How to Preach About Anxiety
Brian dropped by my campus ministry office one day to chat. This was not uncommon as he was one of the students I knew best. He wanted to share about his anxiety, which he had managed to keep hidden during the year and a half I had known him. Affable and handsome, shy but determined, Brian was well-liked by all of his classmates and professors. Yet he told me about history with anxiety, the medications he had been prescribed in high school, the various triggers he had learned to avoid or cope with.
Biblical Theology and the Sermon
The sermon is meant to be drenched with the theology of Scripture, which is why biblical theology is so vital, especially when we understand what biblical theology is. Put simply, and this is the definition we provide in our volume, Biblical Theology: A Canonical, Thematic, and Ethical Approach, “Biblical theology is the theology of the Bible.” In other words, biblical theology is not our own theology, or that of our church or denomination; it is the theology of the biblical writers themselves.
Goldilocks and the Streets of Gold
Goldilocks and the Streets of Gold The difficulty of preaching about heaven. Image: JasonDoiy / Getty Remember Goldilocks? Remember how terrified she was when she awakened staring into the teeth of three angry bears? What you don’t know is that Goldie’s near-death experience later got her to think about eternity. Never much of a church goer before her brush with the bears, she ultimately decided to visit three churches in her neighborhood, attending each one for a full year.
Throwback Thursday: Wayne Shaw and ‘Finishing Well’
We received word this morning of the death of Dr. Wayne E. Shaw, dean emeritus with Lincoln (Ill.) Christian University. The 1954 graduate of Lincoln Bible Institute started preaching upon arriving at the school in 1950 and, over time, preached everywhere from small country churches on up to the stage at the North American Christian Convention.
Preaching that Addresses Suicide from the Pulpit
“In time, even hope demolished can become hope rebuilt, if it is realistic and rooted, not just in the cross and the empty tomb but also in the garden and the sweat-like blood.” Zack Eswine - Spurgeon’s Sorrows: Realistic Hope for Those Who Suffer from Depression Pastor John was confronted by the death of Megan, a sixteen-year-old who died by suicide in her home. It was his first funeral. Sam died in a suspicious car accident—later ruled by the coroner as a suicide.
Preaching that Builds Bridges
Preaching that Builds Bridges Lessons from John Stott at His 100th Birthday Image: Jonathan D. Greene / Lightstock April 27, 2021, would have been the 100th birthday of a preacher whose influence reached every corner of the planet: John R.W. Stott (1921-2011). Before he turned 30, he was leading a thriving congregation in London; as the decades went by, the world became his parish. He inspired thousands of university students through international preaching trips.
Effects of Canagliflozin on Amino-Terminal Pro–B-Type Natriuretic Peptide

Effects of Canagliflozin on Amino-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide: Implications for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction
Abstract Background Canagliflozin reduces cardiovascular events including hospitalization for heart failure (HHF) in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk. Elevated amino-terminal pro–B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentrations are associated with HF diagnosis and predict cardiovascular risk. Objectives The purpose of this study was to measure NT-proBNP in CANVAS (Canagliflozin Cardiovascular Assessment Study) participants.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Trust
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Jul 2, 2020 at 9:00 AM Jul 2, 2020 at 9:01 AM “In God We Trust.” It’s on our coins and currency. You see it posted in public places. It is even mentioned in the last verse of our national anthem. In fact it is our national motto. The words to the national anthem were written during the war of 1812. While we almost never hear it sang, that last verse speaks volumes.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Abba
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Jun 25, 2020 at 9:00 AM Jun 25, 2020 at 9:22 AM Today, as I write this, it is Father’s Day. It has been a while since I got the traditional necktie for Father’s Day. It seems now I get T-shirts, with messages on them. These are T-shirts the kids think are funny. They may be. (I don’t know about the rest of you fathers, but I am not really fond of being a walking message board.) But I am glad my kids still love me enough to come and see me or call and to get me a gift.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Forgotten
