Reflecting on your career going into 2024 – ‘We need to actively plan our path to our chosen career destination’ | TrueLove
As the end of year approaches, it's time to do an in-depth review of your career. There is an isiZulu proverb that says: “Uma ungazi ukuthi uyaphi noma umuphi umgwaqo uzokufikisa”. This is well translated by the famous quote by writer Lewis Carroll: “If you do not know where you are going, any road will lead you there.” There is great wisdom in this saying, and when I look at how many of us get bogged down in our humdrum lives, we are often on a road whose destination we do not know.
The future of Human Resources
The world of work has evolved rapidly in the past century having faced several revolutions. The first industrial revolution began in the 18th century it resulted in mechanization, enabling access to energy produced by steam engines. Whilst the 19th century gave us a new source of energy brought to being by gas; oil and electricity making the combustion engine possible, in so doing changing the means of transport across the globe.
Jumping from job to job | The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World News
Job-hopping historically has been seen as an indication of a lack of loyalty; naivety which is the luxury of youth; a display of an employee who lacks self-awareness or an inability to adjust or an individual who is merely money hungry.
Vumi Msweli: Hey Millennial, Earning Our Stripes Will Have Us Dominating the World
There is a saying I have found myself repeating incessantly as of late in many conversations with my millennial clients. “Do what you have to do, so you can do what you want to do.” Millennials are people born from approximately 1983 to the early 2000s. Many are hitting the corporate world with a slightly different world view that, at times, has senior management baffled and bewildered.
Discovering your caleo | The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World News
I recently had the pleasure of attending an event with some powerful female captains of industry of Southern Africa. There was an interesting exercise we did based on the concept of caleo, the Latin word meaning flame. In essence, the point of the activity was answering the question what sets you ablaze? What lights your fire? The understanding of one’s passion assists in clearly defining one’s purpose. A clear comprehension of one’s purpose and passion can aid in the positioning of one’s brand.
Personal branding | The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World News
Power of Personal braning. Photo/Jennifer Grant International Personal branding has fast become a buzz word that we throw around nodding knowingly, but few of us really comprehend its power. Personal branding is described by Influencer Marketing Hub as the image people see of you, it is how you promote yourself and the telling of your story. In essence, it is how you market yourself and your career as a brand.
Creating connections | The Guardian Nigeria Newspaper - Nigeria and World News
“Hello this is your pilot speaking, welcome aboard Flight SA60 to…” Those may just be the sweetest words spoken in the English language. Perhaps it’s my love of travelling, the exhilarating feeling of seeing an unknown city’s lights twinkle beneath you before landing. Or it’s the random intense conversation with the passenger besides you as you feign calmness through a rather turbulent flight.
The art of negotiation
[File] Career development There are few dances between two parties as calculating, nerve wracking and exhilarating as the dance of negotiation. It is a frenzy to acquire as much as you can without being unreasonable or deemed by the opposing party as unrealistic or uncompromising. This often plays out in our careers as we negotiate our contracts. From a brand employment contract to a promotion with your existing employer.
Nigeria: Driving Whilst Disengaged
opinion By Vumile Msweli Many employees drive their careers whilst disengaged. Walking into work to do the bare minimum, keep their head down, collect their salary and exhale in gratitude when the weekend arrives, sigh in despair when it ends and Monday rears her ugly head. Then they repeat the cycle all over again. These symptoms are a clear indication of disengagement. Recent studies show that 68 per cent of employees are disengaged at work.
Work smarter not harder
Traditional long-held beliefs that to be successful at work one must work hard are fast becoming redundant. The thought that being the first person to be at the office and being the last to leave may give rise to the perception that you are a hard worker, but in reality does not mean you are the most productive employee. When we take a look to the East we see the Japanese phenomena known as karōshi. This is translated as death from overwork.
Leveraging LinkedIn
One of the most underutilised social platforms for career expansion is the wonder that is LinkedIn. It is a centralised hub that hosts your potential next client, employer, recruiter, thought leaders and HR professionals. It allows for colleagues across the globe to connect and share ideas, for head-hunters to effectively recruit staff; for thought leaders to share their opinions; for strangers to connect in business; offer career data on individuals and organisations to share their views.
