The room buzzed with vibrant, positive energy both personal and professional, polished yet candid. This dedicated session for women in leadership brought together an inspiring mix of participants, from future leaders still in elementary school to seasoned professionals across finance, technology, marketing, product, HR, and more.
Two Alameda County supervisors: We must come together to halt evictions and foreclosures
© Paul Sakuma / AP 2009 A foreclosed home is shown in Mountain View during the Great Recession in May 2009. Now more than ever, access to a safe and stable home environment is essential to the well-being of our residents and communities. In the past week, Alameda County has seen most of its businesses, organizations and schools close in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Opinion: Now all of Alameda County has community representation
When the Eden Area Municipal Advisory Council held its inaugural meeting this month, it signified the first time that all unincorporated areas of Alameda County finally had the community representation they deserve. Creation of the new advisory council was approved last year by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors after years of community engagement.

Opinion: Measure would ease Alameda County child care crisis
In Alameda County, our youngest children face a harsh reality: The waiting list for quality child care is so long — 7,000 children and counting — that children are denied access to the early education they need and aren’t ready for kindergarten. Raising children of our own and now watching grandchildren grow, we know the power in developing children’s minds early and setting them up for K-12 success.
Immigrants afraid to get care a public health issue
Cinco de Mayo, the celebration of Mexican-American culture, reminded us that as a community, Alameda County embraces many cultures and draws strength from the diversity of our immigrants —whether newly arrived or longtime residents. As health care providers and administrators, we see this diversity every day — from the neighbors who come through our doors to the colleagues who arrived here from all points on the map.
My Word: Must work together to eliminate lead poisoning
Each time it rains in Oakland, aging and flaking lead paint is washed off the side of countless apartment buildings and rental homes and into our soil. When the rain clears, our youngest children kick a ball or play tag in their yards and are unwittingly subjected to a risk of lead poisoning. Lead exposure, especially in newborns and young children, can harm brain development and lead to severe health impacts.

Guest commentary: Tackling some of Alameda County's issues together
In more than 25 years of public service, I have witnessed the many challenges of poverty in Alameda County. Our community struggles with a lack of affordable housing, the anxiety of not knowing where the next meal is coming from and the difficulty of finding quality childcare and living-wage jobs. That is why two years ago I joined a coalition of local government, nonprofit and private sector leaders to declare a new war on poverty.
