Summary High occurrence of E. coli ST131 clade-C in humans and dogs in Sri Lanka is noted. Around 11% of the ST131 isolates were carbapenem resistant. Dog E. coli isolates showed comparable resistance rates to humans, except for amoxicillin-clavulanate and amikacin. 1 Introduction Multidrug-resistant (MDR) extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) clones (i.e., those resistant to more than three classes of antimicrobials) pose a significant threat to public health (Alhashash et al. 2013).
