Preaching as Protest against the Apophatic Silencing of God’s People
1. Introduction: Christian Preaching as Public Speech Christian public speech, otherwise known as preaching, has always been at the heart of the Christian faith. Preaching is undertaken in the conviction that it is the nature of the God whom Christians and Jews worship to self-present through communication. God is Triune—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The three persons of the Trinity are eternally in conversation with one another and with creation.
Meant for Mission
By Will Willimon I was in a meeting and we were talking about the need for a new church plant in our area. It had been over a decade since we had a new church start. The proposal to plant a new congregation had encountered opposition. “What are we doing starting a new church when all of our congregations are dwindling?” asked one person.
He Defeated Death
By Will Willimon The last time I preached at Washington National Cathedral, after service a tourist groused, “Your sermon was so depressing! I hope you’re never invited back.” Well, I’m back. This time I so want to be positive, upbeat. But, these days have been, well, a depressing dialogue with Death. “We’re in control!” we said. “Sure, the White House is clueless, but soon the government may get its act together.

Who Lynched Willie Earle? Preaching to Confront Racism
Pastors and leaders long to speak an effective biblical word into the contemporary social crisis of racial violence and black pain.
What ‘The Prophetic Imagination’ Has Meant to Me
Five Christian leaders on the influence of Walter Brueggemann’s classic book in their life and ministry. In 1978, Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann published his classic work on the biblical prophets, The Prophetic Imagination. Since then, the book has inspired inspired hundreds of scholars, pastors, and activists to rethink what it means to be a prophetic in their own contexts, writes Kenyatta Gilbert in the January 2018 issue of Sojourners.

My prayer on Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Lord, forgive us the sin of patience
That day, a courageous community activist, Rosa Parks, had been forced off a city bus and jailed. That night, a hurt, angry crowd of people gathered at Holt Street to discuss the situation. Speakers noted that what happened that day was simply the way things were done in Montgomery. Racial segregation and white supremacy controlled every aspect of Alabama life. What could anybody do with a man like Big Jim Folsom in charge of the state?

Fear of the Other: Sermon by Will Willimon
Bishop Will Willimon, author of Fear of the Other, was our guest preacher the Sunday after Trumpocalypse. His text was Romans 5. Not only is the book dedicated to Donald Trump (…without whose xenophobia ‘I wouldn’t have been asked to write this book.’) it’s an incredibly timely book for those who are repulsed by Trump and how we’re to love the ungodly which surely includes even Donald Trump. Listen to it. Follow @cmsvoteup
Why Christians and politics should mix
Bishop Willimon,I liked you when you were preacher at Duke Chapel. But now that you have gotten political, you are an embarrassment. Shame on you for your work against HB2! – A concerned ChristianI’m in the middle of grading papers, and so have little time to respond to individual emails. But here is how I would generally answer such a note: Dear concerned Christian:I have never met Gov. Pat McCrory, though I did see him eating a halftime hotdog at the Duke-Carolina basketball game.
Interview with Will Willimon
Oily Evangelicals, mockery of Ted Cruz, and coitus jokes- and people accuse me of being off-color. Bishop Will Willimon dishes all this and more as he discusses his new book, Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love. We’d love for you to give us 4 Stars and a good review there in the iTunes store. It’ll make it more likely more strangers and pilgrims will happen upon our meager podcast. ‘Like’ our Facebook Page too. You can find it here.
We Should Fear God More than the Other
Several years ago the church I serve opened the doors of its youth wing to welcome the members of a local mosque. Their own facility was undergoing construction and they needed a place to offer their Friday Jummah prayers.
Crackers & Grape Juice
A while back I hatched the idea to begin a sort of podcasting collective with my friends Teer Hardy and Morgan Guyton. Like the United Methodist Church, in which we all minister, there’s a range of beliefs and opinions between us. I tried to come up with a name for the podcast, something specifically Methodist but appropriately catchy and memorable.
Are You Worshiping a Fake Jesus?
You know the old saw: God created humans in his own image, and we have spent ages returning the favor. How ironic that Jesus, who came to transform us, has so many followers intent on remaking him into a more congenial idol. At first we dressed him in a royal robe and placed a crown upon his head—before nailing him to a cross. Today we continue to downgrade the original Jesus into someone less threatening and demanding.
The Importance of Daydreaming
Last year’s great book was Daniel Goleman’s Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence. In it, Goleman shows how keeping your eye on the ball, focusing your undisciplined mind on the tasks at hand, is the key to success in life. Focus enables us to solve problems, to achieve goals. But this is my encomium to the glory of a mind adrift. Your best thinking occurs when your mind wanders. Cognitive scientists say you have an incorrigibly distracted mind. The wandering mind is our brain’s default mode.
