Synthesis and Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerisation of O-Alkoxy Benzothiadiazole Paracyclophane-1,9-dienes Yurachat Janpatompong, Venukrishnan Komanduri, Raja Khan and Michael Turner Abstract Ortho-diethylhexyloxyphenylene benzothiadiazole paracyclophane-1,9-diene as a mixture of diastereomers was synthesized by a sequential benzyne Stevens rearrangement, oxidation and pyrolysis of a dithia[3.3]paracyclophane.
Dialkoxy- and dialkyl-substituted phenylene benzothiadiazole paracyclophane-1,9-diene monomers undergo living ring-opening metathesis polymerization using ruthenium carbene initiators (G3) to give regularly alternating cis,trans-poly(p-phenylenevinylene) benzothiadiazole copolymers. These polymers can be readily isomerized in dilute solution using visible light to the all-trans polymers.
