Detection of intercontinental reassortant H6 avian influenza viruses from wild birds in South Korea, 2015 and 2017
1. Introduction Wild waterfowl are the natural hosts of avian influenza viruses (AIVs) (1) Because of the geographical barrier, AIVs are separated into two phylogenetic lineages, the Eurasian and American lineages (2). However, some migratory waterfowl (e.g., the Northern Pintail duck; Anas acuta and Greater White-fronted goose; Anser albifrons) move intercontinentally, causing genetic mixing between the two lineages of AIVs (3–8).
