NYC carriage horses will have safe homes
Opponents of the New York City Council bill to phase out horse-drawn carriage rides (Intro 943) have again trotted out a tired refrain in their persistent efforts to stymie reform: falsely asserting that the 160 horses at issue will be condemned to slaughterhouses unless the carriage wheels keep turning.

Barred owls in the crosshairs: A costly proposition doomed to fail
Last month in Virginia, a barred owl managed to shimmy down a chimney and perched on the family’s Christmas tree, displacing the star placed at its apex. The good folks at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington deployed, and with the yuletide blessing of the homeowners, they set the bird free. That same month, from Iowa to Massachusetts, kind-hearted people took in barred owls struck by cars and delivered them to wildlife veterinarians who did their best to put them back together.
Marin Voice: Plan to kill owls puts U.S. on never-ending treadmill of extermination
Last month in Virginia, news reports told the story of a barred owl that shimmied down a chimney and perched on the family’s Christmas tree, displacing the star placed at its apex. Around the same time, from Iowa to Massachusetts, there were a series of stories about kind-hearted people coming to the aid of barred owls struck by cars, handing off the injured creatures to wildlife veterinarians who did their best to put them back together.
Plan to shoot barred owls is myopic
In September, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced plan to orchestrate the largest raptor slaughter ever contemplated by any nation - a scheme to shoot 450,000 barred owls in the forests of Oregon, California, and Washington. The purpose of the 30-year kill plan is to reduce social competition between barred owls and better-known spotted owls.
Letter: Thank you Tammy Duckworth for introducing legislation to ban sale of kangaroo parts
Kudos to U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth for introducing legislation to ban the sale of kangaroo parts in the U.S. and stem the killing of 1.5 million of the iconic marsupials per annum. Demand for soccer cleats made from kangaroo skins is driving an unprecedented commercial slaughter of native wildlife.
Opinion: Pork industry exaggerating impact of Prop 12
If you listen to the arguments from the National Pork Producers’ Council you might think the entire U.S. pig industry was on the verge of collapse because of the market effects of Prop 12 in California and Question 3 in Massachusetts. The laws are exerting, according to critics, an “extra-territorial” effect. The applause line aimed at conventional farmers is that California is telling farmers in Iowa and North Carolina how to raise pigs. The reality is quite different.
Animal Welfare, Conservation Groups Announce Lawsuit Original
Washington, D.C., July 10, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Following an earlier Notice of Intent to Sue, a coalition of organizations has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) for its refusal to give Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections to the gray wolves in the West, in violation of the ESA and the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).
One more reason to secure the Mexico border: Smuggling drives the cockfighting trade | Opinion
Wayne Pacelle June 21, 2024 at 7:08 AM·4 min read There is a border problem, and it’s unknown to most Americans. It’s a criminal form of trafficking. It involves scores of individual victims crossing the Rio Grande. It is a public safety threat and a massive expense to American taxpayers. In this case, I refer to the cockfighting trade. Cockfighting is outlawed in every state, and it is a felony in most.

Animal Wellness Action urges Sublette County Attorney and Sheriff to bring felony-level animal cruelty charges against Daniel resident Cody Roberts
Opinion Posted Friday, April 5, 2024 12:00 am Running over and crushing an animal with a snowmobile, binding the battered and wounded animal’s mouth shut, and deciding to further torment the creature in front of an audience rather than putting him out of his misery is the textbook definition of malicious cruelty. A remorseless, cruel monster like this is a threat to other animals, and a threat to people.
China’s Smithfield Foods Pushes the EATS Act in Congress
The EATS Act is an assault on states’ rights and an invitation for China to bring its high-rise factory farms to the homeland. China’s 1.4 billion citizens consume their weight in pigs every year. 700 million animals. 192 billion pounds of pig. In 2018, a highly contagious and deadly viral disease, African Swine Fever (ASF), invaded China’s hogs. Tens of millions of the intelligent, sensate animals died outside the walls of slaughterhouses.
Bring an End to Cockfighting and Dogfighting
To the Editor: A tip of the hat to Congressman Jeff Van Drew and Senator Cory Booker for collaborating on a bipartisan bill to combat the scourges of dogfighting and cockfighting. New Jersey is hardly immune from this form of barbaric treatment of animals. In March, there was a major cockfighting bust in Galloway Township, and a month earlier, there was a dogfighting ring broken up in Monmouth County.
Guest commentary: Support legislation to curb animal fighting
New Jersey’s federal lawmakers are at the forefront of a national effort to crack down on the scourges of dogfighting and cockfighting. And it’s not a moment too soon, with local law enforcement uncovering animal fighting rings from Atlantic County to Monmouth County and reminding citizens that staged animal fights fester largely unknown to a populace that thought this problem was settled decades ago.
Pork industry leaders tone deaf on animal welfare
It was big news for animal welfare advocates and consumers when McDonald’s recently announced it had gone 100% cage-free, two years ahead of schedule, for sourcing eggs for its breakfast offerings. That accelerated timeline serves as the most recent indicator of the momentum for ending the era of cage confinement of farm animals that originated in the 1960s and quickly came to dominate some sectors of agriculture, most notably egg and pork production.
Letters to the Editor: A Call for Preservation Over Eradication
Dear Editor, The federal government – in this case, the National Park Service (NPS) –isn’t listening to key stakeholders on an issue of importance to thousands of North Dakotans. In truth, NPS isn’t listening to national voices, either. NPS seems hellbent to execute plans to remove a small but culturally and ecologically significant population of free-roaming wild horses within the Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP).
