Now that Nadia Larsen is cancer free, she has a New Year's resolution: "I'm gonna be a selfish bitch." Before Larsen got cancer, she was supermom. She did it all and put her husband's and children's needs before her own. "When you're dead and gone, nobody's gonna put a big statue there, reading 'Mother of the Year,'" she says. "My goal now is to take care of me." When the centenarian saguaro in her front yard fell over, she didn't care.

In the Flesh: A Live Show Review Turns into a Conversation with the Quietly Rising Lengaus Largas, Who Just Returned from a Japanese Tour. | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Fresh from a tour of Japan that took them to Tokyo, Ashikaga, Tokushima, Osaka and Kyoto, Lenguas Largas played their first show back at Club Congress Saturday Night with Zen Mother (from Seattle, Washington) and Phoenix’s Vatican Ratlines. It was a well-attended congregation of the devout. In Spanish the band’s name refers to a gossip whose talk is mostly horseshit. Having said that, more people should be talking shit about Lenguas Largas.
Tour Diaries! XIXA on the Last Days of the Euro Bloodline Tour | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Days 19-21 and Epilogue.Sometimes, it feels like the road does go on forever. There are the days that are so triumphant, you wish that it would go on forever. Some days, you wonder what on earth you are doing out here, what kind of madman you are for going through all of this.I don't have a straight answer for any of it.
Tour Diaries! XIXA Skinsman Winston Watson Lays Out Some Stage Rules of the Road ... From France, Days 17-18 | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Day 17-18Toulouse and Bordeaux, France.Cooperation, sacrifice, and The Hang.Being in a band, is as Don Henley says, "is like being in a marriage. In our case, amplify that by five." I don't quote him, too often, but... he's right. But, it's not that simple. Human beings are fascinating. Sit quietly and watch one. It's never boring. In all the time spent on and off the road, playing in bands, you get to witness many things, bizarre and ordinary.
Tour Diaries! XIXA Day 16: How Ariano, Italy, is Kinda Close To Tucson | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Day 16Ariano, ItalyI've been to many cities in Italy, but, Ariano has its own special, unique charm, much like how Tucson isn't really like the rest of Arizona, or like how Austin isn't like the rest of Texas. After being fleeced in Turin, we were elated that our next stop after Ravenna was Ariano. Some of you may remember last year, when Air Malta left my suitcase in Milan and didn't lift a finger to find it, after 11 days.

It's really great, when you eat like king but have the purse of a pauper. After the events that took place in Turin, a million thoughts go through your head. Should, coulda, woulda. All for naught. Life moves on, you dust off, you keep moving. Today, we are in Ravenna, Italy, to do a show tonight.

Eager passengers gathered under dark, threatening clouds at Mercado San Agustin station, early Saturday evening. It was a celebration—a moving one too thanks to Jimmy Carr and The Awkward Moments—to commemorate the third anniversary of Tucson’s modern streetcar (Sun Link). (Since its July, ’14 launch, the streetcar has provided approximately 2.93 million rides to passengers.)Once everyone that could possibly fit onto the streetcar was loaded, the tram departed.

Then fetchingly monikered Lola Torch explains the Tucson Libertine League’s second event with this tagline: “We guarantee we’ll make you sweat, but we promise you’ll love it."It’s unlike anything else that you likely see in a Moldy Pueblo summer.Combining the raw power and tension of rock ‘n’ roll with the expressive movement of dance, Tucson Libertine League’s Burlesque Battle of the Bands promises to be a monumental clash of sorts.
Tour Diaries! XIXA Day 13: Italian Thieves! XIXA Tour Van Busted Into, Gear Ripped Off. | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Day 13Thirteen.That unlucky number. I never believed that, until today. While we slept (late), thieves went shopping in our Mercedes Sprinter. It didn't help that the vehicle has a logo that screams, "Look! All-You-Can-Steal band gear inside!"We were just enjoying our days off in Turin, Italy.
Tour Diaries! XIXA Days 10 and 11: On the Road From Switzerland to Italy. Also, Fetching Slovenian Checkpoint Guards! | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Day 11-12We drove from Thun, Switzerland to Turin (Torino), Italy, to play another cool festival. There are only a few border checkpoints left in Europe. Somehow, I always wind up talking to the guards at those checkpoints. In Slovenia, the guards who stopped us looked like Sophia Loren, in the '60s. (faints) I forgot my own name. Yes, they were that beautiful...The Italian guards were serious as a heart murmur, and not particularly attractive.

