Building your business’ value: what buyers really want
Many business owners assume that if revenue is growing, profits are healthy and customers are happy, the business should be attractive when the time comes to sell. The reality is not as simple. In the current environment, buyers are increasingly looking beyond current earnings to understand what sits behind current financial performance. They want confidence that a business can sustain earnings, manage risk and continue to grow, even if market conditions change.
Proposed trust tax changes: more detail, more choices and significant decisions ahead
The Government has released the first tranche of exposure draft legislation for its proposed 30 per cent minimum tax on discretionary trusts. The new details provide affected families and businesses with a clearer picture of how the reforms may operate, including a new election that could allow some trusts to remain outside the minimum tax regime. However, this additional option brings greater complexity, long-term restrictions and potentially severe consequences if the election is revoked.

The ripple effects of financial distress
Skip to content Article The ripple effects of financial distress 31 August 2026 | Minutes to read: 3 Every business watches its own performance closely, but most do not consider how much of that is riding on someone else. Businesses sometimes depend on a handful of customers and suppliers that matter more than the rest, and the health of those relationships shapes your position more than the balance sheet tends to show.
From cost squeeze to tax shock: business confidence under pressure
A Word from William Buck: By Adrian Chugg, Managing Partner, William Buck The June 2026 quarter Survey of Business Expectations shows some relief after a very weak March quarter, but no one should confuse a bounce from a very low base with strength when it comes to business confidence. Cost of doing business remains the top concern, followed by profitability, government policies and compliance plus broader economic factors.
3 scenarios your business should be ready for Original
Most business owners are acutely aware of the pressures in the current environment. Cost inflation, shifting demand and tighter cash cycles are widely understood. What is less clear is how to translate those pressures into a small number of scenarios that genuinely guide decisions. Without structure, planning conversations tend to remain broad. Risks are acknowledged, but actions are not always defined.
Supply chain resilience is no longer optional
For many business owners, supply chain disruption used to be something you managed at the edges. A late shipment, a supplier delay, a temporary cost increase. Annoying, but manageable. That mindset no longer reflects reality. The geopolitical environment has shifted in a way that makes disruption more frequent, more persistent and more commercially damaging.
Why disciplined cash flow monitoring matters for owner managed businesses
Most cash flow problems we see in owner managed businesses have been visible for some time before they become urgent. The warning signs are usually there, but they sit below the surface and are easy to ignore while trading conditions feel acceptable. Often, we see cash reviewed episodically. Cash only becomes a priority once limits are tested, payments are delayed or funding conversations turn defensive. At that point, choices are constrained and time is no longer on the business’s side.
