Measured in motion
UniSuper chief member and advice officer Danielle Mair cherishes her tight-knit family and influential role models, whose strong work ethics and ambition have long-provided support. From Brisbane, where she continues to make her home, Mair initially envisioned a future in high school arts education. However, life had other plans; a gap year quickly transitioned into a career-defining moment as she found herself pulled into the world of financial services.
An education in leadership
NGS Super chief executive Natalie Previtera grew up in the Western Sydney suburb of Merrylands, where the importance of education was deeply embedded in her upbringing.
The team player
Brisbane is certainly missing a superstar lawyer in Edwina Maloney. With her inquisitive nature, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills, one could easily picture Maloney gracing the offices of top law firms in the river city CBD. Yet AMP's group executive of platforms gave up her once promising future in the legal profession for what would arguably become an even more impressive career in financial services.
Welcome to the future
After finishing high school, David Ferrall enrolled at the University of Tasmania, but decided to quit after three months. "I worked as a photographer for a newspaper at a creative studio in Tasmania. That didn't last very long, so I went travelling for a couple of years. I sailed around the world delivering yachts. Starting from Darwin to South Africa, around to Brazil, up to the Caribbean, then across to the UK before settling for a while in the south of France," he says.
From backstage to spotlight
Raised in Sydney's North Shore, navigating male-dominated spaces has been second nature for Helen de Mestre her whole life, in part due to having three older brothers. Today, as a mother of three boys, she jokingly quips that the male-driven narrative of her life shows no signs of letting up. I've learned that you can't take things personally in times of change. Often, it's about structural adjustments rather than individual headcounts.

Piecing the puzzle
Born and raised in Australia's capital, Aware Super head of retirement Jacki Ellis says her parents, who worked as public servants, made clear the value of working in a field that benefits the community. "Doing good for others, having a purpose in what you do for work - that's always been omnipresent for me and always felt important," she explains.
Cultivating success
If Cullen Gunn had to describe the Australian landscape in one word, it would be 'remarkable'. Gunn's strong connection to the environment started in his teens, after being introduced to sustainable farming through a family friend. Fast forward to today, and as founding director and chief executive of Kilter Rural, Gunn and his team work hard to transform yield profiles in Australian farmland, biodiversity and water assets.
The American City in A.D. 2025: A Considered Opinion
What will our cities be in 25 years? The question calls up a caricature, a grotesque vision of ultimate ghettoization. The vision involves a permanent underclass of poor people, largely defined by race, in rotting urban enclaves with no public transportation worthy of the name. An affluent class lives far off in automobile suburbs, probably gated. A skyscrapered business center rises like a sterile Acropolis. Government is off in what it calls a “campus” somewhere.
