1 Introduction As integral features of the atmosphere, clouds have a broad span in spatial and temporal scales. They alter the distribution of the Earth's energy through strong interactions with solar and thermal radiation (Anton et al., 2017; Hatzianastassiou & Vardavas, 2001; King et al., 2013; Noel et al., 2018; Stubenrauch et al., 2013).
