Vanya Vaidehi Bhargav’s first book provides a comprehensive analysis of Lala Lajpat Rai’s political thought from his first major foray into Indian nationalist politics in 1888 to his death in 1928. Eschewing a monolithic reading of Rai as a “Hindu nationalist”, “majoritarian”, or “rigid secularist”, Bhargav successfully pushes back against such a “hard boundary” (p. xxviii) and much of the myth-making prevalent in India’s current political environment.
