What does Brevel do? Brevel develops illuminated fermentation technology that brings controlled light inside industrial bioreactors. This enables companies to grow and scale light-responsive cells, including microalgae and plant cells, in a fully controlled environment, from early development all the way to commercial production. The current landscape Fermentation is becoming an increasingly important manufacturing platform for food, nutraceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical ingredients.
Ayana Bio and Brevel have secured a $1.25 million grant from Israel’s BIRD Foundation to investigate whether illuminated fermentation technology can significantly improve plant cell culture production. The project brings together a US-based plant cell culture company and an Israeli food-tech startup specializing in light-assisted fermentation systems.
Meaningful Business (MB): Can you tell us a bit about the issues you are trying to solve and why you selected them Yonatan Golan (YG): The current alternative protein market has many problems when it comes to cost, flavour, functionality, quality and sustainability. Microalgae are the ultimate source of protein in terms of sustainability, but unfortunately the existing options for microalgae as an alternative protein are costly and encounter taste barriers.
The tracers we use are part of the human immunodeficiency virus envelope glycoprotein gp41, whose assembly at the PM is critical for viral budding31. Our construct consists of the transmembrane domain of gp41 with a mutation that inhibits its binding to cholesterol32 and thus, to cholesterol-enriched domains at the PM. The gp41 constructs are tagged with a fluorescent protein (PAGFP), which is specifically labelled with a primary antibody stained with the fluorescent dye Alexa Fluor 594 (AF594).
