Dwight Muhammad Qawi vs Bob Foster LHW
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Devon, . Who wins this matchup?
Jerry Quarry vs. Bob Foster: Who wins?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by SerbianLoudmouth, . Angry Jerry vs Foster? What is your opinion and who would win if Jerry wanted to revenge his brother after he saw what Foster did to Mike? Foster still wins. Quarry just cuts too easy and Foster is so aggressive. Foster TKO cuts 5. He could stop Quarry on cuts, but no way Quarry is getting KO'd. Richard M Murrieta, Dubblechin and Toney F*** U like this. Quarry doesn't have to be angry to beat Foster.
Max Baer vs. Tony Galento
Well, I disagree with you on one thing. I find this a very entertaining fight. It is even more entertaining if one is good at reading lips. Two obvious points. This is the first film I have seen in which Baer is the more skilled fighter. And this is the only film I have seen of Baer in which he is not the dirtiest fighter in the ring. Galento managed to commit every foul possible. The referee seemed content to let the two fellows have at it.
Does Greg Page not remind anyone of Henry Hank?

John Conteh 1976 vs Thomas Hearns at 175 lbs. 15 Rounds.
John Conteh 1976 vs Thomas Hearns at 175 lbs. The Conteh that defeated Alvaro Yaqui Lopez on Oct 18 1976 goes against the Hearns that defeated Virgil Hill. Who takes this 15 rounder? The winner takes on WBA champion Victor Galindez in Monte Carlo, Monaco, which was a hot spot for boxing back then. John was a natural light heavyweight while Hearns had to grow into that weight. Why haven't we seen an all time great southpaw heavyweight?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by dmt, . Why haven't we seen an all time great southpaw heavyweight? The closest anyone has come is Moorer. Perhaps i am forgetting someone but i believe all of the true ATG's were orthodox fighters. Is it simply because southpaws in general are exceedingly rate? Rocky Balboa was a southpaw although he showed the ability to switch orthodox in the Creed rematch.

