This study's aim was to explore and describe the lives of older patients living alone with advanced cancer and undergoing outpatient cancer chemotherapy. They take pride in “not being a burden on others” and maintaining their independence, enduring severe symptoms and functional limitations as the cost of life-prolonging treatment. Despite sometimes facing despair, they manage their daily lives within the confines of their personal “vessel”—the extent of their physical and social activities.