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Jun 11, 2020 at 10:00 AM Jun 11, 2020 at 10:44 AM Several years ago, my wife and I accidently left our youngest son at church. Jesus could identify with that. His parents left him at church when he was 12 years old. If I remember correctly for some reason we had driven separate cars and each went home thinking the other was bringing our son with them. It didn’t take three days for us to learn that he was left behind. Some of our friends from church brought him home.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Crisis
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday May 28, 2020 at 8:00 AM May 28, 2020 at 8:01 AM Often a crisis in our lives precipitates a crisis of our faith. Our world is shaken, our faith gets shaken. Things seem out of control, we wonder if God is in control. Where is God? Can I trust Him? The Covid-19 crisis may have been that event for you. For some of us we remember the events of 9-11. It was shortly after 9-11 that Jill Briscoe wrote: He is still on the throne. He has not abdicated. He has not moved an inch.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Books
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday May 21, 2020 at 8:00 AM May 21, 2020 at 8:52 AM I have read many books, some I wanted to and some I had to. Some books I read for enjoyment and entertainment, some for knowledge and understanding. Some I read rapidly, some slowly. But the question I want to pose to you is, how do we best read the Bible? We can read it for enjoyment and we should. We can read it for understanding and we should.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Transformed
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday May 14, 2020 at 9:00 AM May 14, 2020 at 9:20 AM Romans 12:1-2 gives a profound description of what means to become and live as a Christian. Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Two Seas
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday May 7, 2020 at 8:00 AM May 7, 2020 at 8:59 AM There are two bodies of water in Palestine, the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. They are connected by the Jordan River which flows north to south directly along the Great Rift Valley. The Jordan River actually flows both into and out of the Sea of Galilee. Clear spring waters form the head waters of the Jordan River before it flows into the Sea of Galilee.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Control
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Apr 30, 2020 at 8:00 AM Apr 30, 2020 at 8:50 AM Like most of you, I like being in control. In the last few weeks, we have learned there are many things over which we have no control. One of the greatest temptations of every Christian is that desire to be in control. We want it our way. We have bought into Burger King’s slogan “Have it your way!” We sing with Frank Sinatra, “I did it my way!” Too often our way is in direct conflict with God’s way.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Count Your Blessings
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Apr 23, 2020 at 8:00 AM Apr 23, 2020 at 8:32 AM Johnson Oatman, Sr. was known to have a great singing voice. His son, Johnson Oatman, Jr. was known not for his singing voice, but for the songs he wrote. He wrote over 5,000 songs. Probably the one that stood the test of time and is still sung in many churches today is Count Your Blessings. This song was not only was popular in America, it was well-known in England.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Different
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Apr 16, 2020 at 8:00 AM Apr 16, 2020 at 8:06 AM Easter Sunday. I have fond memories of going to church, seeing lots of people, many wearing some new clothes and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. But this Easter was different. We stayed at home, except for an attempt to walk around the neighborhood, which was shortly aborted due to rain beginning to fall. I heard a sermon on the radio and watched three sermons on line, by friends of mine.
OPINION: Addressing the 2020 revenue failure
The legislature met this past Monday under very sobering circumstances to affirm Governor Stitt’s health emergency declaration, which was enacted under the Catastrophic Emergency Powers Act. This was created in 2003 in response to 9/11 to assist Oklahoma’s response to future national and state emergencies. This is the first time a governor has activated the act since its passage.
Dr. Shaw's Prescription: Martin Luther during a crisis
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Apr 9, 2020 at 8:00 AM Apr 9, 2020 at 8:54 AM Martin Luther knew what it was like to face a crisis. His life included nailing the 95 theses to the Wittenberg door in protest of the selling of indulgences, being called before the Diet of Worms (That is not what it sounds like. Worms was a town and a Diet was an assembly.) and being excommunicated by the pope. When Luther was called before the Emperor to defend what he had taught and written.
