Fights where temperature/weather had influence?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by The Fighting Yoda, . There is a bunch of famous fights where high temperature may have affected the outcome... And what about low temperatures? Or maybe even rain, snow or storm or whatever...which may affect open-air fights. Maybe you know some good examples? cross_trainer and Marvelous Mauler like this. McGuigan v Cruz and Robinson v Maxim are famous examples robert ungurean, jabber74, Turnip mk3 and 3 others like this.
Definitely fixed fights?
"Undefeated Billy Collins Jr. (14-0, 11 KO) was a junior middleweight (154 lb.) prospect on his way up. Luis Resto (20-8-2, 8 KO) was a light-punching journeyman. Resto beat Collins' eyes shut and his skin purple and blue. Collins suffered a torn iris and his vision was forever blurred. Collins could no longer fight. Collins' father and trainer Collins Sr. went up to shake Resto's hand out of sportsmanship, only to be overcome with rage at how thin Resto's glove was.
Who is the most overrated heavyweight, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Tyson Fury, or others?
Relative to their resumes/accomplishments it would have to be Fury. For someone with such a thin resume whose taken so many breaks and layoffs and barely fought anyone in his era, he gets inflated to ridiculous levels. I personally have him in my top 10-15 h2h list give or take based on sheer size+skill, but I have seen quite a few people rating him quite high without really deserving it. You still have to at least prove you're the best of your era.

Mike Tyson Prime Vs Muhammad Ali 1970-1977
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by QBS, . I think this fight goes either way to be honest with Mike Tyson winning. Between 1970-1977 we had like 4 different versions of Ali... While 1970-1974 versions of Ali could defeat prime Tyson, I don't think other versions could. QBS said: ↑ Who wins Click to expand... Tyson by KO. Most limited ATG?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by roughdiamond, . What ATGs can you think of that were limited or crude yet still had astounding success? Terry McGovern looks like **** on film, but is obviously one of the greatest fighters ever. Top 20 P4P IMO. Jel and roughdiamond like this. Rocky Marciano comes to mind. He "looks" limited and crude but was still able to find a way to win against the likes of Charles, Walcott, Moore, Louis. Much more skilled than he actually looks on film.
Oleksandr Usyk vs Muhammad Ali primes
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Devon, . It’s time we have this discussion again, I can see a case for either. Is it at least close? Who wins this matchup? Ali. Usyk won't be able to deal with the quicker man. The tricks that work vs big slow heavyweights do not work well vs a man who can beat him to the punch and move quicker on his feet. Devon said: ↑ It’s time we have this discussion again, I can see a case for either. Is it at least close? Who wins this matchup? Click to expand...
Your Top Ten At 175lbs?
Greg Price99 said: ↑ Based solely on fights contested in & around LHW (e.g. where both fighters weighed under 180lbs in a non-title contests, which seems better attributed to LHW than HW to me) and completely ignoring all fights contested in other weight divisions, my top 9 are a lock for the top 10, imo, though I'm not comfortable with some of the ordering: 1. Charles 2. Greb 3. Tunney 4.
Lennox Lewis vs Riddick Bowe in 1993
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Joeywill, . How would this fight have gone had it happened in 1993 If Bowe trains for Lewis like he did for Holyfield, I envision Lewis losing in a colossal battle, possibly by knockout. Then again Lewis would train like a demon for Bowe as well but he'd go for the knockout and get exposed for being pre-prime. Might look similar to the Bruno-Lewis bout with Bowe surviving some rough moments but ultimately winning in the end.
Mike Tyson vs Muhammad Ali, 4 rounds
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by cross_trainer, . Both fighters go into this one knowing it will be a 4 rounder. Professional rules. 1980s setting. Championship fight for a major belt (which sanctioned a 4 round championship fight for unspecified reasons.) Who wins? Tyson by UD. Ali would be having to spend too much time on defense to stay vertical to score much in the first four rounds. Tyson was a fast starter as is.

