Stephen Frears’ biopic of gay playwright Joe Orton is a darkly comic treat with outstanding performances from Gary Oldman as Orton and Alfred Molina as his lover-turned-killer Kenneth Halliwell. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the film, which is based on Alan Bennett’s fantastic screenplay and delivers the kind of twisted humour that made Orton’s work so popular.

Calum “Son of George” Best leads a Z-list cast in this ludicrously silly British crime thriller. Low-budget British crime movies often get a severe lashing from film critics and rightfully so. They are mostly derivate, uninventive, badly acted, poorly written and horribly directed.
Fifty years after the death of its subject, Stephen Frears’ rollicking Joe Orton biopic is returning to cinemas. Prick Up Your Ears sees Gary Oldman star as the provocative playwright who went from working class Leicester lad to the toast of London’s swinging art scene in the 1960s.
Few genres are more recognisably British than the kitchen-sink drama. Since Shelagh Delaney’s play ‘A Taste of Honey’ was adapted in 1961, the genre has become a mainstay of cinema and television in the UK. Typically comprising the impoverished residents of council estates and half-forgotten towns, with Delaney’s Salford famously becoming a symbol of postwar desolation, the kitchen-sink drama makes misery its backdrop and the working class its dramatis personae.