Thomas Hearns vs Gerald McClellan At MW
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by sas6789, . hearns does. mcellan is tougher and bigger mw. PhillyPhan69 and Bokaj like this. Don't blink, That's all I can say! Hearns easily. McClellan is ONLY a puncher. Tommy had far more to his game than just that. There's a permanent question mark hovering over discussions about Gerald. How good was his durability? Was his near fatal injury against Benn due to a predisposition, like Johnny Owens? Was he at risk through his whole career?
Prime Pinklon Thomas vs Prime Cleveland Williams
"Cleveland (Big Cat) Williams, who shattered the title hopes of 7th ranked Alex Miteff with a 5th round TKO, set up a howl today for a shot at champion Floyd Patterson. If Williams ever looked as though he deserved a shot at the title, it was Tuesday night.
Gene Fullmer's reverse cross guard explained- Beating the GOAT - Technique breakdown
I for one would appreciate that. I argued with someone (not on this forum) where they insisted the cross-guard was an overrated stance that did more harm than good and was outdated in the modern boxing game. I really didn't have the knowledge at the time to argue with him other than point at the likes of Archie Moore or Norton and say, "worked well enough for them." Super-frustrating.
Cleveland Big Cat Williams 1959 vs Frank Bruno 1986.
Why Williams Win: - "In a way he's tougher to fight than Liston because he has the speed the other doesn't have. You can't walk around Cleveland like you can Liston." -Eddie Machen - True gangster, the only one who made Sonny Liston fight going backwards once. Something george foreman can't do. - Me - "He's got plenty of heart, and that's the big thing. I hit him with some real hard punches in the second round and he just took it and came back." - Bob Satterfield
Floyd Patterson v Harold Johnson
Johnson's form was wonderful but he reached a bit with that jab. Imagine Floyd got the ranges right? Could be over very, very quickly with those fast hands and that spring going over the top of that jab.
Best/Greatest Boxer-Punchers?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by George Crowcroft, . So best, as in who did it better than anyone else and Greatest, as in who is the greatest fighter you'd class as a boxer puncher. Also if you wouldn't mind explaining what you'd class as a boxer puncher I'd appreciate it. So name em... A boxer puncher is... Someone who can combine both boxing and punching / slugging / aggression. No need to complicate it, though it can get naunced.
Jack Johnson (of Ketchel fight) vs. Jack Dempsey (of Willard fight)
Johnson can run but he can’t hide. He wouldn’t have his typical size advantage that he had over many of his opponents. Wouldn’t be able to get away with the excessive clinching either. Dempsey would pressure him, stalk him, and close the distance in the later rounds. Late round KO for Dempsey. Click to expand... Dempsey's vaunted inside game wasn't so devastating against Brennan, Gibbons, and Sharkey. He wore those guys down, but it took a while.
Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Louis prime for prime.
Ali by UD. Joe showed vulnerabilities against every clever boxer type with good feet that he fought. Add Ali’s size advantage, reach advantage and his great durability and fighting heart and I cannot see Joe beating him. Louis was a truly great fighter and a great combination puncher with excellent hand speed so I wouldn’t write him off but I believe Ali would win say a 12 rounds to three type decision.
Tony Canzoneri vs Lou Ambers
My post from the scorecard thread. 'Tony Canzoneri vs Lou Ambers 1 I refrained from scoring as there are missing rounds. Also interesting how the projector can play some rounds at normal speed, but fast forwards others, though it wasn't a problem. The quality was very good. I enjoyed Jacobs commentary on this one. He seemed very impressed with both, especially in comparison to fighters like Corbett from earlier. Two legends in the ring.
Amateur greats who turned pro too late?
