Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

The Ceres Courier

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I'm a writer – we should try all writing implements.

How is social media changing news?

It's immediate

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

It's a toss-up between Ron Burgandy and Carrie Bradshaw.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It's my passion. I love telling stories. Tracking down the origins of something, sharing information, and making it easy-to-understand.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Send me your story ideas on LinkedIn. I am at the whims of the editors but if I'm interested, I'll work hard to get it placed.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google's suite of tools and a variety of project management and CMS solutions that are chosen by the outlets I work for.

What's your favorite social network?

LinkedIn

Why did you become a journalist?

I'm infinitely curious. I'm always asking questions

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. I was a features editor, editorial editor, and columnist.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A controversial (potential) street renaming in North Portland. It was a fascinating intersection of identity, race, and gentrification.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work hard, practice, and never take no for an answer.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Working hours

What's your favorite drink?

I love cold-brewed hibiscus tea with a squeeze of lime in it or a true non-dairy horchata with plenty of cinnamon.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Cooking or hanging out with my family on a hike, playing a game, or soaking up some sun.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New York Times, The Atlantic

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That we're all stuffy, elitists entrenched in molecular gastronomy.