In the Words of C.S. Lewis
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Mar 26, 2020 at 8:00 AM Mar 26, 2020 at 8:47 AM There is serious concern that the coronavirus, formally named COVID-19 will become a crisis. The news is inundated with stories and stats, warnings and worry about COVID-19. It is being likened unto the Spanish flu during WWI. People have no immunity to, there is no vaccination against and no treatment for it.
Come
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Mar 19, 2020 at 11:00 AM Mar 19, 2020 at 11:51 AM Too often we have the misconception that God is remote and distant, that He is difficult, if not impossible, to find. But as I read through His word, I find that one of His favorite words is “come.” He invites us to come, come to Him.
Clinical outcomes with canagliflozin according to baseline body mass index: results from post hoc analyses of the CANVAS Program
Abstract Aims Sodium glucose co‐transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors reduce several cardiovascular risk factors, including plasma glucose, blood pressure, albuminuria and body weight. Long‐term treatment lowers risks of cardiovascular and renal events. The objective of this post hoc analysis was to determine the effects of canagliflozin treatment versus placebo on clinical outcomes in relation to body mass index (BMI).
The Greatest Commandment
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Jan 30, 2020 at 2:00 PM Jan 30, 2020 at 2:46 PM Every year the federal government turns out stacks and stacks of new laws and regulations. Every year the state government turns out piles of new laws and statutes. The Jews had 613 laws, 365 of which were negative. (That is not surprising, most laws tell us what not do.) Those could be boiled down to the ten commandments. Those are basic and foundational. One day an expert in the law come to Jesus to test, to trap.
Molossia
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Jan 23, 2020 at 1:00 PM Jan 23, 2020 at 1:58 PM Kevin Baugh is the self-proclaimed dictator of the Republic of Molossia. Molossia has a population of six. (Not exactly a megalopolis) Its geographical location is primarily Baugh’s front and back yard. The value of its currency, the valora, is tied to the cost of chocolate chip cookie dough. (Isn’t that sweet?) They have ban walruses, catfish, guns and almost everything from Texas.
Bowl Season
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Jan 16, 2020 at 1:00 PM Jan 16, 2020 at 1:54 PM It is bowl season. If you don’t know, you don’t care. (And that has nothing to do with cornflakes.) Bowl season, like hunting season, is a sport. Bowl season is like the seasons of the year, it comes about the same time each year. It has always seemed ironic to me that the best quarterbacks, or players of most any position for that matter, have never even been on the field.
Gifts
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Dec 26, 2019 at 10:00 AM Dec 26, 2019 at 10:02 AM Christmas time! Time of gift giving! Time of gift receiving! Did you get the gift or gifts that you wanted? Were the gifts you gave received with enthusiasm or indifference? I am told the day after Christmas is the great gift exchange day. We hear clichés associated with gift giving. It is not the gift; it’s the thought that counts.
Salvation
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Dec 19, 2019 at 11:00 AM Dec 19, 2019 at 11:56 AM So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there. He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying, “Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised. I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people.
Thankfulness
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Dec 5, 2019 at 10:00 AM Dec 5, 2019 at 10:58 AM For the time our children were young we tried to teach them to be thankful, at least we made sure they said “Thank you” to those who give them a present. But as every Christian knows the person to whom we ought to be the most thankful is Jesus Christ. So how can one express his thankfulness to Jesus? 1. Prayer. Simply tell Him.
According to...
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Nov 21, 2019 at 11:00 AM Nov 21, 2019 at 11:28 AM According to the calendar, Thanksgiving comes once a year, one day out of 365. According the God’s Word, thanksgiving should be each and every day. Thanksgiving is a necessary ingredient of a Christian lifestyle, something to be practiced daily. Psalms, the hymnbook of Israel, replete with praise and thanksgiving to God. I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

Accept It
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Nov 14, 2019 at 12:00 PM Nov 14, 2019 at 12:10 PM You may have heard on the news or read in the paper that last week Governor Stitt signed a pardon for my friend, Rhonda Bear. By her own admission, she will tell you that she deserved prison, for her it was a wakeup call. She will also tell you that prison saved her life. She will tell you that drugs were at the heart of her problems.