This thread is inspired by the thread on how well Felix Savon would have done as pro: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/felix-savon-what-if.648780/ I argued there that it is more useful to consider amateur greats who did turn pro but too late, because we really have too little information on how career amateurs would have done as pros. Simply put, it is almost impossible to get a grasp of a fighter's stamina, chin, and heart within the confines of 9-minute matches.
Sonny Liston vs Ken Norton, both prime, 15 rounds.

Ernie Terrell vs Cleveland Williams. your scorecard please.
This content is protected I scored this fight 7 rounds to Terrell 3 rounds to Williams. It’s fought at a very good pace. Each round hard fought. Both guys are in excellent shape and both trying to win. The best round for Williams was round 3. And the best round for Terrell was round 9. It was a very rough fight. Terrell controlled most of the fight by beating Williams to the punch then claiming him before Williams could respond.
Joe Bygraves v Kitione Lave 1956
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Unforgiven, . Nice brief clips of the fight for the Britsh Empire title in 1956. This content is protected Bygraves from a very tough fighter, a bit erratic but a very capable boxer on his good nights. Kitione Lave was a powerful Tongan puncher. Both were very popular fighters in Britain in the 1950s. crixus85, The Senator, Jason Thomas and 1 other person like this. Larry Holmes (1978) V Joe Frazier (1971)?
I am really surprised that Joe got an overwhelming vote. This is one of the greatest heavyweight battles of all time. Joe's style makes the difference though, and I go with Joe SD, maybe even a draw, but that is less likely. Personally, I think Holmes would trouble Frazier more than Ali did due to greater power and aggressiveness early on. The fight would probably be even better than Norton vs. Holmes since Frazier didn't do near as much boxing as Norton did.
Fighters who were great in rematches
Miguel Canto: - Had a draw and a split-decision win in two ten-rounders against Ignacio Espinal before beating him in a wide, uncontested UD when Espinal challenged for the title (one of the two ten-rounders is controversial in the DR, although I don't remember which) - Lost his first world title fight to Betulio Gonzalez but then defeated Gonzalez in two subsequent championship fights - Went 3-0 against Shoji Oguma, but the first win (MD) was extremely close, the second (SD) was...
George Foreman's Top 10 Heavyweights!!!
Here's the list he posted on his website a few years back: 1. Joe Louis. To be honest with you, number two is way off. Joe Louis is in a class by himself. 2. Rocky Marciano. Just look at Rocky Marciano's record. Nobody beat him. You can't take that from him. 3. Jack Johnson. A big brave cat, because he'd do whatever he wanted and get out of the way. 4. Muhammad Ali. Put him down as the GREATEST MAN to ever box, and a hero bigger than boxing.
Who would have won if Jimmy Ellis had fought Thad Spencer in The WBA Tournament Of 1967?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Richard M Murrieta, . Who would have won if Jimmy Ellis had faced Thad Spencer in the WBA Tournament of 1967? Spencer completely outclassed Ernie Terrell on points, he even decked Ernie in their fight, while Jimmy Ellis stopped future Sonny Liston conquer Leotis Martin in round 9. I would take Ellis. Spencer had that awesome win over Terrell, but I don't know much about him beyond that. It seems like he was less consistent than Ellis.
Controversial fights where the referee deeply affected the outcome
What are some controversial fights where a referee has made some outlandish, poor, and bogus decisions that really affected the fight outcome?
Michael Moorer vs Greg Page (Poll added)
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Devon, . At their best, Page KO 5 Moorer. Tough. 50/ 50 match. I like these two for two fights. Moorer wins the first by UD and Page wins the second by RTD 8. I feel like both men would go down on route to a decision that could go either way, but I think that Moorer's peak was a little bit higher than Page's. Greg's best chance is to stop Michael before the fight's over, and he totally could with that underrated power of his.
Lennox Lewis vs. Tony Tucker
tbh, if Lewis hadn't knocked Tucker down those two times, I would have called the fight a draw Last edited: May 20, 2020

