Opinion: A 'yes' vote on Proposition 14 is a vote for Texas families
Most of us go through life thinking that it will never happen to us, that we will never have to watch our loved ones lose their memories, their personalities, or their health. But today there are 1.1 million Texans providing care for the 459,000 Texans who are living with the devastation of Alzheimer's disease. There are also an estimated 52,500 Texans living with Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Ford: It’s Time for Real Health Care Reforms, Not Those That Stymie Life-Saving Advances – Rio Grande Guardian
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... The U.S. is the world’s leader in the development of life-saving biopharmaceutical advances and breakthroughs, and Texas plays a significant role in fueling that innovation. Thousands of life science and biotech companies call Texas home, supporting tens of thousands of jobs and delivering billions of dollars in economic impact. But a new plan from the Trump Administration could undermine this progress and the innovation driven by our market-based economy.
Ford: Federal EPIC Act is Critical for Patients, Innovation – Rio Grande Guardian
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... The new and now deadly measles outbreak in Texas is a reminder to us all that health care challenges can confront us when we least expect them. Unfortunately, challenges to American health care will only increase if Congress fails to act on a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that is undermining medical research and innovation and putting the development of cures and treatments at risk.
If the Trump tax cuts expire, Texas businesses and workers will feel the pain | Opinion
As Congress considers the future of corporate tax rates, it is crucial to acknowledge the substantial benefits that Texas’ manufacturing sector has gained from the 2017 tax cuts. These tax cuts, enacted during President Donald Trump’s first term, have empowered manufacturers to reinvest in their businesses, create jobs and increase wages.
Another view: New NIST framework threatens Texas' innovation excellence Original
Everything is bigger in Texas, including life science innovation. The Lone Star State is responsible for one in five clinical studies throughout the country – and spends $6.6 billion on research and development annually.

Reject government-mandated drug price-setting
In boxing, it's called the old one-two punch. In football, it's piling on. In basketball, back-to-back, in-your-face dunks. That's what Washington is trying to do to patients who need new drugs to help them fight cancers, neurological illnesses and rare and infectious diseases. Texas leaders need to step up and stop it. Let me explain. First, we have a huge law Congress passed last year called the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

Perryman: Jobs By the Numbers – Rio Grande Guardian
Texas continues to shatter records for new jobs. The expansion has been broad based, both in terms of industries and geographic areas. Our latest projections call for notable employment gains over the next five years, though the pace will vary along with external conditions. By 2027, the level of employment in Texas is forecast to rise from 13.9 million in 2022 to 15.2 million. That’s a gain of some 1.3 million net new jobs and a total increase over the five-year period of 9.5%.
Ramsey: How much longer do victims of the Hayes Sammons pesticide plant have to wait for justice? – Rio Grande Guardian
As a child in Mission, Texas, curiosity caused me to watch cars trapped up to their axles in the old mud pit that is now the highway loop around Mission. I noticed the white powder that never melted in the mud. After many years of research, I learned that the white powder was toxic chemical dust from the Hayes Sammons plant where pesticides and Agent Orange used in the Vietnam war were created.
Hinojosa: 14 Propositions Will Be On The Ballot This November – Rio Grande Guardian
On November 7th, Texans will have the opportunity to make their voices heard by voting on 14 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution. These amendments cover a wide range of issues that are important to our state, and it is crucial that we take the time to educate ourselves and participate in this democratic process. As your State Senator, I supported the passage of the resolutions calling for these propositions during the legislative session.

Ford: Hospital prescription drug program deserves closer look
The phrase 340B may sound like some technical jargon far removed from your own personal health care. It’s a federal drug pricing program named for the section of the authorizing legislation that Congress passed in 1992 with broad, bipartisan support. Like some government programs, what starts as a positive can, over time, find itself wandering from its original intent. But what’s worse, in this case, the 340B program is failing that original intent: to benefit low-income patients.

Commentary: Federal drug program serves hospitals, not patients
The 340B drug discount program was started to allow nonprofit hospitals receiving federal funds to stretch scarce resources as far as possible, reaching more eligible patients and providing more services. The program requires pharmaceutical manufacturers to discount prescriptions for qualifying safety-net hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities that serve large populations of uninsured, low-income or vulnerable patients.
Picture this next time you visit a restaurant. The kitchen makes the food and a waiter delivers the dish to your table, but with an added complexity: the waiter negotiated the cost of your enchilada plate with the kitchen, and you’ll learn the price when you receive the check. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where customers would be content with this arrangement. Yet, in the pharmaceutical industry, this takes place daily.
