Radiology and Imaging
Many children visit radiology and imaging the same day they're seen by a Shriners Children’s physician, which means no time lost scheduling another appointment or driving somewhere else. Radiology and imaging is a noninvasive way for our pediatric specialists to see what is going on inside a patient, which helps determine the best treatment.

Halo Traction | Shriners Children’s
How It Works Your experienced Shriners Children's orthopedic surgeon attaches a lightweight metal ring (halo) to your child’s skull with small pins. Children are given general anesthesia and are not awake for this procedure.

Motion Analysis | Shriners Children’s
For some children, coordinating complex movements like running with their friends, picking up a pencil, or throwing a baseball can be uncomfortable, difficult or even impossible. As a child grows and develops, so does their ability to move. When a child has a condition that changes typical development and makes movement difficult, advanced diagnostic techniques may be necessary to understand fully what’s causing the movement problem.

Osteogenesis Imperfecta Types and Treatment
What Causes Osteogenesis Imperfecta? The cause of osteogenesis imperfecta can be traced back to genetics; more specifically, a gene defect that influences collagen production. Collagen is a protein that is vital to healthy bone development. With OI, the body either doesn't produce enough collagen, or the collagen that is produced doesn't work properly. Most children with OI inherit the gene defect from one or both parents, but this isn't always the case.
Metabolic Bone Disease
Pediatric Care Metabolic bone disease is an umbrella term for disorders that are caused by an abnormal bone cell function. There are two primary types of bone cells – those that build bone and those that remove bone. When the function of these cells is disrupted, it can cause a variety of different metabolic (related to metabolism) bone disorders.
Sports Medicine | Shriners Children's
Children are not small adults – which is why they should see a pediatric sports medicine physician for sports injuries. Whether playing sports, exercising, or having fun on the playground, sometimes children get hurt. At Shriners Children’s, we know children's bones, joints and muscles. We understand why injuries to growing bones and growth plates (the area where bones grow) need special attention. In a growing child, growth plates are open and are the weakest part of a child's skeleton.

Dear Editor, Congratulations to The Sun-Gazette and publisher Reggie Ellis for his Feb. 9, 2022, article about Visalia Unified’s terrible results in producing graduates who are eligible for freshman admission to Fresno State or UC Merced. For perspective, in 2021 only 24% of VUSD graduates met admission requirements. Statewide, over half of all graduates qualified. The district ranked 19th out of 20 districts between Clovis and Delano. More details below.

Our award-winning, internationally recognized physicians treat more than 10,000 children with scoliosis each year. In the United States, 2% to 5% of children develop scoliosis, where the spine curves to make a C shape or S shape, rather than growing in a straight line. Letter to the Editor: Good Samaritan Bill Whitlatch
Dear Editor, Generous donors and unpaid volunteers are essential parts of Visalia’s community values. The Samaritan Center (clinic) located in Northeast Visalia is a prime example as it delivers free medical care to 200 to 300 patients per month who are unable to access health care through conventional programs such as MediCal. I recently asked my friend Bill Whitlatch for a tour. The clinic provides the last possible health care solution for many and few questions are asked.
Clubfoot Causes and Treatment
Talipes equinovarus (TEV) is the medical term for clubfoot, and our pediatric orthopedic physicians are specialists in this common, treatable condition. In most cases of clubfoot, the foot appears twisted inward at the ankle. While clubfoot may be detected during pregnancy, it is visibly obvious at birth. Occurring twice as often in boys than girls, it may affect both feet (bilateral clubfoot) or just one foot. Clubfoot tends to run in families.

Letter to the editor: Steve Maaske retires from Exeter Golf Course
He moved on to play for the College of the Sequoias and was named the “Giant Golfer of the Year” after finishing in fourth place in the Valley Championships. He then received an athletic golf scholarship to attend Fresno State University. He began managing the Exeter course immediately after graduating in 1976. Thus began a lifetime of 70-hour work weeks which didn’t leave much time for socializing, but he did serve as V.P. for the board of directors for the Exeter Chamber of Commerce.
Letter to the Editor: Saluting two sisters who honor Memorial Day tradition
To the Editor, The Exeter Cemetery looked like a scene out of the Norman Rockwell paintings that captured the spirit of America on magazine covers for so many decades. Despite the Governor’s orders, over 100 volunteers had gathered to place American flags on the graves of the 2,000 veterans buried there. A few walked patiently and alone as they searched the thousands of grave markers.
Letter: VUSD board should be applauded for tough decision
The public was told this $105 million bond would provide $75 million in local funds that would be matched by $75 million from the state to build a new high school. But school finance professionals immediately knew the state would never provide that much money. Only local—not state—funds can be used to build swimming pools, sports stadiums and performance theaters. As expected, recent news reports revealed the state’s maximum contribution would only be $33 to $44 million.
Letter: Fifth high school plan surpasses public’s budget and population projections
Measure A was supported by $86,400 from a special interest group called “Visalians for Measure A, sponsored by the construction industry.” (If I was personally in the construction industry, I’m pretty certain I would have donated too since there was $200 million in potential total spending on school construction/remodeling).