Pinklon Thomas vs Tony Tubbs
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Devon, . I really don't think this is a tough one to decide. Thomas is stronger and in better shape. A peak Thomas would win a fairly easy decision over the overweight Tubbs. The only advantage Tubbs has is speed, but I don't see how that will help him here. Thomas UD, maybe Tubbs can get a draw on one card, but I see it getting no better for him. Thomas' offense is just to impregnable for someone like Tubbs. InMemoryofJakeLamotta, mr.
The Workshop of Jabs: Harold Johnson vs. Ezzard Charles
This content is protected 9. As the story so obviously goes, a close round for the scorecards, but Charles was a little more aggressive than Johnson and landed the more powerful blows. Another good exchange or two in this round. Charles. 10. Johnson popped a wicked right almost immediately that stunned Charles. However, at the end of the round, Charles landed a wicked right of his own. Johnson had his back to a corner and lost his footing and went down. Charles.
Jack Dempsey vs. Cowboy Lutrell
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by William Walker, . This content is protected 1. Dempsey brutalized Lutrell all through the round. It seemed almost a no-holds barred affair as I once saw Dempsey strike down upon Lutrell's neck with his elbow. 2. The 2nd was wild. Dempsey held and hit all the way through. At one point he stood behind a dazed Lutrell, punching him. A left hook put Lutrell down on one knee. Jack was right in with a left that put Lutrell down instantly in the corner.
Did George Foreman duck anyone ?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Claw4075, . I heard that he ducked Holmes. Is this true ? From memory Holmes was steered away from him in the 70's after an offer. He wasn't ready and one can't blame them for that. There's been loads of talk he ducked Holmes in the 90's but someone here had a story up a while back showing that the fight was ready to roll and i just can't remember what happened to cancel it.
Who Would Have Won The "No Mas Fight" If Duran Didn't Quit?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Italian Stallion, . Would Sugar Ray Leonard still have officially won that night? Duran should have asked what was more ignominious, quitting the way he did or showing a big poop stain on his trunks after his "tummy issues" resolved themselves. A true warrior chooses the poop stain, always. Leonard increases the gap on the scorecards and wins by decision something like a 10-5 score. Cleveland Big Cat Williams of 1960 vs Oscar Ringo Bonavena 1970.
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Richard M Murrieta, . Cleveland Big Cat Williams of 1960 vs Oscar Ringo Bonavena 1970. Could the Big Cat stop the mop haired Ringo early? Or would Oscar be too much for Williams? Williams would never stop Bonavena but he has a minority chance of beating him. Bonavena UD. Wouldn't be surprised if he beat Williams into a stoppage. choklab, The Fighting Yoda, Titan1 and 1 other person like this.
Trevor Berbick vs Tommy Morrison
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Agent E-45, . Both primes. What do you all think? I think Berbick would wear Morrison down. Both men blew hot and cold. Trevor defeated prime versions of Page, Tate and Thomas, but also dropped losses to Mercado, Gordon and Snipes. He was stopped only twice in some 62 bouts though which is something to consider.
Jimmy Young vs Jerry Quarry?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by KeedCubano, . Probably Young by decision InMemoryofJakeLamotta, Richard M Murrieta, George Crowcroft and 2 others like this. I would favour Young too. Quarry excelled at handling big strong punchers, but struggled a little vs slicker guys like Ellis. I favour Young in a close competive fight. InMemoryofJakeLamotta, Richard M Murrieta, 70sFan and 2 others like this. I view Quarry as better fighter, but Young had right style to beat him.
Best fight of the 4 Kings?
1. Duran-Leonard I 2. Leonard-Hearns I 3. Hagler-Hearns-I love the brutality of this fight, but rank it lower because of its repetitiveness. 4. Hagler-Duran-Just a pet peeve of mine. One of the most action-packed the 4 Kings had. 5. Leonard-Duran II-Not a great fight, but SRL was in top form, and I would say it was one of his finest performances. 6. Leonard-Hagler 7. Hearns-Leonard II 8.
Battling Siki vs. Georges Carpentier
Both Carpentier (in his final biography) and Siki (at the time) agree that the fight was planned ahead of time as a fix. And they both claim they were double crossed. If these claims are to be believed**, they had agreed to disregard the rules of the game and fight according to their own private set of rules, so any outcome is okay with me. Siki was PO'd because he felt Georges had violated their pre-fight agreement to go easy, so who's to say he was wrong in what he did?
Jerry Quarry vs Ernie Terrell, Prime For Prime, 15 Rounds.
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Richard M Murrieta, . Jerry Quarry vs Ernie Terrell, Prime For Prime, 15 Rounds. Quarry had a lot of trouble with Ali. I really can't see Quarry being able to get inside on Terrell, and even if he could, I don't know that it would do much good; Terrell was a nightmare inside. Terrell would quickly cut Quarry up with that lightning bolt jab of his. If it goes 15, I see Terrell controlling the first 3-5 rounds on the jab.

Jack Johnson vs. Tommy Burns
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by William Walker, . Continuing with my return to boxing, I watched this one last night shortly after watching Tommy Burns beat down Gunner Moir. He won the IBF junior middleweight title in 1986 over Carlos Santos and made a couple of successful defenses, including one over Davey Moore, before dropping it to Matthew Hilton.
Kid Gavilan vs. Billy Graham III
I thought I was going to almost totally agree with you during the first half of the fight. Gavilan was pressing the action, throwing many more punches, and effective with left hooks to the body. But the fight turned around during the second half for me. Gavilan threw a lot fewer punches and even began retreating with Graham the one coming forward. Graham got that quick right home quite a bit. Gavilan seemed to give up his body attack.

Tim Witherspoon vs Tommy Morrison 1993
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by CooperKupp, . I think this one would have been interesting. I guess it depends on which Morrison shows up. The one that fought AND trained smart for Foreman would have been a serious challenge to Witherspoon. But the one that bones chicks and drinks throughout a half ass training camp most likely gets stopped at some point in this one. Probably similar to the Mercer fight. A really good first 4-5 rounds then bam.

Technically they were BOTH Jamaican.. but yes they both trained and fought out of Canada. Not an important detail however...
