Federal-Ontario task force to guide car industry strategy
In a bid to coordinate and optimize strategies affecting Ontario’s auto manufacturing sector, the province and the federal government have announced a new joint task force. This comes as pressures from the U.S. and China continue to cause upheaval within Ontario’s auto manufacturing industry.
Built for Business: Ontario’s Blueprint for Growth, Resilience, and Prosperity
Since taking office in June 2018, our government has been making Ontario, Canada, the best destination for businesses to invest, expand, and create good-paying jobs. We did this by working relentlessly to lower the cost of doing business in Ontario by $8 billion annually, lowering taxes, and cutting over 550 pieces of unnecessary red tape – and the results speak for themselves.
How Ontario is Seizing Once-In-A-Generation Opportunities
Our province is the only place in the world where five major auto assemblers currently operate – Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Honda, and Toyota. And, just last year – Volkswagen announced that its subsidiary PowerCo would be joining Ontario’s automotive landscape as the sixth major presence, establishing an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility set for operation in 2027.

Detroit 3 investments the first taste of a turnaround, Ontario says
EDITOR'S NOTE: This op-ed was written by Vic Fedeli, the Ontario minister of economic development, job creation and trade. It appeared in the December 2020 print edition of Automotive News Canada. It was a banner round of contract talks between Unifor and the Detroit Three automakers in 2020. Over several months, we saw the automakers pledge nearly $5 billion in investments, with upgrades and new technologies for facilities across the province.
FEDELI: Support local manufacturers with help of ‘Ontario Made’ logo Original
Ontario is the economic engine of Canada, and the plants, factories and workers in every corner of our province are the pistons that drive that engine. And when we issued the call for help in the fight against COVID-19, they answered. Through our Ontario Together web portal, we received thousands of submissions from companies eager to retool their operations and supply Ontario’s front lines with much-needed equipment and supplies.
FEDELI: A made-in-Ontario response to battle COVID-19
The impact of COVID-19 is affecting us all, on a global level and as Canadians. But what we share, as a people, and as a province, is our Ontario spirit — our ability to roll up our sleeves and work together to support one another during this challenging time. Vic Fedeli: Ontario is leading the way on jobs thanks to the Ford government
By Vic Fedeli Last year was a tremendously successful one in Ontario for job creation, and the numbers prove it. Statistics Canada could not have stated it any better, announcing “Full-time employment growth in Canada driven by gains in Ontario.” Nationally there were 320,000 net new jobs added last year (mostly full-time), with 243,000 created in Ontario. That’s 76 per cent of all jobs created in Canada, despite being home to 38 per cent of the population.

FEDELI: Open for business is about taking action
When our government talks about being open for business and open for jobs, it’s not a slogan. It’s a philosophy that runs to the heart of a core commitment we made to the people of Ontario — to create and protect good jobs. Since coming to office, 272,400 new jobs have been created for Ontario workers, including 41,100 this month alone, which led the nation. Most of those are full-time positions, and most of them are in the private sector.

High-Quality Talent: The Not-So-Secret Ingredient in Canada’s Economic Recipe for Success
Last year, Toronto’s tech “brain gain” (57,600) surpassed the Bay Area (54,700) by 3,000 workers. You don’t have to be Warren Buffet to understand that high-quality talent equals strong businesses, more jobs and, ultimately, economic growth. To that point, Canada boasts one of the most educated workforces in the world with over 55 percent of Canadians having graduated from postsecondary institutions.
Fedeli: State of Ontario’s finances is no fiction
It’s time for those who are in fiscal denial to come to terms with the reality we face We shouldn’t kid ourselves and believe for one second that the previous Wynne Liberal government was trying to get its fiscal house in order. Or, as some irrationally suggest, that the province’s fiscal challenges have been wildly exaggerated.

FEDELI: Union bosses, special interests fear change
Various groups protest at a May Day rally at Queens Park on May 1. (Jack Boland, Postmedia) Share Adjust Comment Print The protest signs and chanting are becoming more frequent on the front lawn of Queen’s Park, which is a bit puzzling. It appears the union leadership and special interests are fighting to maintain a bloated health-care bureaucracy, failing math scores in our schools, inefficient and outdated programs and services, and a massive deficit and spiralling debt.

Fear-mongering about PCs ‘all for not’
Well, it’s now a proven fact that all the fear-mongering was all for not. The 2019 provincial budget is a comprehensive and sustainable plan that balances the books in five years while protecting the critical public services — such as health care and education — Ontario families rely upon each and every day. The education budget increases by $700 million this year. And we are investing $13 billion over 10 years in capital improvements; $1.4 billion this year alone.
FEDELI: Ontario won’t let short cannabis supply leave entrepreneurs dry
If Ontario’s Government for the People had its way, there would be as many cannabis retail stores across the province as the market could sustain. We believe in a free market, promoting innovative entrepreneurs, and creating a province that is open for business. This is the best approach to eliminating the illegal market and keeping our children and youth safe. Unfortunately, there is a serious cannabis supply shortage created by the federal government.

FEDELI: Digging Ontario out of a massive fiscal hole
In an attempt to curb inflation and prevent an overheated economy, the Bank of Canada raised interest rates again this past month. While this move signals steady economic growth, it will inevitably increase the cost of borrowing. For the government of Ontario, interest rate increases pose a significant challenge.
Vic Fedeli: We’ll fix Ontario’s fiscal mess without deep cuts or tax hikes
Last month, I had to deliver the sobering news to Ontario families and businesses that the previous government left us with a $15 billion deficit for the year 2018-19. It’s a difficult number for many people to comprehend, but it signifies an urgent need to address a dilemma that is both fiscal and moral in nature. Our public debt is a whopping $338 billion.
GUEST COLUMN: Shining a light on the true state of Ontario’s finances
It is not uncommon in politics for a new government to call its predecessors’ numbers into question. The new guys open the books and proclaim their horror about the true state of the public finances. So how is this time any different? Let me tell you that what happened under the previous Liberal government’s watch is very different.
Hope on the horizon | North Bay Nugget
As we approach the new year, it’s clear 2017 was quite eventful. Unfortunately, in Ontario we still pay amongst the highest hydro rates in North America, and taxes and fees continued to rise. The most concerning issue was news about the job statistics in the North. While Ontario, as a whole, suffered from weak economic performance in recent years, the pain was not spread evenly. Toronto and Ottawa alone created 99 per cent of all new jobs between 2008-16.
Trump bump or Trump slump? | North Bay Nugget
While much of Ontario’s finances depend on controlling spending, the other half of the equation is revenue. Aside from new taxes, revenue is dependent on growth, and that brings us to the elephant in the room. On Nov. 8, 2016, Donald J. Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, and he took office on Jan. 20, 2017. Trump's campaign slogan was Make America Great Again, and that is exactly what he intends to do.
Province must listen to municipalities
Municipal elections across Ontario swept in a wave of fresh faces, with seven out of the 10 largest cities in the province electing a new mayor, including Toronto. There was also considerable change in many smaller cities and towns These new mayors will have a strong mandate and an important voice in working with provincial and federal governments. As a candidate for the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, I have spoken up strongly about the role of municipal governments.
