Mechanism of Hydrogen Ion Buffering in Natural Waters
The objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive, integrated concept of the nature and interplay of capacity factors of the principal buffer systems indigenous to freshwaters. Fundamental acid-base equilibria pertinent to natural waters were examined in detail, with particular emphasis on a rigorous quantitative interpretation of the CO2- HC03--C03- system. A graphic method is presented of chemical equilibria.
Differences in Sentinel Node Biopsy and Targeted Axillary Dissection Following Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy-Reply
Differences in Sentinel Node Biopsy and Targeted Axillary Dissection Following Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy—Reply In Reply We thank Thorat for their comments and the opportunity to respond to their concerns. In a meta-analysis of 13 studies, the false-negative rate (FNR) of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) with removal of 3 or more SLNs was 4%.

Association of Axillary Dissection With Systemic Therapy in Patients With Clinically Node-Positive Breast Cancer
Key Points Question Is the omission of axillary dissection in patients with clinically node-positive breast cancer associated with systemic therapy in the upfront surgery and postneoadjuvant setting? Findings In this international cohort study embedded in a randomized clinical trial, a total of 500 patients had a high nodal tumor burden and were significantly understaged when axillary dissection was omitted. Nevertheless, this did not change adjuvant and postneoadjuvant systemic therapy.
The forgotten node: Axillary surgery mandates expertise
The therapeutic role of axillary dissection in breast cancer is gradually abandoned. However, in some cases axillary dissection is still indicated, and this mandates expertise in planning the operation according to imaging, understanding of current methods of axillary marking, and expertise in performing a more radical resection. In this comment we describe cases of gross nodal disease that was left behind at the time of axillary dissection and was later noted on a radiation planning CT.
Adsorption of toxic and carcinogenic compounds from water
The Michigan Adsorption Design and Application Model—applied here to seven specific toxic or carcinogenic compounds found in US surface waters and groundwaters—is being used for data synthesis and for simulation and prediction of the performance of carbon beds in removing trace quantities of such compounds under conditions approximating water treatment practice.
Synthetic adsorbents and activated carbons for water treatment: overview and experimental comparisons
The first of a two-part series evaluating alternative adsorbents for removal of trace organics from water supplies, this paper presents an overview of previous work and an experimental comparison of representative granular activated carbons and eight of the more promising synthetic adsorbents for adsorption of selected classes of organic compounds. Particular emphasis is placed on comparative equilibrium performance.
