Echoing a bit of what Kevin just wrote about, major championships and especially The Open, have a tendency of exposing poor strikes far more frequently than a normal stop. This morning especially, the conditions have the guys FLUMMOXED.
The Pin Positions That Define Augusta National
Few courses in professional golf are as demanding as Augusta National. With severe slopes on and around all 18 of its green complexes, the Masters host conducts a thorough examination of approach play for the best players in the world every April. But it is not the slopes themselves that separate the contenders from the pretenders. Players and fans alike are at least somewhat familiar with the greens of the Masters.
2025 Masters Preview: Players, Storylines to Watch at Augusta National
The Fried Egg Golf preview of the 2025 Masters has a little something for everyone to get you ready for the first major of the year. By Will Knights The 89th Masters Tournament is upon us. Last year, Scottie Scheffler slipped into his second green jacket to jumpstart a historic seven-win season that drew comparisons to Tiger Woods. Xander Schauffele got the major monkey off his back at the 2024 PGA Championship before adding a second in quick succession at the Open Championship.
2025 Creator Classic at TPC Sawgrass: Like and Subscribe
Neatly shaven with trousers cuffed just above his ankles, he stands tall on an island where champions are crowned, carefully wielding his extended mallet as ripples of watery fates pass by and onlookers oversee his every move with smartphones at the ready. For hours, nothing but Hollywood flashed across his face. Now, Grant Horvat towers over an opportunity. Ten experienced men and women entered the caldron, yet only he has a chance at glory.
Tour Guide: On the Ground at Riviera
Welcome back to Tour Guide, a Club TFE weekly preview, review, and ramble around the pro golf scene featuring some of the more insightful voices observing said scene. This week we have boots on the ground at the Genesis Invitational (L.A. Open, as it might still be for some of you), and plenty of on-site coverage from the Fried Egg team. By Joseph LaMagna I’m writing this on Wednesday, my first day seeing Riviera Country Club in the flesh.
2024 PGA Championship Preview
A whiparound preview of all the angles we're tracking at this week's PGA Championship We covered Rory, Scottie, Brooks, and Valhalla in deeper detail for Wednesday’s Fried Egg Golf newsletter to get you set for the PGA Championship, but there’s so much more to watch for this week! To cover more of the bases, we convened the Fried Egg crew to dive into an array of players and storylines we’re keeping our eyes on this week in Louisville.
Tour Guide: Under One Umbrella
The Tour heads to Bay Hill for a tournament that’s both a signature event in terms of new corporate speak and a signature event in terms of being one of the longstanding historical stops on the calendar. By Joseph LaMagna For some of you, Bay Hill is probably a highly anticipated week. For anyone who takes exception to some of its architectural shortcomings, though, this may be a week that inspires less enthusiasm. I’m writing this from Orlando after walking nine holes on Tuesday afternoon.
Tour Guide: Talking Twin Cities
Welcome to this week’s edition of Tour Guide! The week after a major always feels a bit like a hangover on the PGA Tour, and this week’s event in Minnesota certainly doesn’t break that particular trend. But we also get the Senior Open at Carnoustie, which at the very least is another chance to see both links golf on television AND some players getting blown out to sea. Let’s dive in! By Joseph LaMagna There’s no sugarcoating it: the 3M Open stinks.
Sunday Weight - Fried Egg Golf
Heavy is the crown that lies ahead on U.S. Open Sunday There are only four Sundays a year. That has to be a maddening truth for the highest level tour pro who has spent his whole life working on a game that he does better than 99.9 percent of other humans. The world’s best golfers get approximately 80 hours of major championship golf in a single year, and only four major Sundays to actually win a trophy.
2025 Masters First Round Recap, Leaderboard, and Notes
By Joseph LaMagna For the fifth time in his Masters career, Justin Rose is the leader in the clubhouse after 18 holes. As much (deserved) talk as there will be of Rose’s track record at Augusta National, his record in all major championships shouldn’t be overlooked. Rose has 14 top 10s in majors since 2015, more than any other player but four, and he’s recorded at least one top 10 every year since 2015 (except 2022).
