The default male
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer The “” is a term that describes males as the norm in our society and in data collection. This results in research being done only on cis male bodies with effects on other bodies not even being considered. You might have heard about the standard office temperature being set for a male metabolic resting rate and therefore being five degrees too cold for cis women. And this, quite frankly, is the least of it.
What the Buddha Never Taught showcases outdated narratives
Home Arts What the Buddha Never Taught showcases outdated narratives By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer What the Buddha Never Taught is advertised as a “rock opera” and is based on the book with the same name by Tim Ward. Playing at Jericho Arts Centre until July 10, this show was not what I expected.
What Grinds Our Gears: Watching TV in class
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer I get it, class can be — and often is — super boring. And I’ll admit that I’ve taken the occasional opportunity to check out Instagram to see which of my friends are on their way to Spain, leaving me to fend for myself in this rollercoaster Vancouver weather. Sometimes I even feel like I can make a snoozy class more productive by catching up on a never-ending list of weekly SFU emails.
SFYou: Dr. Jen Marchbank
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Editor’s note: The acronym LGBTQ will be used, as is used by the interviewee. This is not meant to diminish or neglect those identifying with IA2S+. Dr. Jen Marchbank is a professor and graduate chair in the department of gender, sexuality, and women’s studies (GSWS), but her commitments don’t stop there. As a deeply engaged activist for the LGBTQ community, she inspires people to create the change they want to see through innovative teaching practices.
SFUnsolved: Joy Johnson is the Editor-in-Chief of The Peak
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Joy Johnson is the president of Simon Fraser University. Or is she? I’ve given this a ton of thought and at this point, there is not a doubt in my mind that Joy Johnson is actually Editor-in-Chief at The Peak. Okay, hear me out! First of all, Joy Johnson is like the most powerful person at SFU. I bet you she has people at her beck and call to do whatever she asks. Want a 3:00 a.m. bagel? She’ll probably have it within the hour.
The monster under my bed won’t pay rent
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Dear Mrs. Goldblum of Goldblum and Sons, I am writing to seek legal advice. I have this monster under my bed, like I am sure many of your clients have had. While I do not wish to evict him, I do need him to pay rent. My utilities have basically gone through the roof since he moved in, and I cannot carry the financial burden for the both of us, especially not in this economy. It’s quite difficult to communicate with him since he only grunts.

By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Dr. Jen Marchbank from SFU’s gender, sexuality and women’s studies department has curated the first LGBTQIA2S+ exhibit at the Museum of Surrey. This comes as part of the museum’s Show and Share displays with elements from the LGBTQIAS2+ community’s history in the city. The exhibit is currently on and will be open to view until September 4.
Authentic ramen connoisseur: Recipes from dormitory expert, Guy Ramsey
Home Humour Authentic ramen connoisseur: Recipes from dormitory expert, Guy Ramsey By:Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer It was the year 2011 and I had just come back from a trip to Japan, and all I wanted was a smooth ramen throwback to take me back to the cherry blossoms of Tokyo. Ramen is a Japanese noodle dish, for those of you who haven’t been lucky enough to go to Japan, like myself.
The Pool: The short, sad tale of Pascal Curious
Home Humour The Pool: The short, sad tale of Pascal Curious By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Pascal Curious walked from the library towards the Recreation Centre with a sluggish walk. Pascal was an ordinary student: they went to class, work, watched for aliens (since you can never be too sure!) And now, they were in the LONGEST library study session. It literally felt like they aged ten years in a day! Just yesterday they felt like a spry toddler. Odd.
The corporatization of Pride Month
Home Opinions The corporatization of Pride Month By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer, & C Icart, SFU Student Content warning: mentions of homophobia and transphobia Pride month merch from faceless, multi-billion-dollar corporations is among the most calculated, yet somehow weirdly personalized marketing schemes ever. Over the course of a month, companies with seemingly no relation to the movement will emblazon their logos with rainbow flags and produce cringy but supportive merchandise.
