1 INTRODUCTION Aquatic macroinvertebrates are frequently used in aquatic monitoring programs because they are widespread, diverse species having a wide range of tolerance to differing environmental conditions, they have limited migration patterns, they are inexpensively and easily sampled without detrimental effects to other resident biota, and they typically have short lifespans (EPA, 1990; Platts et al., 1983; Rosenberg & Resh, 1993).
