A different kind of freedom and secularism
The human condition Koi dam ka mehman hoon ai ahle mehfil, Chiragh-e-seher hoon, bujha chahta hoon “I am a guest only for a few moments, my companions/ I am the lamp that burns before dawn and longs to be extinguished” This couplet by Iqbal ended the last letter Bhagat Singh wrote to his younger brother Kurtar Singh from the death cell. The letter was in Urdu, adorned with quite a few couplets.
Imagine a boot
Mr Vawda essentially made two points as he displayed boot fetishism. Like any fetishist, he loves the mysterious powers the object of his adulation represents to him and he finds it extremely unreasonable and hypocritical on the part of the opposition to try and invade his inner sanctum. It appears he guards it quite jealously. When the host of the show wondered, quite elegantly, about how shiny the boot was, Mr Vawda’s comments implied that the opposition had licked the boot wonderfully well.
News Analysis: Devil's advocate or lethal weapon?
Chaudhry Nisar has suddenly come to represent, for himself and for some media commentators, all that is good but becoming extinct in our politics. He has shown character; he has acted like a true political worker; he has exposed the fact that the PM is surrounded by sycophants and at the same time dashed the hopes of those who wanted him to change his loyalties and betray the PML-N.
Freedom vs freedom | Opinion | thenews.com.pk
Reproduced below are parts of two much longer articles published in May 2014. The articles were of a series written in the context of the shooting of Hamid Mir in the same year and what happened subsequently. The main thrust of the arguments retains its relevance even today. Both in misery and maturity Pakistan may have progressed too far for patriotism on payroll to be anything more than prime-time entertainment.
Umberto Eco, Brother William and a thief
‘Everywhere I have sought peace and not found it, except in a corner with a book’ Book thieves are cruel bastards. I wasn’t done reeling at the disappearance from my library of a rare edition of Russell’s ‘History of Western Philosophy’ when now, upon going back to my Umberto Eco collection, I find three of the books gone. Damn you to hell, Thief. This I discover only a day after I lost more than a thousand e-books to the incompetence of the men fixing my computer.
Who - and what - was Bhutto?
The human condition He was a crook and an impostor. He was a visionary and a revolutionary. He was a fascist. He was a social democrat. He was nothing but a Sindhi wadera. He was a murderer. He is a martyr. He was too many things to too many men. Whatever he was, he was a bit too much for the military, the bureaucracy and a large section of the urban middle class. He had to be gotten rid of. He was gotten rid of.
Bhagat Singh: for the deaf to hear
Part - I More than eight decades after he proudly walked to the gallows in the Lahore Central Jail on March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh caused a fierce controversy when a move was made by certain civil society organisations and some ‘liberal’ segments – as they were called by their opponents – to have Lahore’s Shadman Chowk named after the revolutionary.
