Friends of mine recently bought their first home: a ground-floor flat that they wanted to renovate and make their own.

Councilmember Will Arnold’s Comments on Village Farms
Councilmember Will Arnold (Transcribed from his comments – edited for clarity). I also want to thank the applicant team and our dedicated city staff for their continued work on this. I think it’s a good thing that we’re taking the necessary time to really dig into this alternative and the EIR writ large to, and even if that means that the election won’t be when we, maybe initially I had hoped, but I think it makes sense that we be deliberate about this.

Guest Commentary: A Note of Gratitude and Reflection
As I reflect on the past eight years of service to the community that raised me, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. A journey that began in the familiar halls of the very elementary school my children now attend—where I first stood for election as a student council representative—now approaches the end, or at least the closing of a chapter. Twice, the voters of Davis have entrusted me with the profound responsibility of representing them.

The next government must commit to cutting construction's embodied carbon
All political parties should make a manifesto commitment to move to reduce embodied carbon emissions in construction within two years of starting government, Will Arnold writes If you were building a new house, and you wanted to enter the record books for “deepest foundation ever”, you could dig a hole to the centre of the Earth, and fill it with concrete. Provided there was nothing of interest directly below your construction site, there would be no regulation preventing you from doing this.
Constructing a better future
Will Arnold, Head of Climate Action at the Institution of Structural Engineers, talks about the role construction materials play in climate and ecological breakdown, and proposes the next steps for a sustainable built environment. In an era of heightened environmental awareness, the responsibility for mitigating the impacts of construction materials lies squarely on the shoulders of all those involved with their specification, production and use.

Joint Statement by the City of Davis and UC Davis
Our community has been reeling since the first of these tragic events took place on April 27. In less than a week, three stabbings that resulted in two deaths have occurred in our normally quiet and peaceful town and there is a lot of anxiety on what this means and what will be done. The safety of our residents and students is always our top priority.
Our Part Z proposals need to be a milestone on the road to net zero
The Carbon Emissions (Buildings) Bill was introduced to parliament in February 2022, mirroring the contents of the industry-proposed Part Z amendment to the building regulations. This call for embodied carbon regulation is overwhelmingly supported by industry, and the environmental audit select committee said in its report in May that such a policy was the “single most significant” action that the government could take in the built environment to reduce emissions.
Distance Swimmers Lead Bulldogs at BU
BOSTON, Mass.- The Bryant swimming and diving teams each dropped their final dual meet of the season, falling to Boston University on Saturday. The men's team fell 173-124, while the women dropped to the Terriers by a score of 198-102. Distance swimmers led the way for the Bulldogs, with Leo Luna, Makayla Pearce, and Natalia Kuipers combining to sweep the 500 and 1000 freestyles.

Could a Grade III listing for buildings halt the UK’s tide of demolition?
Seventy-five years ago, in the post-war period of rebuilding, the UK started to ‘list’ and protect buildings deemed to be of particular architectural significance.
To drive down carbon emissions on every project, we need to change the Building Regs
The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report opens with the stark message: ‘It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land.’ It is the latest in a series of scientific statements of concern, adding to the warnings of others that predict global food shortages, the potential collapse of the Gulf Stream, and the loss of British seaside towns by 2050.
We need a Part Z to regulate embodied carbon
It’s time to tackle carbon emissions from construction, which have failed to fall alongside operational carbon. Will Arnoldmakes the case for embodied carbon regulation Part Z is a proof-of-concept amendment to the Building Regulations drawn up by a small team of built environment sustainability specialists which covers the assessment, reporting and limiting of embodied carbon. But why embodied carbon? And why now? Buildings and construction form a substantial portion of UK carbon emissions.
Commentary: Some thoughts on parking
By Will Arnold Special to The Enterprise This Tuesday, my City Council colleagues will discuss, and potentially take action, regarding how and where we park our cars in Downtown Davis. By virtue of my wife and I owning a business downtown, Mother & Baby Source, I am required to recuse myself from the council decision on this issue. But recusal from official duties does not waive one’s right to speech, and I feel I ought to share some thoughts on the subject.
Measure L helps meet critical need
Providing our seniors with housing options specifically designed for a changing lifestyle will allow Davis to retain its baby boomers and their valuable contributions to our community. Yolo County has 35,000 Baby Boomers at or nearing retirement age. Approximately 25 percent of Davis’s homes are owned by this generation, many of whom live in houses larger than necessary or desired.
