Victor Balta’s Biography
A print and online journalist for more than 15 years, I am now leading a team of talented writers and a staff photographer who gather and communicate news stories from the University of Washington.
Before moving back to the west coast, I was the online news planning editor for Al Jazeera America in New York, which launched on Aug. 20, 2013. I was responsible for planning the website's coverage of major stories, coordinating with the TV news team to develop cross-platform packages, assigning and editing news features and breaking news coverage from a network of freelance contributors across the country who find the stories others weren't reporting.
Previously, I ran the daily online editorial operations of Current TV, the politics, news analysis and commentary channel available in more than 60 million homes nationwide. Before joining Current in March 2011, I was the managing producer at Comcast.net, developing and overseeing content strategy and production across all the major channels (news, sports, finance, entertainment and music).
I've embraced and honed the power of social media, community building and analytics tools to make informed, data-driven editorial decisions, innovate content and increase traffic at comcast.net and current.com.
I moved online in 2006 after a decade in print as a reporter, columnist and TV critic for regional newspapers in Northern California and Washington. As a writer and editor, I covered education, local and state government, crime, and several major sporting events, in addition to conducting countless red-carpet interviews and reviewing numerous concerts.
