During the week of March 29, 2004, the El Paso Times ran a series titled "Great Streets." The series examined the five major thoroughfares in the city, Dyer Street, Alameda Avenue, Mesa Street, Lee Treviño Drive and Montana Avenue. The El Paso Times is featuring major El Paso streets that have been long-standing thoroughfares in the region. The streets, like our city, have seen many changes and have contributed to El Paso's history.

DPS wants Colorado to make training to teach English learners mandatory

Three kindergartners waited gleefully as Heather Christman showed them a clear plastic bag filled with miniature cars and blocks. The children, all English-language learners, had just finished reading the book “My Car.” They would use the blocks and the cars to give examples of words they learned: faster, slower, ramp, bridge, over and under. Christman teaches at Denver’s Goldrick Elementary School, where about 70 percent of the students are learning English.

2 confirmed dead in Black Forest fire; 379 homes destroyed

BLACK FOREST — On a day when firefighters could finally match the might of the devastating Black Forest fire, they also made the grimmest discovery yet in its ashes. A somber El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said at a news conference late Thursday afternoon that firefighters found the bodies of two people in the fire's rubble. The bodies were discovered in what was the garage of a home that the blaze leveled. They were next to a car with its doors open.