Make God a part of your marriage
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Oct 17, 2019 at 12:00 PM Oct 17, 2019 at 12:15 PM Today I had the honor and privilege of presenting a citation to Mr. & Mrs. Alvin Lee for their 70th wedding anniversary. My friend, Marty Dyer, the pastor of Newsong Church, asked me if I would come to their church this morning and make the presentation. I was glad to do it. While I did not know Alvin or Margret Lee, I figured they were amazing people to have been married for seven decades.
Just in case you ever wonder
Dr. Wayne Shaw Wednesday Oct 9, 2019 at 2:00 PM Oct 9, 2019 at 2:22 PM It was a cold January day 18 years ago when I met Mr. Bill Fasig. My wife and I had gone to Virginia to see our new granddaughter and it was while we were there that I met Bill. I had gone out to the car for something and he had just taken out the trash. He lived next door to my daughter, Teresa, and son-in-law, Dan. Dan and Teresa had told us about Bill. He made beautiful music.
Lonely
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Oct 3, 2019 at 11:00 AM Oct 3, 2019 at 11:37 AM When I went off to college, that was the loneliest day of my life. I was in a new environment. I did not know anyone. I really did not feel anyone cared. They say the loneliest people in the world are widowers. Men who lose their spouse seem to have a harder time dealing with the loss and the loneliness than women who lose their mate. Ironically, it is possible to feel very lonely in the midst of a crowd.
Major Milestones
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Sep 26, 2019 at 2:00 PM Sep 26, 2019 at 2:28 PM Saturday I attended two birthday celebrations. One was for a centenarian—that is someone who has lived 100 years; the other was for one who has lived 95 years. Those are major milestones. We were able to rejoice, not only in how long they had lived, but how well they had lived. Over the years they have been examples of faith and faithfulness.
Disappointed? Don't Panic
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Sep 19, 2019 at 11:00 AM Sep 19, 2019 at 11:00 AM Too often when we go through dark and difficult times we feel God has deserted us, that He is not there for us. We feel isolated and alone. Corrie Ten Boon used to say, “When the train goes through a tunnel and the world gets dark, do you jump out? Of course not. You sit still and trust the engineer to get you through.” Next time you are disappointed, don’t panic. Don‘t jump out. Don’t give up.
Loss of a Friend
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Sep 12, 2019 at 11:00 AM Sep 12, 2019 at 11:51 AM A friend of mine called yesterday morning. I have always looked forward to his calls and our subsequent conversation. Both he and his wife are in the category that we would call “very dear friends.” We have been to their home and they to ours. We have broken bread together in our homes and gone out to eat. We have swapped jokes and stories. We have attempted to solve all the world’s problems.
A Greater Rescue
Dr. Wayne Shaw Wednesday Aug 14, 2019 at 10:00 AM Aug 14, 2019 at 10:59 AM On August 5, 2010 a massive explosion caused a mine in Chile to cave-in. You may remember it trapped 33 miners almost a half a mile below the surface. In a desperate attempt to locate survivors, the mining company began drilling holes. Seventeen days after the accident, a note was found taped to a drill bit that had been pulled back to the surface.
Important Sacrifices
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday Aug 2, 2019 at 9:00 AM Aug 2, 2019 at 9:19 AM For those of us who remember that historic landing on the moon, it was indeed a very momentous event. Fifty years ago we put a man on the moon. It was Sunday, July 20, 1969, 3:17 Eastern Standard Time the lunar lander carrying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. Buzz Aldrin had with him the elements for Communion—bread and wine. He radioed: “Houston, this is Eagle. This is the Lunar Module pilot speaking.
