Welcome to the New A Wolf Among Wolves
Welcome back. When A Wolf Among Wolves started, I was at Minnesota State University — still a sport management major — trying to figure out how to best build around Al Jefferson and Kevin Love when I inevitably become the new Timberwolves GM after I graduate. Over the next few years, I changed my major and graduated with a journalism degree. I had moved back to the Twin Cities, was writing for a local newspaper and a different Timberwolves blog. Meanwhile, AWAW was had grown.
2018 AWAW Trade Deadline Roundtable: Swindling Thibs and Other Predictions
The NBA trade deadline looms – it’s Thursday, February 8th, at 2:00 PM Central, to be exact. In honor of one of the zaniest times of the year, the gang got together for a deadline roundtable – enjoy. Dr. Lawyer IndianChief (Dr. LIC): To answer the question, they should be satisfied. There is this myth about Thibs that he is impatient and always in win-now mode (including reports that other front office’s try to swindle him in trades because of this proclivity).
" Goodbye, Ricky
26 months ago, in the spring of 2015, the Minnesota Timberwolves were on their way to a 16-66 record, worst in the NBA. The February acquisition of Kevin Garnett rejuvenated the fan base, but after playing 5 of the team’s first 8 games, KG’s knees flared up and he was shut down for the year. Shabazz Muhammad suffered a season-ending injury on February 20th. Nikola Pekovic followed on March 11th. Kevin Martin injured his hamstring in a March 22nd home loss to Charlotte and missed two weeks.
Hoping for a (positive) plot twist for Kevin Love
Whether the Warriors win tonight or Sunday, or even if the Cavs pull off an historic comeback, pondering Kevin Love’s future appears to be high on everyone’s to-do list. 2015-16 Roster Review: Tyus Jones
After taking Karl-Anthony Towns first overall, the Minnesota Timberwolves completed their 2015 draft night by trading two second-round picks (31 and 36) for the rights to Apple Valley’s own Tyus Jones, who was selected 24th by the Cleveland Cavaliers. The move to acquire Jones, who’d led Duke to a National Championship in his lone collegiate campaign, was met with much fanfare, some measured, some incredibly stupid. Incredibly, incredibly stupid.
2015-16 Roster Review: Nikola Pekovic
If this was the end for Nikola Pekovic, I will remember him for so much, both on the court and off of it. I will remember a man who grew from a baby-faced foul machine into a bearded behemoth with ballet footwork and a throwback game in the low post, the guy who abused smaller centers and danced around taller ones. I’ll remember that 15 game stretch during the 2013-14 season where he went for 22 and 10 per night on 56% shooting.
AWAW Roundtable: Coaching search breakdown, Korn Ferry jokes
Wednesday, the Wolves parted ways with GM Milt Newton and interim head coach Sam Mitchell, while announcing that a search firm (Korn Ferry) would spearhead the effort to find a replacement (coach/President of Basketball Operations combo) or replacements (one coach, one P.O.B.O.). Given Glen Taylor’s history of sticking with familiar people, how shocked are you at these developments? Steve: It’s certainly very un-Wolves-like, which is, frankly, encouraging.
It’s Time, Glen.
What type of person buys an NBA team? The kind of person who can come up with tens of millions of dollars on short notice. By the spring of 1994, suitors were lining up to see Marv Wolfenson and Harvey Ratner, co-owners of the 5-year-old Minnesota Timberwolves. Thanks to mismanagement and poor decision-making, the pair couldn’t make mortgage payments on the Target Center, and they needed a way out.
ESPN’s Marc Stein: “Rising belief” Sam Mitchell will not return to Wolves’ bench
The Wolves play game 82 at home tonight against the New Orleans Pelicans, and the rest of the league will finish their schedules as well, if haven’t already done so. It’s an exciting time to be a basketball fan, especially if your team is one of the 16 who get to participate in the NBA playoffs. It is not such an exciting time to be a fan of the other 14 teams, and even less so for their coaches, some of whom will find out they are out of a job sometime in the next 12-to-72 hours.
Wolves 124, Some Schmucks From Oakland 117: Trash Talk
I typically try to recap games from detached, but hopefully not disinterested, point of view.
AWAW Roundtable: On Bjelica, Sam Mitchell, and other assorted worries about the future
Zach: Ricky Rubio. I don’t think the Rubio trade situation with Milwaukee is necessarily a bad thing. It shows the value they put on Rubio (depending on which version of the story you believe happened in terms of which team offered the other and how far it went), and it shows the value another team puts on the player the Wolves allegedly said it would take to get the deal done.