Prime Foreman, Mike Tyson, Vitali, Fury, and Primo Carnera vs a male Silverback Gorilla
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MarkusFlorez99, . I've watched way to many gorilla documentaries to favor any group of men with their bare fist. George Crowcroft, Barm, MarkusFlorez99 and 1 other person like this. George Crowcroft, Barm, Boxingfan2 and 4 others like this. Individually or together, it doesn't matter - the gorilla wins. The Punchers Kid Gavilan faced
McGrain said: ↑ I did that thread a while ago about Joey Maxim and how many extraordinary punchers he met and how he probably has one of the underrated chins of all time and one of the best. A fighter who is regularly admitted to such conversations is the mighty Kid Gavilan and in my head he probably met a better array of punchers. But when I actually started to look through his record, I'm not so sure...
If you could solve a boxing mystery, what mystery would you solve?
I think there’s some room for a bit of doubt re Carnera’s KO of Sharkey but I’m not convinced 100% that it was fixed - impossible to say, - so it’s good one to put up for solving. Liston is a Pandora’s Box of mysteries begging resolution: His age, Miami, Maine, his death. His true reach (LOL) etc. Did Jersey Joe deliberately go down in the rematch v Marciano and/or did Walcott deliberately take the full 10 count when he really could have gotten up?
Could Lennox Lewis stop Oscar Bonavena?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by ThatOne, . Lennox would whup him but could he stop him? Would be very hard to do in 12 rounds, but considering how many times Bonavena was hurt and dropped against Ellis- I'd have to say, "Yes." With ease, 3-4 rounds tops Yes. He could. But conversely, he could also box more cautiously if he got caught with something solid early. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account? No, create an account now. If Muhammad Ali Never Developed Parkinson’s….
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Charles White, . Perhaps there are too many unknown variables and impossible predictions to be made here in order to answer, but if Muhammad Ali never developed Parkinson’s, and he continued to be motivated to fight for as long as he could, how long could he be a top level operator for?
Paul Gallender's book on Sonny Liston
I resent that! I doubt that as well but I think he was older than the census indicates, which contradicted the 1930 census. "CHARLES (SONNY) LISTON v was on cortisone for five days immediately prior to his ill-fated title defense on Feb. 25, according to a report released Tuesday by the Senate Antitrust and Monopoly subcommittee.
Yeah, very. According to the data, Liston has a bigger reach than Wilder. However, it's important to consider that his large fists, long fingers, and broad chest might slightly inflate the measurement. Additionally, Liston is not particularly tall (6'0)

Sugar Ray Robinson vs King Carlos Monzon (160lbs 15 rounds)
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Journeyman92, . Straight forward- fire away. SRR is the GOAT for me, but Monzon is way bigger Unlike Emile Griffith and Jose Napoles (Both smaller men than Robinson at the tail ends of their careers, the only ATG's he faced.) Monzon wouldn't have a distinct size advantage over Robinson. He definitely wouldn't be able to match his speed and overall skills. Monzon would need to pop that jab out overtime , keep Robinson at the end of it , and off balance.
Peak Rocky Marciano V Peak Mike Tyson
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by ThatOne, . Well, how do you see this gem going? I just see Marciano making the mistake of coming forward too much. But Tyson would drop him in the first round imo. If Walcott could find a bomb to drop a young Marciano, Tyson's combinations are bound to produce a knockdown in the first round. I can't see Marciano stylistically finding a way to win this. I see this fight looking a whole lot like Patterson's two fights with Liston.

Top 10 H2H Heavyweights
Sorry classic but I am going towards the big boys here. This isn't a greatness list so p4p ability is only relevant if I think it allows them to often beat much larger men. So it's have to be guys I have evidence beating much larger men. Ali Holyfield Tyson Wlad Vitali Holmes Lewis Fury Louis Bowe Not in an order. I know including fury is controversial. Again this isn't a greatness list it's a h2h against the whole field of heavyweights of all time.
How Would AJ Have Done Against Golota?
How do you see Joshua doing up Golota of the Bowe Fights? I'd put this fight at near enough 50/50. Thoughts?
Max Schmeling - Ken Norton?
For my money, In a fantasy fight, the winner has to be the one who did better in his own era. So Legacy wise it is Max. and it’s not even close. Aside from a couple of blips Schmeling was nigh on the best active heavyweight from 1929 until the loss to Joe Louis. And don’t tell me Schmeling didn’t fight in a good era. He had to beat a prime Joe Louis. Norton never had that kind of dominance. He beat Ali yes, but was it the best version of Ali?
Gene Tunney Vs Evander Holyfield
Holyfield beat the speed demon Dokes, the blisteringly fast bruiser Tyson, as well as the nimble technician Tillis. Tunney isn't bringing much Holyfield hasn't seen whether you re talking about foot or hand speed. Tunney is not knocking out Holyfield even with brass knuckles. Holyfield is plenty skilled enough and experienced enough to match ring wits with Tunney.
