Rosé? For Summer? Groundbreaking!
As sure as the sun rises, the people demand rosé when it gets warm out. Despite its popularity, pink wine has a bit of a basic reputation among aficionados; it’s often considered an unserious drink you can throw an ice cube into without remorse. As such, many large-scale wineries treat it as exactly that: an inexpensive, easy-to-produce product that doesn’t require much sophistication to sell well.

Do You Really Have To Decant Your Wine?
Illustration, Isie Yang. For those who grew up with bulbous, never-used decanters in dusty, never-opened cabinets, you might’ve wondered how, if ever, they get used. Contrary to popular belief, decanting is less about exposing a wine to oxygen and more about removing sediment from an older vintage. As it ages, wine naturally will “throw” sediment in the bottle that, while harmless, is unpleasant to drink. Decanters are usually made out of clear glass so that the sediment is clearly visible.
Does The Shape Of Your Wine Glass Actually Matter?
Yes, we noticed that you don’t have any wine glasses. That’s fine if you’re sober, don’t have the cabinet space or simply don’t care for them. But we also get that picking the right wineglass can be as daunting as picking the wine itself. It’s easy to simply give up, but winemakers around the world agree: A wineglass is just a vessel you choose to put wine in. There are no hard and fast rules around material, style or shape. In 2023, anything goes.

The Irreverence and Irrelevance of White Culture, in Tweets
“What do you think about Obama?” The question caught me off guard. It was 2007, well before anyone really knew what it meant tohave a black POTUS, much less a 16 year old Canadian at a Key Club conference in rural Ontario. I didn’t know enough to give him an informed answer and told him as such. My chemistry teacher smiled at me and said that it was very mature of me to admit that I didn’t know something. The experience stuck with me ever since — why did I have this impulse for faking knowledge?
Brontez Purnell | That Dirty Blossoming, That Relentless Acquiescence
You’ll never meet a realer bitch than Brontez Purnell. The 41-year-old writer, musician, performance artist, and filmmaker speaks the truth like it’s his life’s calling. A decade before winning the Lambda Literary Award in Gay Fiction for his novel 100 Boyfriends, he told the organizatin, “I’m ultimately a communication and will use any dirty trick to get you to notice and understand me, be it my body or my words.” Both are extraordinarily effective.
Distances, Hesitations, Intimacies
Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight is about the intersection of Blackness, masculinity, and intimacy, but above all else, it's about queer Black men navigating other Black men, those who bear the most and least semblance to themselves. It's a movie for Black men who have experienced alienation as loss. Less coming-of-age and more coming-into-being, the film complicates insufficient narratives of Black manhood that rely on whiteness, or valourize trauma as triumph.
School Hop 2017
Last November, Canadian Art editors, contributors and artist facilitators participated in Canadian Art’s School Hop, an initiative started in 2003 to address the diminishing funding of arts programming in the public education system. Led by Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist Basil AlZeri and Canadian Art contributing editor and director of programs Nicholas Brown, these sessions give students access to a thriving, local art scene.
Flesh-Mech
Termed a “death opera” by director Joy Hui Lin in the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Japanese anime Attack on Titan is an extraordinary spectacle of violence that, in its searing depiction of on-screen death, blurs the distinctions between representation and reality. Titans—giant, grotesque humanoids that kill and eat humans with impunity—have forced what’s left of humanity behind a set of three enormous 50-foot walls.
The enduring power of aunties
When I think of the word “aunt,” a few scenes come to mind, like fleeting vignettes blurred softly at the edges. I think of my Aunt Pat, a sharp-witted, strict, and adventurous matriarch, leading my family in an exercise to determine our individual “love languages.” We each express our love differently, she’d say, and it was crucial that we understood those differences if we were to stick together.
Why Everybody is Talking About “Every. Now. Then”
Consider Bell from Camal Pirbhai and Camille Turner’s Wanted series—an immense conceptual photograph that has everything and nothing to do with Canada at the same time. Wanted takes newspaper ads placed by Canadian slave owners claiming their runaway slaves and recreates them as beguiling, defiant photographs. These images run against Canada’s self-serving narrative as deeply uncool, endlessly apologetic and cripplingly passive-aggressive.
Distances, Hesitations, Intimacies
Moonlight addresses the contradictory position of being a Black man alienated by your own Blackness. The protagonist experiences this from all sides — from his mother, from his chosen father, and from other young Black men. It's one thing for the word "family" to lose its meaning, it's another to feel arbitrarily and unjustly disconnected from your cultural heritage or worse, to be blamed and punished for it.
Yeezus v. The People
When I was 11, an uncle—which in Chinese families, means older family friend you have to respect for no reason—tried to teach me the difference between a nigga and a nigger. He told me that a nigga was someone who you wanted to be around because he was smart enough to not get shot. A nigger was the one you avoided, the one that’s stupid enough to burn blunts in a train station and not expect to get arrested.
NBA Players' Fashion Sense Is An Off-Court Revolution
In 2005, after an infamous brawl—forever known as “Malice at the Palace”—between Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons players escalated into a surreal battle royale involving fans, the NBA instituted a dress code. The first of its kind among major sports leagues, the code requires players to wear business or conservative attire while arriving to and departing from games, while injured on the bench, and out on official NBA business.
