads to Clonal Hematopoiesis via IL1RAP in 9/11 First Responders
In this issue, Verma, Zeig-Owens, Goldfarb, and colleagues report that increased prevalence of clonal hematopoiesis (CH) among 9/11 World Trade Center first responders is accompanied by uncharacteristic mutations in younger responders and an elevated risk of blood cancer.

Power and Precarity: First Generation Students Compose Digital Stories of Class Mobility
1. Introduction Though many in the U.S. believe that colleges are engines of opportunity, higher education has long replicated social inequalities and campuses themselves are remarkably silent about social class and class mobility (Baum and McPherson 2022; Walkerdine 2021). As Bell Hooks (1994, p. 177) wrote, “nowhere is there a more intense silence about the reality of class differences than in educational settings”.
Summary of Research: Collaboration Between Healthcare Professionals and People with Multiple Sclerosis to Develop Communication Tools to Improve the Standard of Multiple Sclerosis Care | Advances in Therapy
Abstract This is a summary of a previously published paper: Joint Healthcare Professional and Patient Development of Communication Tools to Improve the Standard of MS Care. It describes a collaboration between people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and healthcare professionals (HCPs) to identify challenges in multiple sclerosis (MS) care and design tools to improve communication during consultations.

Mitochondrial variant enrichment from high-throughput single-cell RNA sequencing resolves clonal populations - Nature Biotechnology
Abstract The combination of single-cell transcriptomics with mitochondrial DNA variant detection can be used to establish lineage relationships in primary human cells, but current methods are not scalable to interrogate complex tissues. Here, we combine common 3′ single-cell RNA-sequencing protocols with mitochondrial transcriptome enrichment to increase coverage by more than 50-fold, enabling high-confidence mutation detection.

Lawsonia intracellularis associated equine proliferative enteropathy in Danish weanling foals - Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica
To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first peer-reviewed report describing the clinical aspects of foals with L. intracellularis associated EPE in Scandinavia. This study supports that L. intracellularis not only circulates and foals are in contact with the bacterium, but also causes clinical disease (EPE) in Denmark. Therefore, EPE should be considered a differential diagnosis in Danish weanlings. Lawsonia intracellularis is present in the majority (94%) of Danish pig farms [32]. A screening for L.
