What became ubiquitous then went away in your lifetime?
April 10, 2026, 10:01pm 1 There are the two threads, one about how things are different from when you were a child, and the other is how are things the same. There are the two threads, one about how things are different from when you were a child, and the other is, how are things the same. What are things that weren’t there when you were a child, but became ubiquitous or very popular, and then went away? For me, the first thing I think about is the fax machine.
Season of the Kvetch (October mini-rants)
October 1, 2025, 1:25pm 1 Continuing the discussion from Pee-ew in September (September mini rants): It’s now time to stress about Halloween. I generally love the holiday but every year we get more and more trick-or-treaters. Last year we went through three giant bags of assorted candy from Costco and this year I have no idea how much it will take. There are just more people around each year.
Who's watching trump's Address to Congress tonight (3-4-25)?
March 4, 2025, 8:04pm 1 I’m not sure if I will watch or not. I haven’t been watching or reading trump-related news too much, or very actively participating in the trump threads here lately, because my attitude towards the trump administration is largely shell-shocked, numb bemusement.
Tonight's lunar occulation of Mars
7 I lost sight of Mars at the last minute, since the full moon was so bright. I didn’t dare aim my binoculars at the moon; I don’t think they would help. I remember a Venus occultation in the 1980s. It started right about dawn, so the moon was a small crescent. When Venus reappeared an hour or so later, it was from behind the dark part of the moon, so Venus just popped into existence. That was cool.
August Disgust (Monthly Mini-Rants)
August 1, 2024, 6:26am 1 Continuing the discussion from I'm ranting at you, July! (July mini-rants): Starting off this month’s mini-rants to just talk about how tired I am all the time. I’m trying to get more sleep and going to bed at a regular hour but it doesn’t help. Today was a day off, I slept in, got up late (after going to bed at a decent time) and still needed an hour and a half nap midday. I used to never have this problem until I got Covid a couple years ago. Ugh.
State of the Union Address, March 7, 2024
March 8, 2024, 1:21am 1 I’ve got CNN on, and the address is due to start in about 40 minutes. Covering Gaza protesters outside the White House. Apparently, they want to block the road, preventing Biden’s motorcade from leaving. That’s unlikely to happen, but the commentator is saying that they’ll be happy if they score a symbolic victory.
Bad Ju-July (monthly mini-rants) [Old]
Continuing the discussion from June Bugs (monthly mini-rants): At my work, one of my customers came to me saying that her laptop won’t turn on. It didn’t die because the battery was dead, it was charged, it just decided to not power on anymore. Before putting in a warranty request, I decided to try some basic troubleshooting from Dell’s web site.
I pit Scentsy
Sounds like you passed a Yankee Candle store. I went into one once, because someone was requesting an item for a gift, and I smelled like that store the rest of the day even though all I handled was what I purchased. Several years ago, I went to a craft show and one of the vendors, who sold homemade hand cream, smeared some on me without asking me first. I nearly punched her. It was very strong smelling, too, and I couldn’t get rid of the odor.