Tiger Woods Returns Limited But Not Lost at the Masters
Tiger Woods amazed and entertained yet again at Augusta National. Hampered and hobbled by a right-leg injury suffered during a violent car crash in February 2021, the 15-time major champion shot a first-round 71. He finds himself squarely in the mix through 18 holes, a position he knows well at the Masters. No one knew what to expect out of Woods this week given that he is still recovering from a life-threatening accident.
Tour Guide: What, If Anything, Is Interesting About Torrey Pines?
Welcome to the first edition of Tour Guide, a (tentatively named) Club TFE feature that will mostly focus on professional golf with some preview-y insights and review-y humor. It’s a free flowing notebook featuring some of the smarter observers of the pro game that will preview what lies ahead, look back at recent events, and remember tournaments of old. This week, it’s all about the annual PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines.
Recapping the First Round of the 2024 U.S. Open
Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy sit tied atop the U.S. Open leaderboard but a lot happened on Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2. By Will Knights In the history of the Official World Golf Ranking, only three players have spent more weeks in the top 10 without a major championship victory than Patrick Cantlay. The power tool-toting PAC power player sits tied atop the U.S. Open leaderboard after a nearly flawless opening-round 65. It’s not surprising that Cantlay is in the mix early on.
2025 PGA Championship First Round Leaderboard, Updates
By Will Knights If you just got off a long day of work, saw this major championship leaderboard and thought you were hallucinating, you’re not the only one. so does the leaderboard — Brendan Porath (@BrendanPorath) May 15, 2025 A whopping three of the top 30 players in the Data Golf Ranking — Keegan Bradley, Tyrrell Hatton, and Aaron Rai — are in the top 19 on the leaderboard. But please, don’t panic. Don’t run to Twitter/X and complain.
Previewing the 2024 U.S. Women's Open
It’s time for the biggest event in women’s golf: the U.S. Women’s Open. We previewed the big storyline, offered some key names to watch, and highlighted some course notes to watch. It promises to be a great week at Lancaster, assuming you’re up for navigating the Peacock-USA-NBC gauntlet.
Club TFE Tour Guide: The Pros of Jack's Place
Welcome to Club TFE’s Tour Guide, where we tackle both the serious and unserious from the world of pro golf on a weekly basis. There’s a major on the horizon, but first we have a stalwart PGA Tour stop in Ohio to discuss, which we’ll try to do without poking the Golden Bear.
Tour Guide: Drunk in Phoenix
Welcome back to Tour Guide, a Club TFE weekly preview, review, and ramble around the pro golf scene featuring some of the more insightful voices observing said scene. This week we have the Phoenix Open on tap (that’s a drinking term). Let’s get to it. By Joseph LaMagna Welcome to Phoenix Open week! Unquestionably, this is one of the most electric non-major championship weeks on the PGA Tour schedule.
Tour Guide: The Pros of Jack's Place
Welcome to Club TFE’s Tour Guide, where we tackle both the serious and unserious from the world of pro golf on a weekly basis. There’s a major on the horizon, but first we have a stalwart PGA Tour stop in Ohio to discuss, which we’ll try to do without poking the Golden Bear. By Joseph LaMagna Muirfield Village Golf Club is one of the best tests on the professional golf schedule.
Tour Guide: The Pirate Goes to Mexico
Welcome back to Tour Guide, a Club TFE weekly preview, review, and ramble around the pro golf scene. This week we try to find some positives about the Mexico Open venue, examine a telling conversation between player and caddie, and uncover some personal history on a former Mexico Open winner. By Joseph LaMagna There are plenty of weak-field PGA Tour events where I still enjoy watching golf shots thanks to a compelling venue.
Tour Guide: Teeth of the Snake
Welcome to Tampa, land of knockoff theme parks, humidity, and statistically speaking at least a few of your grandparents. By Joseph LaMagna This week, the PGA Tour heads to the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook. When I talk about golf courses on the PGA Tour that I’m not particularly fond of, the three courses I probably get the most pushback on are Bay Hill, Quail Hollow, and Copperhead. I appreciate some things about Copperhead, it’s just that overall I find it to be pretty bland.