Tour Diaries: XIXA Day 8: 'Gabe Heard and Saw Me Reset My Knee From Across the Room.' | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Day 8Limitations of the human body and the Road.Touring, although adventurous and fun, can be hard on the human vessel. In any "normal" daily routine, one hopes not to fall ill from any number of things. Out here, it's important to stay as healthy as possible. To start, you'r far from home. Add to that strange food and food-handling practices and there's cause for worry.

Tour Diaries! XIXA Day 7: Memories of Dylan and Meeting Former Czech President Václav Havel at Gunpoint. Also, Sold Out Show! | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Ostrava, Czech Republic to Nürenberg, Germany. We played the Colours of Ostrava Festival last night to a packed house full of people of all ages. For me, this was one of those moments when I was glad I became a musician and not a pilot. The first time I came to the Czech Republic was in 1993, with a singer/songwriter with a pretty big following, worldwide.I met Václav Havel three times, and once was held at gunpoint by his Secret Service men. Havel saw what was happening, and called them off.
Tour Diaries! XIXA in Fun, Fun, Fun on the Autobahn. Detained! | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
July 19. Day off (not really). Travel Day.Today's adventure takes us from Offenbach, Germany to Ostrovo, Czech Republic. In order to do that, we had to drive the Autobahn.(11+ hours)Contrary to popular belief, the Autobahn isn't a free-fire zone, where one can act like Mario Andretti and just haul ass and go speedy crazy. There are rules and what are called control zones. The best rule I observed while driving here is that people stay to the right, except to pass.
In The Flesh: DJ Shadow and Mophono at The Rialto—Masterful Visuals and Sonic History Lessons | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
DJ Shadow with MophonoRialto TheatreJuly 19Appealing to the psychedelic purple chakra and the primal red root at once, Mophono and DJ Shadow took us on a rollercoaster of the mind, through moody, soul-deep bass, melodic jazz and classic hiphop. All the elements were masterful—the cuts, the breaks, the scratching and the samples. Two turntables and hardly any microphone had us alternately listening hard and pounding our fists in the air.

Tour Diaries! XIXA Day 5: Winston Watson Weighs In on Some Stinks! | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Monday, July 15: Day 5 Tour smells. The sights, the sounds, the-smells of a hard-working rock band on the road. Airplanes. "All train compartments smell vaguely of sh*t." - Al Pacino, Glengarry Glenross. It's true of planes, add jet fuel, add bad, stale food to that, and airports and you have an olfactory nightmare. Venues. If the venue is a club, add all the above scents, plus eau de vomit. Moving on to ... Diesel. It's everywhere. Especially on you. Funk. In an all-male environment, funk happens.
Tour Diaries! XIXA Day 3: Germany, White Dreads, and the Calm Before the Storm | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
So I'm sitting here, backstage at the Transit Festival. The festival grounds are in Germany, about as far northeast as you could possibly go before touching Polish countryside. I've been to a lot of places ... but I've never been here. It seems like a dystopian hippy commune. The people are nice and friendly. I see a lot of hemp, Tevas, and dreadlocks (on white people—which, we can all agree, is a different type of dreadlock).
Tour Diaries! XIXA Day 2: What was that Motorhead song again?. 'WE ARE THE ROAD CREW!' | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch

Song of the Day: Billy Sedlmayr on Rainer Ptacek's 'A Stone’s Throw Away' | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
Recently I found an old box of cassette tapes—things even I could not destroy. I came upon a green TDK with the words “Giant Sandworms 1st Gig” scrolled on it. A neighbor of mine still owned a tape deck—the old kind. I took it home and ran a pencil through the spools to loosen up 30-some years, sat down, switched off the light, pushed play, and for a second, I could almost make out the faces ...Tumbleweeds Bar down on 4th Ave, ‘cross from Choo Choo's, stamping hands, a crowd, Giant Sandworms.
Tour Diaries! XIXA on Their Ongoing Bloodline Tour (Part IV). Day 1: 'Put in a Sack and Thrown in the Back.' | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch
God laughs when you make plans. So do airlines. The weather had its way with Chicago and us. In typical fashion, we got it together, got to the airport early, got upgraded to first class only to be turned around by an alert notice on my AA app. "Flight cancelled due to storms, we have accommodated you on another flight, but your class of service will be changed." Translation: Put in a sack, and thrown in the back.Even the weather channel conspired against us with its scary radar reports.
