Boxfishes (Ostraciidae) comprise two major evolutionary lineages: the Lactophryinae, distributed in the Atlantic Ocean, and the Ostraciinae, occurring throughout the Indo-Pacific (Santini et al., 2013). Members of both groups are characterized by a rigid bony carapace composed of thick, fused hexagonal plates that provides effective protection against predators but severely restricts body flexibility (Tyler, 1963).