Reports: Wolves sign Greg Smith to ten day contract, reach buy out agreement with Kevin Martin
The Minnesota Timberwolves were quiet at the trade deadline, but they’ve been very busy in the week and half since it passed. Last Thursday, they reached a buyout agreement with Andre Miller and subsequently waived him; Tuesday, the ol’ professor signed a deal to join the San Antonio Spurs for the rest of the season. (Hot take: good for him.
D-League, overseas frontcourt targets for the Wolves
Since Thursday’s waiving of Andre Miller, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ roster has sat at 14 players. As of Saturday, the Wolves had yet to finalize a rumored buyout with Kevin Martin – but if it is completed (as expected) by the Monday deadline, it’ll leave the team with yet another roster spot to fill.
LaVine, Towns shine at All-Star Weekend
For the second consecutive season, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ young talent dominated the Friday and Saturday events of All-Star Weekend. It began Friday night with the Rising Stars game.
Lakers 119, Timberwolves 115: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’m going to keep this short, because Minneapolis has been hit hard by a damn blizzard and I have to get up in five damn hours to snowblow the driveway for a second time so I can make it to work tomorrow. The Wolves lost to the Lakers. Kobe Bryant scored 38 points, knocked down 7 threes and 11 free throws, and hit some very big shots down the stretch.
Where did all the threes go? Checking Sam’s claims about his Raptor days
A few weeks ago, MinnPost’s Britt Robson published a conversation (broken into two parts, which you can find here and here) with Timberwolves interim head coach Sam Mitchell. As is often the case with Robson’s work, the contents were illuminating for anyone hoping to gain insight to the team. Britt has covered the Wolves in some capacity for more than two decades, and is completely unafraid to ask tough questions.
Old Heads, Fresh Enthusiasm
The day Karl-Anthony Towns was born, 19-year-old Kevin Garnett played in his sixth NBA game, putting up 19 points and 8 rebounds in a 105-96 home loss to the San Antonio Spurs. It featured David Robinson, Sean Elliott, Vinny Del Negro, and Doc Rivers in the visiting black uniforms, and “Googs,” J.R. Rider, Doug West, Terry Porter and Sam Mitchell in the home whites.
Pistons 115, Timberwolves 90: Flows and Flavors
Perhaps it’s just the stubborn contrarian in me talking, but part of me hopes the Timberwolves don’t change a damn thing about their offense and turn into a juggernaut anyway.
A SportVu deep dive into the Timberwolves’ young season
Over the past couple of seasons, NBA.com has made Synergy Sports data more and more available in ever-increasing detail. While the numbers certainly shouldn’t be taken as Gospel, and subjective factors must always be kept in mind, it can be quite informative to jump into the advanced statistics in an attempt to learn a little more about player and team tendencies. With that in mind, please enjoy what I’ve put together below. Rankings and statistics were current as of Friday, November 20th.
Ontology and Possibility: On the nature of Zach LaVine’s position
A week and a half into the season, the Wolves are 3-2, and could easily be 4-1 if a few controversial calls in the final minute of last week’s Blazers game had gone the other way. Things are mostly good; everyone is still healthy (save Nikola Pekovic, of course, who is still recovering from achilles surgery), Karl-Anthony Towns looks like the real deal, the teams is getting to the line at a positively absurd rate, and their crunch-time defense has been especially stout.
Blazers 106, Timberwolves 101: The normal thing to do
If this were a normal game recap, I’d talk about the final minute, about Andrew Wiggins’ basket interference with 54 seconds to go being reviewed and upheld, the “inadvertent whistle” call with 29 seconds to go that nearly bailed Portland out of a shot clock violation, the jump ball foul called on Karl-Anthony Towns with 12 ticks left, and the non-call on Kevin Martin’s three point attempt that led to an Allen Crabbe layup and the Wolves’ fate being sealed.
Timberwolves 68 (I think), Other Timberwolves 54 (ish): A Scrimmage Recap
Monday night, the Minnesota Timberwolves held a free intrasquad scrimmage at the Target Center. They split into two sides, and by the time the dust settled, the squad featuring Tyus Jones, Zach LaVine, Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns and Nemanja Bjelica (in black uniforms) trounced the Kevin Martin, Andre Miller, Gorgui Dieng, Shabazz Muhammad and Tayshaun Prince-led white team by a score of 68 or so to like around 54 I think.