Recapping the Second Round of the 2024 Masters
Tiger’s record breaking performance was the main story of the second round, but there was a lot to take away from Friday. By Will Knights If you were to create a day in which Bryson DeChambeau could thrive, Friday was not it. The high speed, high-ball flight #Crusher is not built to thrive in high winds. He’s much better suited for the dome-like conditions of Chris Como’s living room, where he tries to reach 200-mph ball speed.
2025 Masters Second Round Recap, Leaderboard, and Notes
The Fried Egg Golf staff recaps a busy second day of play at the 2025 Masters, where the field of 95 players has been cut down to 53. By Garrett Morrison We’ve got ourselves a tournament. Following a Thursday 65 with a workmanlike 71 on Friday at the Masters, Justin Rose held onto the lead but let a bunch of thoroughbreds back into the race. Corey Conners, Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry, and Matt McCarty are all within three strokes.
Tour Guide: Non-Nelly Storylines at the Chevron
You would think that once the Masters ends that the golf world would slow down. Instead, we have another major, a signature event, and Scottie Scheffler wrap-up to somehow fit into a single Tour Guide. We figured out how to do it, but what would a Club TFE introduction paragraph be without a little setup and complaining?
Tour Guide: Entering Golf's Stadium
It’s a big week for the PGA Tour, which has pretty much the entire golf spotlight, give or take your appetite for watching an Asian Tour event filled with LIV players chasing OWGR points. What should you expect when you tune in for the Players at TPC Sawgrass? A lot of variety and plenty of big numbers. By Joseph LaMagna Welcome to Players Championship week, one of the best weeks of the year! TPC Sawgrass is my favorite non-major championship golf course on the PGA Tour schedule.
2025 Masters Third Round Recap, Leaderboard, and Notes
The Fried Egg Golf staff recaps Moving Day at the 2025 Masters and previews the heavyweight bout in the final pairing. By Joseph LaMagna The moment has arrived: Rory McIlroy’s best chance to win a major championship in over a decade. Entering Sunday, the four-time major winner holds a two-stroke lead over Bryson DeChambeau, who joins McIlroy in the final pairing.
Best U.S. Open Qualifying Stories from Golf's Longest Day
And a Jack Nicklaus quote about Scottie Scheffler that's made the rounds Golf’s Longest Day earned its title as Monday’s final qualifying for the U.S. Open at Oakmont spilled over into Tuesday. Ten sites across the U.S. and Canada held 36-hole qualifiers to decide 47 open spots in the field at Oakmont. Here are some of the highlights: It’s rare when amateurs get top billing, but there were too many good notes from Monday and Tuesday’s action to lead with the professionals.
Tour Guide: Memorial Park Changes
Club TFE’s Tour Guide takes a trip to Houston this week for some reporting on how changes to the 17th at Memorial Park might not work exactly as intended. Plus thoughts on Memorial Park as a tournament venue, why Scottie Scheffler (shocker) is a horse for this course, and a look back at an incredible holed pitch shot from the Valspar.
Tour Guide: Low Point for the Highlands
Welcome to the third week in a row with either a PGA Tour signature event or a major championship. That’s a lot! The Travelers Championship offers us a chance to dive into changes at TPC River Highlands, which are probably not going to do much to strengthen the course’s defenses. Plus a breakdown of Bryson’s bunker shot and a look back to the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA at Sahalee, in honor of this week’s edition.
Analyzing the PGA Tour, Saudi PIF merger agreement
Leaks are back. Late on Monday night, the golfing public got its first look at the five-page framework agreement signed by the PGA Tour and the PIF that is set to fundamentally alter the structure of men’s professional golf. The Athletic first reported the document with many other outlets following up as well. The document reveal was, for the most part, underwhelming. Everything we had previously heard was in the deal was, in fact, in the deal. Missing details were still missing.
