Teaching Research Integrity through Verification of AI-Generated References: An Activity for Upper-Level Chemistry Courses
Integrating generative AI (GenAI) into chemistry coursework is transforming how students approach scientific writing and evaluate information. In this activity, implemented in upper-level biochemistry and bioinorganic chemistry courses, 69 undergraduate and graduate students used chatbots like ChatGPT, U-M GPT, and Claude to create bibliographies for essays on chemistry research topics.
Self-plagiarism: A retrospective study of its prevalence and patterns across scientific disciplines
ABSTRACT This study explores the incidence and nature of self-plagiarism across various disciplines. Using Retraction Watch data, we analyze retraction times, authorship patterns, disciplinary differences, and geographical origin of manuscripts retracted due to duplications of data, image, complete article or parts of text. We find that image and entire article duplications are primary causes of self-plagiarism-related retractions.
Is scientific fraud getting worse in chemistry papers?
A study of more than 1200 chemistry retractions over 20 years shows an increase in research fraud. But independent experts say the number of retractions doesn’t reflect the scale of the problem: many cases of scientific fraud go unnoticed amid the vast ‘firehose’ of papers published in the scientific literature, and some publishers simply ignore complaints. The lead author of the new study notes the number of retracted chemistry papers increased over 20 years from about 10 to about 100 a year.
Analysis of Retracted Manuscripts in Chemistry: Errors vs Misconduct
Retractions and corrections are tools that are imperative for correcting science and preserving its integrity. Fanelli’s study showed that while the number of corrections has remained relatively stable since 1901 the number of retractions has been increasing by 20% a year since 1980. (1) Fanelli explains this growth with the “stronger system” hypothesis, proclaiming that the scientific society has evolved to become more vigilant and proactive in identifying and reporting fraudulent research.
Publication practices during the COVID-19 pandemic: Biomedical preprints and peer-reviewed literature
New Results doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.01.21.427563 Abstract The coronavirus pandemic introduced many changes to our society, and deeply affected the established in biomedical sciences publication practices. In this article, we present a comprehensive study of the changes in scholarly publication landscape for biomedical sciences during the COVID-19 pandemic, with special emphasis on preprints posted on bioRxiv and medRxiv servers.
Solid-State Synthesis and Structure of the Enigmatic Ammonium Octaborate: (NH4)2[B7O9(OH)5]·3/4B(OH)3·5/4H2O
The compound known since the 19th century as ammonium octaborate was structurally characterized revealing the ammonium salt of the ribbon isomer of the heptaborate anion, [B O (OH) ]2–, with boric acid and water molecules. Of composition (NH ) B O ·4.88H O, it approximates the classical ammonium octaborate composition (NH ) B O ·6H O and has the structural formula {(NH ) [B O (OH) ]} ·3B(OH) ·5H O.
