How nine hours changed my life
After nearly seven years of living in south Louisiana, I have enjoyed many experiences. I have visited the swamp, enjoyed some of Louisiana’s finest food, and even made some amazing friends. However, nothing would prepare for the life-changing event that took place over a year ago. Growing up with a parent who was an educator, I learned the value of school, and the impact teachers can have on students. What I was not prepared for was the impact I could have, as a non-educator.
Make the first step toward better health
It’s time to raise awareness about something that affects millions of Americans each year: Mental Illness. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and it’s a great opportunity to break the silence and stigma surrounding a health issue that is quite frankly, for most, uncomfortable to discuss. Mental health problems are very common: 1 in 5 U.S. adults, 20 percent of youth ages 13-18, and countless children are affected by mental illness.
This is how you can make a difference
A year ago, I was on a Sunday evening cruise around Lafayette with a friend. Being a passenger allowed me to take in my surroundings and notice things that I normally don’t when I’m driving. As we were riding down Ambassador Caffery between the Bertrand split and I-10, I saw the overgrown grass in the median, the torn up shoulder, and numerous potholes. I thought to myself, “they should really do something about this.” It was at that moment that I had an epiphany.
the705: A Look Back
In 2009, my wife and I moved to Lafayette and were just starting to figure out life. I started a new role as a commercial banker for Capital One Bank, which is committed to investing in good in the community and encourages its associates to volunteer time year-round to support a wide range of impactful organizations and programs. Not long after moving back, I attended Episcopal School of Acadiana's groundbreaking for its lower school campus, and recognized Sarah Berthelot in the crowd.
Google Trips: Why it matters to local biz
In my previous life as a barista, I got used to being a visitor’s walking, talking travel guide. It’s one of the few things that made the job interesting; the stories and conversations you get from people who have never been here before, and the chances you get to hear someone pronounce the word jambalaya, were really fun and heart-warming. But before we could begin our exchange, each of those visitors had to find their way to our doorstep. How do visitors find your coffee shop or bar?
Develop democracy as a habit
If we want to learn a language or pick up a craft, “practice makes perfect” is common advice. As Malcolm Gladwell and Anders Ericsson have recently argued, practice, more than talent, is the difference between success and failure. For instance, someone who wants to run a marathon need not be born a gifted athlete; rather, completion depends on developing the habit of regular practice.
Newcomers weigh in on Lafayette (food was a hit!)
Recruiting millennials to come live with and work with us here in Lafayette is the best part of my job at CGI. I share my passion for our city — both the wonderful qualities and the challenges. I love Lafayette and am proud of all the areas where we are improving. I was interested in what our company’s new members (i.e. employees) think of the city, so I sent them a survey. Twenty-eight CGI members new to the area responded. They moved here from as far as California and as near as Lake Charles.
Opinion: Support your local filmmakers
I won’t bore you with the turmoil of Louisiana’s film industry, nor will I waste your time complaining about politicians beings politicians and not fully understanding how the film industry works.
Marketing when economic times are tough
When the economy is doing well, reaching new clients, carving out market share and experimenting with new technologies are some of the most exciting prospects for business owners. It can seem like an obvious decision to invest in advertising when business is booming. But what happens when the economy takes a turn for the worst? It’s at this time that smart business owners and managers must make critical decisions to continue paying off dividends long after the market corrects itself.
