Midas in Munich | The New Criterion
Should opera be set in a modern idiom? This burning question found its latest answer in Munich this summer, where the Bavarian State Opera presented new productions of Richard Strauss’s penultimate opera, Die Liebe der Danae, from 1940, and of Gabriel Fauré’s only true opera, Pénélope, from 1913. Both of these rarely performed twentieth-century works are set in the legendary world of ancient Greece, and both were presented here in modern settings.

The safety of supported psilocybin use in Oregon - Nature Medicine
Legalized psilocybin services have recently begun in the US state of Oregon after a rule-making process initiated by the state’s Ballot Measure 109 in 2020. These services are governed by the Oregon Health Authority, but regulations allow for personal use and rely on facilitators as guides during use. No clinical indication is needed, and guides need not be trained therapists.

Source measurement of direct emissions from solid-fuel burning The details about the set-up of our lab burning experiments are available in Trubetskaya et al.31. Briefly, test fuels including sod peat (from Ireland), wood logs (softwood grown in Ireland), and coal (imported from Poland) were purchased from local outlets31. Solid firelighters were also purchased from a local outlet (TESCO Ireland) and were used to ignite these fuels.

Why is the Great Salt Lake shrinking? It's not climate change
The Great Salt Lake, or the "Bad Water," as it was known to the Shoshoni, exists thanks to climate change. The present lake was formed from a much larger lake, Lake Bonneville, about 30,000 years ago. A drier climate reduced Lake Bonneville to the Great Salt Lake's current dimensions. The lake has persisted within its historical size range for nearly 13,000 years.
Rapid assessment of the extent of feral introgression in British and Irish Rock Dove (Columba livia) populations
Abstract Interbreeding of related forms following anthropogenic activity can lead to genomic homogenization, contributing to decreasing biodiversity. Assessing spatiotemporal variation in the extent of introgression is important for conservation but can be expensive and logistically complex. The Rock Dove Columba livia is threatened by interbreeding with its feral conspecific and it is difficult to identify wild birds when wild, feral and mixed populations exist.

Widespread spring phenology effects on drought recovery of Northern Hemisphere ecosystems - Nature Climate Change
Abstract The time required for an ecosystem to recover from severe drought is a key component of ecological resilience. The phenology effects on drought recovery are, however, poorly understood. These effects centre on how phenology variations impact biophysical feedbacks, vegetation growth and, ultimately, recovery itself.

Senate misfires with prescription drug bill - CommonWealth Magazine
ON THURSDAY, the Massachusetts Senate passed another ill-considered piece of legislation, Senate Bill 2651, that would impose price controls on one of Massachusetts most important economic sectors, biopharmaceuticals. The bill is ill-considered because its authors assume, as they say in their press release, that the legislation is necessary because of “rapidly rising prescription drug costs.” This assumption is false. Drug costs and drug prices are not “rising rapidly,” just the opposite.
Two Models of Legalization of Psychedelic Substances
In 1973, the federal government classified psychedelics as schedule I substances, rendering possession illegal, even for research purposes except under tightly regulated circumstances.

Observed increasing water constraint on vegetation growth over the last three decades
Abstract Despite the growing interest in predicting global and regional trends in vegetation productivity in response to a changing climate, changes in water constraint on vegetation productivity (i.e., water limitations on vegetation growth) remain poorly understood. Here we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of changes in water constraint on vegetation growth in the extratropical Northern Hemisphere between 1982 and 2015.
The Holman Research Pathway in Radiation Oncology: 2010 to 2019
Abstract Purpose There has not been an assessment of the Holman Research Pathway (HRP) in radiation oncology (RO) in nearly 10 years. In this study, we sought to review the demographic characteristics, research productivity during and after residency, job placements, and National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant funding of RO residents who completed the HRP in the modern era. Methods and Materials We created a comprehensive database of RO residents who completed the HRP between 2010 and 2019.

Health Care/ Opinion Institute should wait for more data before pricing pronouncement By William Smith May 17, 2021 THE BOSTON-BASED Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) sells itself as an independent source of information on the value of pharmaceuticals. But earlier this month, their bias was again evident when they tried to kneecap a drug for a dreaded disease before there’s even enough data to determine how valuable the drug really is.

Crews battle fire at multi-family home in Waterbury
WATERBURY, Conn. — Firefighters responded to an early-morning house fire in Waterbury on Friday. Officials were called around 4:20 a.m. to a multi-family home on Oak Street and to battle the blaze. It took crews an hour to get the 2-alarm fire under control. Upon arrival, officials said the rear porches were fully involved and fire was coming out from 2nd, 3rd floor, and attic. Waterbury PD helped residents get out. It has not yet been confirmed how many people were living inside the home.
Dead Letters
AP Photo/Daniel Ochoa de Olza In a plea for vocational education, Sen. Marco Rubio famously remarked that we could use ‘more welders and less philosophers’. Doesn’t everyone know that ‘skills pay the bills’? If things weren’t bad enough, the rise of deconstruction and critical theory has created a generation of humanities scholars who themselves see little value in the works they study, insisting that famous art and literature emerged from racist and sexist power structures.

Make Certain All Patients Can Access Necessary Medications
by Sal Nuzzo and William Smith | Mar 30, 2020 In the wake of attempts to curb the spread of COVID-19, it’s vital to take every opportunity to examine the impact of healthcare policies on our state’s elderly population. As the virus’ impacts are most concerning in older individuals, the fact that more than 20 percent of Florida’s population is over 65 makes this especially important as the Sunshine State manages both the containment as well as treatment protocols.

Stop the war on drug coupons - CommonWealth Magazine
THROUGHOUT HISTORY, some revolutions ended up turning on the very people they claimed to be defending. With the calls to ban drug coupons, rebels against the drug industry in Massachusetts seem to be turning on patients themselves. Massachusetts is again considering a ban on drug coupons that significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs for patients, a ban that would take effect on January 1 unless the Legislature acts to reverse it, which they should.
Stiff isotropic lattices beyond the Maxwell criterion
Abstract Materials with a stochastic microstructure, like foams, typically exhibit low mechanical stiffness, whereas lattices with a designed microarchitecture often show notably improved stiffness. These periodic architected materials have previously been designed by rule, using the Maxwell criterion to ensure that their deformation is dominated by the stretching of their struts.

Commentary: Proposed drug price caps would stall health care advances
Imagine if the Maine Legislature decided that large pickup trucks were becoming too expensive for the working-class people who drive them. Then imagine that legislators established a commission designed to study the costs to manufacture and sell these trucks. After careful study, the commission then concluded that large pickups produce a $3,000 profit per truck for their manufacturers.
