HK's Top 10 Heroes and Villains 2013

timeout.com.hk — Hong Kong isn't exactly blessed with many world class sportsmen, so when the 26-year-old Tso won three big fights this year, and defended his WBC Asia super flyweight title, we were filled with pride. There's now talk of the 11-time undefeated boxer signing to one of the world's biggest promoters, Top Rank. Stay tuned: next year, we may well have a boxing world champion in our midst. Read our interview with Rex Tso here . On a ceremonious day in June, HKAPA graduates decided to mark their receipt of their diplomas by showing their own type of respect to CY Leung, who was present on stage.

James Blunt

James Blunt

timeout.com.hk — James Blunt is a divisive figure - perhaps the epitome of the 'love him or hate him' cliché in pop. For those in the love corner, the former British forces man has the ability to address sentimental matters of the heart more directly, more poignantly, more weepingly than almost anyone else armed with a mere acoustic guitar and some strategically timed falsettos - mega-hits You're Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover being the finest examples. Those in the hate corner find his music insipid, psychologically damaging and just generally hard on the ears.

Hong Kong's Top 10... Coolest trees

Time Out Hong Kong — Silhouetted in this badass mother of trees in Kam Tin Shui Mei Village is the outline of what once was a Q'ing dynasty village study hall. After an inland migration order forced villagers to abandon their homes, the young banyan's branches grew unkempt and eventually surrounded the study hall. While the house itself has disappeared over time, its existence remains casted in this breathtaking tree house banyan. Like wild streetlights growing out of urban facades in much of the Central and Western District are Hong Kong's iconic stone wall trees, the largest of which are in Kennedy Town.

Johnny Hallyday

Johnny Hallyday

timeout.com.hk — Adulation and a shiny seat in the French Foreign Legion are how the French like to reward the man who introduced five decades of rock'n'roll to their nation. To the outside world, Johnny Hallyday has been described in a lot of ways - France's answer to Elvis Presley, a Gallic Ricky Nelson, an ageing crooner clad in leather - but perhaps the most telling description is: as the greatest rock musician you've never heard of. When he first debuted in the early 60s, Hallyday made waves by taking the style of British and American chart-toppers, adding French lyrics and releasing his own versions.

Hong Kong's Top 10: Pirates

Time Out — 1 Ching I Descendant of a long line of Fujianese sea-bandits, Ching I was the granddaddy of 19th century pirates. He created a central coalition of neighbouring pirate fleets that would be strong enough to withstand the Chinese navy. Ching became the most famous pirate in Chinese history and died in 1807, leaving behind wife Ching Shih, a former prostitute, and adopted son Cheung Po Tsai, who he kidnapped from a fisherman. (Ching Shih) 2 Ching Shih Ascending to power after her husband's death, Ching Shih or Ching I Sao (meaning Ching's widow) appointed Po Tsai as admiral and together they obliterated any Qing boat to cross their path.

Interview: Tom Rhodes

Interview: Tom Rhodes

timeout.com.hk — He's an American comedian who started stand-up routines at just 17 years old and was the first comic spokesman who signed with Comedy Central in the USA in the early 1990s. He's a TV host, travel writer, actor and one hilarious guy. In short, Tom Rhodes is an American travelling comedian and star whose international fame outweighs his popularity at home. And he's on his way to Hong Kong for a series of comedy shows across the city which should knock your socks off. Rhodes, who hails from Florida, says he prefers life on the road.

K-Pop Star Hunt

K-Pop Star Hunt

Time Out Hong Kong — For those unfamiliar with K-Pop Star Hunt, think American Idol on speed. With shiny, overproduced sets, bootcamp-like training (a la The Biggest Loser), judges with the wrath of 10 Simon Cowells, and enough strong-armed coercion to make Britney Spears spontaneously combust 30 times - you've got yourself K-Pop Star Hunt - a pre-competition qualifier which plucks Asian contestants outside of Korea and throws them face-first into intensive training, rigorous competition and morally ambiguous makeovers required of a true Korean pop star. Previous seasons showed contestants going to a hospital and having their age, fitness, health and appearance tested by doctors for some kind of optimum superstar physicality.

Driving across the US and Canada for four months straight is enough to make just about anyone carsick. Even a band like the Carsick Cars. And they're nowhere near stopping. Having just finished North America, the Beijing-based indie trio are back in Asia promoting their new album "3," starting in Hong Kong's Hidden Agenda with locally-loved HK band The Yours. Arriving in Hong Kong only a few hours before the show the band goes straight through their warm-ups and the rest of their time before the show being interviewed.
