Young Africans Invited to Shape the Face of AU's 2027 Theme
A logo may seem a small thing, but for the African Union it is the public face of a year meant to speak to every citizen on the continent. That is the thinking behind a new competition the African Union Commission has launched, inviting young Africans aged 18 to 24 to design the visual identity for the AU Theme of the Year 2027. The theme itself was adopted by the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
South African Tourism bets on food tourism at 2026 expo
South African Tourism’s food-first destination strategy faces its test against policy and market data when the agency joins the Gastronomy Africa Conference & Expo in uMhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, from Monday 19 October to Tuesday 20 October 2026. The two-day event, formerly the SA Chef Conference & Expo, has grown into a pan-African platform on the business of food. Its agenda covers culinary heritage, indigenous ingredients, responsible sourcing, skills development and gastronomy tourism.
A village mourns Sbu, a death twisted into a political story
In a rondavel in South Africa, a man named Sbu did what many people do on a cold night. He brought his imbawula, a coal brazier, inside for warmth. He had been drinking. He lay down beside it. Carbon monoxide gave him no warning: no colour, no smell, only drowsiness in a body already dulled by alcohol. By the time flames took the rondavel, he was beyond waking. In the morning, the village found him burnt like a log.
Film festival rolls out new model across two cities
The Reel to Reality Film Festival returns for its sixth year with a restructured delivery model, running across Johannesburg and Cape Town on 17, 18 and 25 October. Founder Mbali Mashaba has stripped back the programme to three focused offerings, the Retrospective, the Script Studio and Q&As, and the screenings will run across two venues: Artistry in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, and the Homecoming Centre in Cape Town.
Eric Simons set to join Fleming's Test staff as bowling coach
England’s Test coaching operation is moving from planning to delivery. Eric Simons is set to join Stephen Fleming’s backroom team as Test bowling coach, with the formal announcement expected on Monday, the same day England reveal their latest round of central contracts. Within days, the staffing of the Test set-up will be in place. Simons, a South African and a long-time ally of Fleming, brings an operational record spanning head-coaching and specialist bowling roles.
Africa's 58 000 GW wind gap in focus at Windaba
Africa holds an estimated 58 000 GW of onshore wind potential, yet less than 0.02% of that capacity has been installed to date. That gap between resource and revenue was the central commercial question at the 15th annual Windaba Exhibition and Conference, held on 6 and 7 October 2026 at the CTICC and hosted by the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA).
764 Case Puts Costs and Stakes on SA Courts' Docket
The Malmesbury Magistrates Court has declared a 16-year-old fit to stand trial on accusations of links to the global online child exploitation network known as “764”, one of three high-stakes matters before South Africa’s courts this week that carry significant institutional and financial weight for the state bodies involved. According to EWN, the teenager appeared in court after completing a 30-day psychiatric observation period at Valkenberg Hospital.
South Africa's sewage plants fail Green Drop test at scale
Nearly half of South Africa’s municipal wastewater treatment systems are in a critical state of performance, according to the department of water and sanitation’s latest Green Drop assessment, and the machinery meant to turn that around is showing the strain. Of the 848 municipal wastewater systems assessed during the 2023/24 financial year, 396 were classified as critical, up from 334, or 39%, in the 2022 report. The proportion performing at good or excellent levels fell from 14% to 8%.
Coming home to hardship: Zimbabweans face slim support
For tens of thousands of Zimbabwean families, the question is no longer whether they can survive abroad, but whether they can survive coming home. Citizens who fled South Africa amid anti-immigrant pressure have discovered that safety at home comes with a heavy economic price, and the support systems waiting for them are thin. Samantha Chimbuya, 30, is one of them. She left Zimbabwe in 2019 in search of better opportunities and, for a time, found them.