We Have Initiated a Discussion
President Trump invited PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, Tiger Woods, and Adam Scott to the White House on Thursday. The discussion focused on the reunification of men’s golf and the proposed deal between the Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which bankrolls the Tour’s rival, LIV Golf. Yasir Al-Rumayyan, chairman of both the PIF and LIV, was reportedly in attendance. News of the 12 p.m. ET meeting began to circulate in the morning.
Tour Guide: John Deere Diving
Welcome to this week’s edition of Tour Guide! Below you’ll find some analysis on former John Deere champ Jordan Spieth’s precarious points situation, and what that might mean for how the PGA Tour operates going forward. Plus a look back at a great shot from the Rocket Mortgage Classic as well as a trip down memory lane to a John Deere moment that ended up mattering a great deal at the Ryder Cup.
Newsletter: Masters Thursday Recap
It was a hot and sweaty day at Augusta National, but that didn’t stop players from going low during the first round of the 2023 Masters Tournament. More than a dozen players shot 68 or better on Thursday, but nobody went lower than the 65s shot by Viktor Hovland, Jon Rahm, and Brooks Koepka. Masters Leaderboard Top of the board By Will Knights It’s not uncommon for mid-tier players to shoot the lights out and jump out to an 18-hole lead at a major before falling back over the weekend.
2025 PGA Championship Second Round Leaderboard, Updates
What Are the Odds? – Jhonattan Vegas, the 36-hole leader at eight under, has four PGA Tour wins under his belt and is looking to claim his first major championship this weekend. If he’s successful, it will be the second time he has won an event despite entering in awful form. When Vegas defended his 2017 RBC Canadian Open title, he had missed the cut in eight of his prior 10 starts, including five in a row.
The Tiny Pebble Beach Pro Am Test on the PGA Tour
Welcome back to Tour Guide, our new Club TFE feature on professional golf. Let’s take a drive over to the Monterey Peninsula, shall we? By Joseph LaMagna Welcome to Pebble Beach week! A bunch of the best players in the world congregate along the Pacific Ocean for what projects to be a…chaotic week of golf. The combination of Pebble Beach’s dimensions and a multi-course format often produces funky leaderboards.
Tour Guide: Wet and Wild in West Palm
The Florida Swing may not have the cache it once did, but it still has the Bear Trap, and that’s really all that matters at the end of the day. By Joseph LaMagna Welcome to Cognizant Classic week, historically known as the Honda. When I discuss PGA National publicly, I tend to get some mild backlash when I speak less than favorably about it. People seemingly appreciate the difficulty of the golf course, which often plays over par despite not being too lengthy.
Tour Guide: Sprayers Need Not Apply
If you came to the Club TFE Tour Guide expecting a bashing of TPC San Antonio, you’re in for a surprise. At least one of us is going to ask you to give the Valero Texas Open a real chance! By Joseph LaMagna We made it. It’s finally a major championship week. Ok, fine. The Valero Texas Open is very far from being a major championship, but this is a damn good tournament, one that I’ve always felt deserves more respect.

Tour Guide: Team Golf SZN
Apologies for the slight delay in the Tour Guide this week, although we’re not exactly sure how many people are counting down to the Zurich Classic anyway. That said, we have some fun stuff in store. In addition to Joseph and Will’s pieces here, we’d highly recommend listening to Wednesday’s Shotgun Start, which includes Brendan’s lookback to 1983 and how the modern structure of the PGA Tour came to be.
2024 Masters Odds and Ends
Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, and Augusta National thoughts after the 2024 Masters Scottie Scheffler and Ludvig Åberg were the main stories on Sunday, but there are a couple other odds and ends to run through from the 2024 Masters. By Will Knights There is no simulating the pressure you feel in a major championship. No one knows that better than Max Homa, who recorded his best finish in a major with a T-3.
