Substantial impacts of climate shocks in African smallholder agriculture - Nature Sustainability
Abstract Climate change is affecting the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as droughts or floods, which result in loss and damage to people, crops and infrastructure. Global data on loss and damage used in research, policy and media primarily come from macrostatistics based on disaster inventories. Here, we propose a different approach, based on survey microdata.
Assessing COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and barriers to uptake in Sub-Saharan Africa - Communications Medicine
Abstract Despite improved availability of COVID-19 vaccines in Sub-Saharan Africa, vaccination campaigns in the region have struggled to pick up pace and trail the rest of the world. Yet, a successful vaccination campaign in Sub-Saharan Africa will be critical to containing COVID-19 globally. Here, we present new descriptive evidence on vaccine hesitancy, uptake, last-mile delivery barriers, and potential strategies to reach those who remain unvaccinated.
We conducted 50,000 interviews in Sub-Saharan Africa on COVID-19 vaccination since 2020 - here’s what we learned
It has been over three years since COVID-19 started disrupting livelihoods and brought in-person survey data collection to a near complete halt. Broad immunization against COVID-19 quickly emerged as the most sustainable solution to ending the pandemic. However, access to vaccines has been highly unequal, putting the poorest countries with the least means for domestic production or international procurement at a disadvantage.
Loss(t) in translation? Measuring disaster crop losses in surveys
Each year, crop production losses due to disasters cause economic losses in the billions of dollars and a loss in kilocalories that could potentially cut undernourishment in low-income countries (LICs) in half. By any definition, these losses are as significant from an aggregate economic perspective as they are a threat to the livelihoods of the poorest. Climate change threatens to increase this burden only further.
Sustainedly high levels of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in five Sub-Saharan African countries
In a previous blog post, we reported the results of a recent working paper finding high acceptance rates for an eventual COVID-19 vaccine in a sample of six Sub-Saharan African countries surveyed between September and December 2020. Since then, vaccine availability has become a reality, and vaccination campaigns are now underway in all countries covered.
A lot would take the shot: COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in six Sub-Saharan African countries
While the recent policy dialogue in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) focuses on vaccine supply and issues of financing, relatively little is known about the willingness to be vaccinated against COVID-19 within the population (a related blog post discusses some of the existing evidence).
Dealing with disruption: National statistical offices are adjusting to continued challenges as COVID-19 keeps affecting their operations
As various global restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic continue, so do disruptions to the operations of National Statistical Offices. This comes at a time when data remain key to inform evidence-based policymaking that addresses the manifold public health, economic, and social challenges countries face.