Unfair Grace
Dr. Wayne Shaw Thursday Jul 25, 2019 at 11:00 AM Jul 25, 2019 at 11:21 AM It was 1960 when Francis Gary Powers, a U.S. pilot, was shot down while flying a spy mission over the USSR. A few years earlier, the FBI had captured William August Fisher, alias Rudolf Abel, and convicted him of espionage. The US sentenced Abel to 30 years of imprisonment. The Soviets similarly convicted Powers of espionage and sentenced him to 10 years.
God Given Youth
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday Jul 19, 2019 at 8:00 AM I have met some very remarkable, even very extraordinary young people. Here are some from early history of our country; in fact these first four were signers of the Declaration of Independence. George Wythe was three years old when he began a study of the classics. Benjamin Rush, “The Father of American Medicine,” was fourteen when he graduated from Princeton.
Age is no Reason to Quit
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday Jul 12, 2019 at 8:00 AM “I quit.” That is easy to say, also easy to do. Far too many have quit far too soon. Here are some examples of some who did not quit, who even late in life were making a contribution. Grandma Moses took up painting when she was in her 70’s and continued well past her 100th birthday, creating over 500 celebrated works of art. Those she finished at the age 100 are too rare and valuable for ordinary museums to afford.
Presidential Wisdom
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday Jul 5, 2019 at 8:00 AM This time of the year, we celebrate freedom with fireworks and flags. It is a time of festivity; boating, swimming, eating watermelons. But seriously we know something of the price of the freedom, we know that freedom is not free. We have seen pictures of row after row of crosses commemorating those who paid the ultimate price. We have met those who have come home with ugly battle scars and limbs blown off.
Mayoral Mercy
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday Jun 28, 2019 at 7:00 AM LaGuardia was mayor of New York City during the worst days of the Great Depression and all of WWII. New Yorkers adored him. They called him 'the Little Flower' because he was always wore a carnation in his lapel. He would ride the New York City fire trucks, take entire orphanages to baseball games, and when the New York newspapers were on strike, he would go on the radio and read the Sunday funnies to the kids.
The difference of a father
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday Jun 14, 2019 at 7:00 AM There are some things in life that we take for granted, until we lose them; like our eyesight, ability to walk or our dad. My dad was a hardworking and honest man. He knew what it was to face hardship. He began farming during the depression. He was a man of faith, a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Like many, I gained a greater appreciation for my dad after I had children of my own. Like many, I came to appreciate him even more after he was gone.
Value vs. Worth
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday Jun 7, 2019 at 7:00 AM What is your worth? I’m not talking about your net worth. What is your value? How do you value yourself? Self-esteem craze has almost become a cult. What is one’s self-esteem or self-worth based on? Largely the four B’s—beauty, brains, brawns or bucks. The world says you have value if you are beautiful. We worship beauty. But beauty will fade away. Brains, if you are smart, you are valuable. Does that mean the less intelligent are worth less?
Fear Diverts Focus
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday May 31, 2019 at 6:00 AM What do you fear? I check out a list of phobias on the internet. They list about 560 different phobias. That is a pretty comprehensive list. Now I am afraid I fear something they failed to list. It was in his first inaugural address that President Franklin Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is...fear itself.” Ironically this came at a time when our country was in a panic.
Remembering mothers
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday May 10, 2019 at 9:00 AM May 10, 2019 at 9:48 AM Looking for ideas, I perused quotes about mothers. The ones I like the best were from Abraham Lincoln. “All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” “No man is poor who has a Godly mother.” “I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.” Then I set out to learn a bit more about Lincoln’s mother.
Lessons from the Resurrection
Dr. Wayne Shaw Friday May 3, 2019 at 10:00 AM As each Gospel writer tells the story of the life of Jesus, they included the events they considered most important to the audience to whom they were writing. When it comes to the resurrection, they all include the fact that it was the women, specifically Mary Magdalene, who were the first to go the tomb and find it empty. There are two things about that fact that I find fascinating. First, they were going there with spices.
