NJEA president: PARCC can't be fixed
Wendell Steinhauer Published 10:36 a.m. ET March 10, 2015 | Updated 11:50 a.m. ET March 10, 2015 As expected, the PARCC exams are off to a rocky start in many places across New Jersey. Unavoidable weather delays aside, plenty of reports have cropped up of computers that won't log on, tests that suddenly close before students have finished and unreliable Internet access.
Op-Ed: ESSA Offers Opportunity for Schools to Change Course
With the anticipation and excitement of the new school year upon us, parents and educators have a unique opportunity to participate in shaping public education in New Jersey. Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the new federal education law passed late last year to replace the notorious No Child Left Behind (NCLB), critical decisions about our schools have been returned to the state and local districts.
Op-Ed: Constitutional Amendment Is Only Solution to NJ’s Pension Crisis
New Jersey’s public-pension systems are large and complex, but the principle underlying them is very simple. In exchange for a career of service, the state promises public employees a secure pension. Education experts agree that our schools have plenty of room for improvement, and today some of them offer suggestions.

As expected, the PARCC exams are off to a rocky start in many places across New Jersey. Unavoidable weather delays aside, plenty of reports have cropped up of computers that won't log on, tests that suddenly close before students have finished and unreliable Internet access. It's enough to call into question the validity of any results and makes a strong argument for the state Senate to pass legislation already approved by the Assembly to delay the use of PARCC results for at least three years.