Top 10 ordinary things for your classmates to endure
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer A pineapple Why not bring this mystery to class? You could either rock your pineapple like a baby, bring it to the teacher like an out-of-the-box-thinking teacher’s pet, or whip it out of your backpack halfway through class and apologize for having to eat it. The future is clear (and tropical)! A full-sized cardboard cutout of Leonardo DiCaprio Bring a cardboard cutout of Leonardo DiCaprio to get your classmates talking — I speak from personal experience.
Pass Over uses morbid humour to critique systemic racism
Home Arts Pass Over uses morbid humour to critique systemic racism By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Content warning: mention of racial slur, racism, police brutality. Pass Over at the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island is a political commentary on Black men wanting a better life for themselves.
Events to not miss at Queer Arts Festival 2022
Home Arts Events to not miss at Queer Arts Festival 2022 By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer The Vancouver Queer Arts Festival (QAF) is in the top three list of LGBTQ2S+ arts festivals world-wide and features multimedia exhibitions, music, rooftop parties, and more.
A talk on Palestinian leadership under the British Mandate
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer On June 1, SFU’s Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies (CCMS) held an event at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in collaboration with The Caucus. Educator and activist Bassam Abun-Nadi explored the absence of military academies in Palestine and its effect on the country’s anti-colonial struggle. The British Mandate for Palestine started after World War I and lasted until 1948. It saw British rule over Palestine after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
We need an addendum to cancel culture
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Content warning: mention of suicide Cancel culture at its core is a beautiful concept: if you’re found to be behaving in a way that hurts others, people stop supporting you. But what the cancel culture era needs now is a way of accounting for personal growth. The last half-decade has been vital for our collective learning. I cringe at stuff I said just five years ago when I wasn’t as aware of ableist language.
The “Devil’s advocate” guy
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer “Just playing the devil’s advocate” is arguing for the sake of argument, and it helps nothing. I’ve had people tell me that white cisgender straight men are discriminated against in western societies, that hiring quotas are unfair, and that I wouldn’t know because I’m a woman. Never mind that I am doing a Masters in gender studies. It’s so ludicrous I can only assume people say this to wind me up. Why engage then?
SFU Surrey petitions to be the new It campus
Home Humour SFU Surrey petitions to be the new It campus By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Fellow campuses, I’ve included some flattering prelude from my fellow campus, UBC, who had this wonderful, original stuff to say about me. SFU Surrey is flawless. I hear the campus is insured for $1,000,000,000. I hear the campus advertisement was shot . . . in Japan. One time, the mall at SFU Surrey had a fire alarm that canceled all classes . . . It was awesome.
Monday Music: You went partying with Drake, now this is what you listen to
Home Arts Monday Music: You went partying with Drake, now this is what you... By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer In my personal opinion, grime is one of the best things to come out of the UK. This relatively new genre of music (2000s) that stems from a mix of garage, jungle, and hip hop has its epicenter in London. So here you have five songs by Black artists from the grime scene to get you out of your Drake phase and into a whole new world of rap.
The Darkest Timeline: Why are we so obsessed with the multiverse right now?
By Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer The multiverse. It’s understandably on everyone’s lips right now. When it seems like our own reality is becoming increasingly nightmarish, we want to check-in on an alternate self to see who has it worse. Simply put, the multiverse is everywhere thanks to our increasing desire for escape and comfort. That’s not to say The multiverse is a 2020-era invention. The idea of multiple parallel universes started circulating over 2,500 years ago in Ancient Greece.
Food for Thought: Menemen
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Are you desperately looking for new recipes that are easy to make and budget-friendly? Are you sick to your stomach of instant ramen 5–7 days a week? Would you like to add a hearty, healthy, and delicious meal to your repertoire? Then I want to introduce you to menemen, the Turkish breakfast dish which is just as perfect for lunch as it is for dinner.
Horoscopes: May 9 -May 15
By: Yasmin Vejs Simsek, Staff Writer Aries: You will find all the unique Vancouver events and hidden speakeasies and your friends will all wonder how you do it. You can’t help it! You’re always the first to discover where it’s at. You’re the life of the party. Maybe you should focus on being the life of your studies? Taurus: The summer for Taurus will be a horrible time . . .
