CROP REPORTS Murilo Maeda, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Cotton Specialist, Lubbock: “Dry conditions have taken hold in most of West Texas. Parts of the Amarillo-Panhandle keep catching a few rain showers here and there. For the most part, irrigation is in full swing where it’s available. Where it’s not, the crop is feeling it. There are decent looking dryland fields, but those will need rain very soon.” “Peak bloom is the plant’s maximum demand for nitrogen.
Georgia Sorghum: 3 Considerations for Planting After Reflex Treated Watermelons
©Debra L Ferguson Stock Images Been getting a few questions about planting grain sorghum following watermelons that were previously treated with Reflex. Here are a few things to think about: 1. Arkansas: Soy Acres Lowest in 5 Decades; Cotton Continues Expansion
Arkansas’ soybean acreage has dropped to its lowest point since 1960, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service crops resurvey figures released Monday. When NASS released its June 30 acreage report, the organization said it would resurvey soybean and cotton crops in Arkansas, as a wet spring and flooding delayed planting or forced replanting. The new figures peg Arkansas soybeans at 2.65 million acres, down 590,000 acres from 2018.

Georgia Pecans: Time for Full Capacity on Irrigation
Texas A&M AgriLife Communications photo by Robert Burns Its time to crank up the irrigation in pecans orchards as shell hardening is completed and kernel filling begins. All irrigation systems should be at full capacity from now through mid September in orchards bearing a commercial crop. This means 3600-4000 gal/acre/day for drip and micro-sprinkler systems and 1.5″-2″ per week for solid set sprinklers. With a 2″ rain, all systems can be turned off for 3 days before resuming irrigation.

Ohio Corn: Estimating Yield Losses in Stressed Fields
Many corn fields are still silking (and some are just past the mid-vegetative stages)….so, it may seem a little early to discuss estimating grain yields. However, according to the most recent NASS crop report, for the week ending Aug. 8, 2019, 25% of the corn crop has reached the dough stage (compared to 63% for the 5 year average). Corn growers with drought damaged fields and late plantings may want to estimate grain yields prior to harvest in order to help with marketing and harvest plans.

This month’s 2019/20 U.S. cotton outlook includes higher beginning stocks, production, exports, and ending stocks. Production for the 2019 crop is raised 2 percent to 22.5 million bales, on NASS’s first survey-based production forecast.