2025 Masters Final Round Recap, Leaderboard, and Notes
The Fried Egg Golf staff recaps the final round of the 2025 Masters, one of the more thrilling days of major championship play in years. By Joseph LaMagna Resilience. It’s the word that’s been used repeatedly to define Rory McIlroy’s quest to win the Masters, and rightfully so. It doesn’t just capture his pursuit of one of golf’s rarest prizes; it captures the essence of his long, illustrious career.
2025 PGA Tour Schedule release: Dates, times, and courses
The PGA Tour released its full 2025 schedule on Wednesday. Largely an exercise in copying and pasting, the 2025 schedule features a very recognizable structure, a few minor date swaps, and a timeline that finishes up before the NFL season gets underway. Brendan Porath, Joseph LaMagna, and Will Knights all have longer takes below.
2028 Olympics to feature mixed-team golf
Looking forward to mixed-team golf at the 2028 Olympics and sharing a final thought on Rory McIlroy By Meg Adkins A high-stakes mixed-team event with the best players in the world is finally happening. Are Bryson’s Bespoke Irons a Sign of Things to Come for Equipment Testing?
In the days leading up to the 2024 Masters, the golf world learned that one of the game’s most exotic minds had cooked up his latest great idea. Approved by the USGA on Monday of tournament week, Bryson DeChambeau put into play a set of irons with faces, the same technology that helps correct off-center hits in drivers and metal woods. The irons were produced by manufacturer Avoda via 3D printer, cost $10,000, and were the only set in existence.
2024 PGA Championship Preview: Talking Through Valhalla
T’was the night before the PGA Championship, and things feel a bit tepid. To get a sense of why the 2024 PGA seems to be lacking some pop, Matt Rouches and I sat down to discuss Valhalla the golf course and why, so far at least, this year’s event isn’t hitting like other majors. Enjoy. Will: Matt, we’re one day away from the PGA Championship, and while I’m excited for some of the player storylines, I can’t help but feel apathetic about the golf course. Am I being too negative in regards to Valhalla?
2024 PGA Championship Preview: Key Players, Storylines, and More
We covered Rory, Scottie, Brooks, and Valhalla in deep detail for Wednesday’s Fried Egg Golf newsletter to get you set for the PGA Championship, but there’s so much more to watch for this week! To cover more of the bases, we convened the Fried Egg crew to dive into an array of players and storylines we’re keeping our eyes on this week in Louisville. By Joseph LaMagna Entering this week, the lack of buzz around Jon Rahm is somehow both surprising and understandable.
Bryson DeChambeau Accidentally Films a Pro-Rollback Video
Ever since Bryson DeChambeau made the decision to play for LIV Golf, he’s largely been able to avoid any negative spotlight. There is very little press with LIV, and what is done has to be approved by the league. That has helped the formerly thick one largely avoid any unwanted attention and, more importantly for those of us in the content business, removed his highly entertaining brain from the greater golf consciousness. That run has ended.
Will's Official Weekly Golf Ranking, Vol. 2024.2
We had a bit of a false start to Will’s Official Weekly golf ranking this year. There are a variety of reasons for that, some of which we’ll get into below. The main point is that I know *many* of you set your clocks by WOWgr ,and I’m very sorry for the last month of darkness. Now, let’s find our center. New to WOWgr? Here are the guidelines WOWgr Vol.
Qualifying Crapshoot
Kalle Samooja, Jinchiro Kozuma, and Kieran Vincent earned spots on the LIV Golf circuit this weekend after getting through LIV’s qualifying event in Abu Dhabi. All three players will be drafted onto LIV rosters this winter and have status on the tour for 2024. Unless you are the biggest golf junkie on the planet (or you’ve written the Fried Egg Golf newsletter for the last five years), I wouldn’t expect you to know those names.
What to Watch at Pebble Beach for the 2023 U.S. Women's Open
As golf fans, we’ve seen thousands of televised shots hit by professional golfers at Pebble Beach. Just not by professional women. The 2023 U.S. Women’s Open highlights a new era of venues for the most prestigious women’s major championship, one in which the host sites are as regarded as the men’s venues.
