Stepwise Risk Outlook: What We're Watching Today, September 20, 2024
The Fed's decision to unwind its most recent economic tightening cycle is expected to be felt around the world. Our Take: Central banks around the world have been waiting to see the size of the rate cut, as it signals the latest US assessment on taming inflation and risks of recession. The jumbo cut will push more liquidity into the market and reduce pressure on other central banks to maintain higher rates.

Global: Russia producing long-range attack drones with Chinese engines Reuters reported that Russia is now producing long-range drones using Chinese engines and parts, citing European intelligence sources. Our Take: Since the start of the Russian further invasion of Ukraine, the US government has warned China against equipping Russia's military, threatening sanctions should Beijing cross this redline.
Under Russian Sanctions? Do Not Discount The Risks
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the geopolitical landscape has shifted dramatically. Among the most prominent consequences has been the sanctions imposed by Western countries against Moscow targeting its economy, key individuals, and businesses.

Fifth Circuit Bombshell On SEC ALJs Raises Questions About DEA ALJs
In a decision that likely will reverberate throughout the administrative state, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit recently held in Jarkesy v. Securities and Exchange Commission1 that the Securities and Exchange Commission's use of its in-house administrative law judges ("ALJs") to adjudicate securities fraud actions seeking the imposition of monetary penalties was unconstitutional for three independent reasons.
Amy Barrett: The Undogmatic Justice
Amy Coney Barrett has no use for partisanship on the high court.
The undogmatic justice
By the end of the summer, the Supreme Court had a vacancy. The president nominated the jurist he “judged most qualified” to serve on the court, but thanks to the vacancy’s timing and the president’s urgency to fill the seat in time to hear cases in the court’s fall term, there was little time for Senate hearings or input.

Minister's Corner: Think on these things
Supervisor of pastoral/spiritual care, St. Anthony Hospital Shawnee One Monday morning a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised to learn that the annual Academy Awards show had been broadcast the night before. I don’t remember the last time I watched the event, but I’d always seemed to know it was coming up. This year, though, I didn’t know when it was, who or what was nominated, nothing. Now don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t sorry I missed it.
Minister's Corner: The goodness of God
Just over a year ago now, our community entered one of the most difficult periods most of us have ever known. Compounding the weight of the experience was the fact that it wasn’t limited to our community. The COVID crisis, of course, was global in nature. When the pressure seemed too much to bear, there was nowhere to go to escape – COVID was there, too. Schools and businesses were closed. Churches had to stop meeting in person right as Easter arrived.
Minister's Corner: Answer your call
Supervisor of Pastoral/Spiritual Care, St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital It’s no revelation that the COVID pandemic has impacted us all. For some, it’s been simply the disruption of a change in schedule or routine. For some, it’s been a loss of income. For far too many, it’s been the death of a loved one. And to those of you who have experienced that gut-wrenching loss, I want to extend my sincerest condolences.
INSIGHT: Supreme Court Ruling Does Not End the Fight Over the CFPB
The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Seila Law v. CFPB allows the president to fire at will the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an independent federal agency. The court held that removal protections found in the Dodd-Frank Act were unconstitutional and violated separation of powers.

Letter to the Editor: Death penalty story shows bias
I just finished reading the front page story provided by The Oklahoman regarding the resumption of the death penalty in Oklahoma ("Families of murder victims say resumption of executions in Oklahoma may bring them closer to justice," Feb. 16). This wasn't a news story; this was an editorial masquerading as a news story. The story describes the trauma that the families of homicide victims experience.
Place opioid blame where it belongs
The physicians of the Charleston County Medical Society welcome the attention brought to the rising death rate from opioid overdoses. Concern over the loss of life and impact on our communities has reached the tipping point where action is needed and being demanded. Legislators have answered in kind — over 60 bills have been introduced at the federal level, including some sponsored by our own Sen. Tim Scott.
Barnabas Clothing v Kabbage and the Bank Origination Model
A recently filed California lawsuit raises the stakes in the ongoing challenge to the “bank origination model.” The lawsuit, Barnabas Clothing, Inc. v. Kabbage, Inc., was filed on March 22, 2018 in Superior Court in Los Angeles and recently removed to the federal court.1 Barnabas alleges violations of state usury, false advertising, and unfair competition laws, and asserts two federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (“RICO”) Act claims.
